Hello Friends, a glorious summer (a.k.a. climate change) in Europe is slowly winding down. For me, that means it's high time to clean up and restock our camper for the fall season, and process a myriad of travel impressions caught on camera into lasting memories.
So today I'd like to tell you a little about a short trip to France we undertook last month. It was more of a relaxing seaside vacation this time around, but we still saw a lot of stuff, since we have to cross all of France east to west to get anywhere near the Atlantic ocean.
Hallo Freunde, ein wunderschöner Sommer (gemeinhin als Klimawandel verrufen) in Europa geht langsam zu Ende. Für mich bedeutet das, dass es höchste Zeit ist, unseren Camper für die Herbstsaison flott zu machen und einen Haufen Reiseeindrücke, die ich mit der Kamera eingefangen habe, zu dauerhaften Erinnerungen zu verarbeiten.
Heute möchte ich also ein wenig über eine kurze Reise nach Frankreich berichten, die wir vergangenen Monat unternommen haben. Diesmal war es eher ein entspannter Urlaub am Meer, aber wir haben trotzdem viel gesehen, da wir ganz Frankreich von Osten nach Westen durchqueren müssen, um in die Nähe des Atlantik zu kommen.

Being the greedy pig that I am, I always try to plan a stop in the Auvergne. The down-to-earth, peasant cuisine there is simply delicious, period! If you've never enjoyed a Truffade (potato gratin with Cantal raw milk cheese) or Crêpes au Jambon d'Aurillac (pancakes filled with ham), you should put the Auvergne on your bucket list A.S.A.P.! There are countless great restaurants in Clermont-Ferrand that would be worth a vacation of their own.
And just a few minutes drive west of Clermont-Ferrand rises the volcanic cone of the Puy de Dôme (1,465 m / 4,806 ft). The Puy-de-Dôme is the highest mountain of the Chaîne des Puys, a chain of about a hundred extinct volcanoes.

If you like you can climb the Puy-de-Dôme on foot, either by walking along a service road (easy) or perusing a hiking trail which is a good deal shorter, but also a more strenuous exercise. For the less masochistic among us, the government of the Département Puy-de-Dôme in its wisdom has seen fit to build a modern cog railroad to the summit, which makes this mountain fully handicap-accessible.
14.00 EUR buys you a round-trip ticket for a comfortable half-hour-ride up the mountain, including all the views your eyes can handle - provided you seat yourself on the left side of the train for the way up or the right side for the trip down. The train is called "Panoramique des Dômes" and the ground station is located in 63870 Orcines, about 15 clicks west of Clermont-Ferrand.
Uralte Vulkane im Massif Central
Verfressen wie ich nunmal bin, lege ich immer wieder gerne einen Stop in der Auvergne ein. Die bodenständige, bäuerliche Küche dort ist einfach saulecker, Punkt! Wer noch nie eine Truffade (Kartoffelgratin mit Cantal-Rohmilchkäse) oder Crêpes au Jambon d'Aurillac (Pfannkuchen mit Schinkenfüllung) genossen hat, sollte die Auvergne schnellstens auf seine Bucket List setzen! In Clermont-Ferrand gibt es unzählige gute Restaurants die einen eigenen Urlaub wert wären.
Und nur ein paar Autominuten westlich von Clermont-Ferrand liegt der Vulkankegel des Puy de Dôme (1.465 m). Der Puy-de-Dôme ist der der höchste Berg der Chaîne des Puys, einer Kette von etwa hundert erloschenen Vulkanen.
Wer mag, kann den Puy-de-Dôme zu Fuß erklimmen, entweder über eine Service-Straße (leicht) oder entlang eines Wanderweges, der zwar viel kürzer, aber auch deutlich anstrengender ist. Für die weniger masochistisch Veranlagten unter uns hat die Regierung des Départements Puy-de-Dôme in ihrer Weisheit eine moderne Zahnradbahn zum Gipfel gebaut, die diesen Berg damit vollständig behindertengerecht macht.
Für 14,00 EUR pro Nase bekommt ihr ein Hin- und Rückfahrtticket für eine bequeme halbstündige Fahrt auf den Berg, bei der ihr soviel Aussichten genießen könnt, wie eure Augen aushalten können - vorausgesetzt, ihr nehmt bei der Bergfahrt auf der linken Seite des Zuges Platz, oder eben auf der rechten Seite für die Talfahrt. Die Bahn heißt "Panoramique des Dômes" und die Talstation befindet sich in 63870 Orcines, etwa 15km westlich von Clermont-Ferrand.
Even in ancient times, people were fascinated by this impressive peak and built places of pilgrimage on the Puy-de-Dôme. A Celtic sanctuary was followed by a Roman temple in honor of Saturn, whose ruins are currently being excavated and restored.
In 1648 the mountain entered the annals of science: Physicist Blaise Pascal proved that atmospheric pressure is based on the weight of air above its respective location by using a mercury barometer to measure the pressure difference between Clermont-Ferrand and the summit of the Puy-de-Dôme, allowing him to approximate the specific gravity of air.
Schon in der Antike waren die Menschen von diesem beeindruckenden Gipfel fasziniert und errichteten Wallfahrtsstätten auf dem Puy-de-Dôme. Ein keltisches Heiligtum wurde gefolgt von einem römischen Tempel zu Ehren Saturns, dessen Ruinen derzeit ausgegraben und restauriert werden.
In die Annalen der Wissenschaft ging der Berg 1648 ein: Der Physiker Blaise Pascal wies nach, dass der Luftdruck auf dem Gewicht der Luft über ihrem jeweiligen Standort beruht, indem er mit einem Quecksilberbarometer den Druckunterschied zwischen Clermont-Ferrand und dem Gipfel des Puy-de-Dôme maß und so annähernd das spezifische Gewicht berechnen konnte.
The Village Where Time Stood Still: Collonges-la-Rouge
My favorite village in all of France is found in the Limousin and built almost entirely of red sandstone. The architecture of the houses in Collonges-la-Rouge faithfully demonstrates French rural architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. Collonges-la-Rouge is located in the département Corrèze, about 20 km (12 1/2 mi) southeast of Brive-la-Gaillarde, about midway between Clermont-Ferrand and Bordeaux.
Wo die Zeit stehen geblieben ist: Collonges-la-Rouge
Mein Lieblingsdorf in ganz Frankreich liegt im Limousin und ist fast vollständig aus rotem Sandstein gebaut. Die Architektur der Häuser in Collonges-la-Rouge ist ein getreues Abbild der französischen ländlichen Architektur des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Collonges-la-Rouge liegt im Departement Corrèze, ca. 20 km südöstlich von Brive-la-Gaillarde, etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Clermont-Ferrand und Bordeaux.
Collonges started originally around a priory in the 8th century A.D. with fortified walls giving protection to an industrious townsfolk. There was a good living to be made, as Collonges was a station on the Way of St. James and profited from the pilgrims headed for Rocamadour just some kilometers south of here.
Getting through its checkered history relatively unscathed, the village still ended up as a stone quarry, until some villagers lobbied for listed historical monument status at the beginning of the 20th century, which was granted in 1942.
Collonges entstand im 8. Jahrhundert n. Chr. aus einem Priorat mit befestigten Mauern, die den fleißigen Einwohnern Schutz boten. Man konnte gut dort leben, denn Collonges war eine Station auf dem Jakobsweg und profitierte von den Pilgern auf dem Weg nach Rocamadour, das einige Kilometer südlich von hier liegt.
Das Dorf überstand seine wechselvolle Geschichte relativ unbeschadet und endete dennoch am Ende als Steinbruch, bis sich einige Dorfbewohner Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts dafür einsetzten, dass es unter Denkmalschutz gestellt wurde, was 1942 auch gelang.
Today, Collonges-la-Rouge is a member of the association "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). Actually, the association was created here, and successfully so. I have been coming back to Collonges a few times through the years and it seems like there are more tourists every time. Still, there is something magical about the place, and apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Heute ist Collonges-la-Rouge Mitglied der Vereinigung "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (Die schönsten Dörfer Frankreichs). Eigentlich wurde der Verein hier gegründet, und das mit Erfolg. Ich bin im Laufe der Jahre einige Male nach Collonges zurückgekehrt, und es scheint, dass es jedes Mal mehr Touristen gibt. Trotzdem hat dieser Ort etwas Magisches an sich, und anscheinend bin ich nicht der Einzige, der so denkt.
It is still great fun to explore the place and sample a variety of little stores, often run by artisans who craft their wares on the spot. The highlight for Caroline and me was the studio of René Boutang who is the resident painter in Collonges-la-Rouge. If you like art, check out his website!

Es macht dennoch großen Spaß, den Ort zu erkunden und die vielen kleinen Läden zu durchstöbern, die häufig von Kunsthandwerkern betrieben werden, die ihre Waren gleich vor Ort herstellen. Crossing the Salt Marshes of the Seudre Estuary by Steam Train
Headed roughly in the general direction of the big French islands in the Bay of Biscay, Oléron and Ré, we came through Saujon, a small town in the département Charente-Maritime, about 10 clicks inland from the Atlantic coast. Saujon's claim to fame is Le Train des Mouettes, a neat museum train whose traction is provided by the oldest working steam locomotive in France, a machine dating back to 1891! Tourists can take a trip back in time, along the Seudre estuary on a railroad line opened in 1876 and dedicated to the transport of oysters in times past.
The beautiful 030T locomotive of the Train des Mouettes was manufactured by the Schneider company in Le Creusot in 1891. Part of a series of 4 identical locomotives, it bears the number 3. The 030T ran for over 60 years in regular service before being bought by a train lover who put the machine in protected storage. In 2004 the Schneider was acquired by Le Train des Mouettes and has been pulling tourists through the salt marshes of the Seudre estuary ever since. They don't make 'em like that anymore...
Mit der Dampfeisenbahn durch die Salzwiesen der Seudre-Mündung
Da wir ungefähr in Richtung der großen französischen Inseln im Golf von Biskaya, Oléron und Ré, fuhren, kamen wir auch durch Saujon, eine kleine Stadt etwa 10 Kilometer landeinwärts von der Atlantikküste. Saujon im Département Charente-Maritime ist bekannt für Le Train des Mouettes, einen hübschen Museumszug, der von der ältesten noch funktionierenden Dampflokomotive Frankreichs aus dem Jahr 1891 gezogen wird! Auf der 1876 eröffneten Bahnstrecke entlang der Seudre-Mündung, die früher für den Transport von Austern genutzt wurde, können Touristen eine Reise in die Vergangenheit unternehmen.
Die schöne Lokomotive 030T des Train des Mouettes wurde 1891 von der Firma Schneider in Le Creusot hergestellt. Sie gehört zu einer Serie von 4 identischen Lokomotiven und trägt die Nummer 3. Die 030T war über 60 Jahre lang im regulären Betrieb, bevor sie von einem Eisenbahnliebhaber gekauft wurde, der die Maschine in ein geschütztes Depot stellte. Im Jahr 2004 wurde die Schneider von Le Train des Mouettes erworben und zieht seither Touristen durch die Salzwiesen der Seudre-Mündung. So etwas wird heute nicht mehr hergestellt...
The transportation on Le Train des Mouettes is admittedly very authentic, i.e. a little rustic, with wooden benches, zero car suspensision, and track that felt like it had potholes every few meters. Only one passenger didn't much care about that; he was mostly happy to be along for the ride and he also knew, that he could always seek out mommy's lap if it would get too rough. :-)
Die Beförderung im Train des Mouettes ist zugegebenermaßen sehr authentisch, d.h. ein wenig rustikal, mit Holzbänken, null Federung und einer Strecke, die gefühlt alle paar Meter Schlaglöcher hat. Nur einem Fahrgast war das ziemlich egal; er war vor allem froh, mit von der Partie zu sein, und er wusste auch, dass er jederzeit Frauchens Schoß aufsuchen konnte, wenn es zu ruckelig wurde. :-)
For those with CO2 and NOX phobias it's probably best not to partake in antique railroading adventures. For the rest of us it's "All aboard!" and "Full steam ahead!" We're having fun now, enjoying the dirty hands-on technology of yesteryear, secure in the knowledge that the planet will survive and keep on turning, one day at a time.
Für Menschen mit CO2 - und Stickoxid-Phobien ist es wahrscheinlich das Beste, nicht an Abenteuern mit antiken Eisenbahnen teilzunehmen. Für den Rest von uns heißt es "Alles einsteigen!" und "Volldampf voraus!". Das macht Spaß, und wir genießen die dreckige Technologie zum Anfassen von anno dunnemals - gefestigt im Wissen, dass der Planet überleben und sich weiter drehen wird, jeden Tag ein Stückchen.
In addition to their steam engines, Le Train des Mouettes also owns some diesel traction which is used to pull an array of fancy passenger cars decked out as restaurant wagons. Supposedly, those can be booked for special culinary excursions in the evening. Steam locos can't run past 5:00 P.M. as their fire boxes need to cool down and the machines have to be serviced before being stored in the depot for the night.
Neben den Dampflokomotiven verfügt Le Train des Mouettes auch über Dieseltraktion, die zum Ziehen einer Reihe luxoriöser, als Restaurantwagen gestalteter Personenwagons verwendet wird. Vermutlich können diese für spezielle kulinarische Ausflüge am Abend gebucht werden. Dampflokomotiven können nicht länger als bis 17.00 Uhr fahren, da ihre Feuerung abkühlen muss und die Maschinen gewartet werden, bevor sie für die Nacht im Depot abgestellt werden.
Along the route, we saw a lot of rolling stock that is probably waiting for its restoration, i.e. until the museum association has collected enough money once again, or the government doles out some grant for the work. As a self-confessed railfan, I think it's nice that these historic vehicles are not simply scrapped.
Entlang der Strecke sahen wir eine Menge rollendes Material, das wohl auf seine Restauration wartet, d.h. bis der Museumsverein wieder genug Geld eingenommen hat, oder die Regierung etwas locker macht. Als bekennender Eisenbahnfan finde ich es schön, dass diese geschichtsträchtigen Vehikel nicht einfach verschrottet werden.

In the Vicinity of La Tremblade
The following day we simply bummed around the seaside with minimal sightseing and a lot of relaxing. We had a quick look at the Phare de La Coubre, the tallest lighthouse in the Charente-Maritime, but didn't bother to fight the crowd in order to climb the 300+ steps to the top.

Am nächsten Tag trieben wir uns einfach an der Küste herum, mit wenig Sightseeing und viel Entspannung. Wir warfen einen kurzen Blick auf den Phare de La Coubre, den höchsten Leuchtturm der Charente-Maritime, machten uns aber nicht die Mühe, gegen die Menschenmenge anzukämpfen, um die über 300 Stufen nach oben zu steigen.
To get a little swimming in, we selected the Plage de la Cèpe, for two reasons: firstly, this lesser known beach is very quiet, with no crowds. Chance of encoutering a Karen to point out the "no dogs" policy close to zero. Secondly, we could park our camper practically right at the beach in the shade, so our after-swim-shower and cold drinks were waiting for us right there. Not having to schlepp the beach gear hundreds of meters was also a plus. Please note: large motor homes will not fit in the parking at La Cèpe.
Für unser Badevergnügen wählten wir den Plage de la Cèpe, und zwar aus zwei Gründen: Erstens ist dieser weniger bekannte Strand sehr ruhig und nicht überlaufen. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, auf jemanden zu treffen, der uns auf das Hundeverbot hinweist, geht gegen Null. Zweitens konnten wir unseren Camper praktisch direkt am Strand im Schatten parken, so dass unsere Dusche nach dem Schwimmen und die kalten Getränke gleich dort auf uns warteten. Dass wir die Strandausrüstung nicht Hunderte von Metern schleppen mussten, war ebenfalls ein Vorteil. Bitte beachtet: Große Wohnmobile passen nicht auf den Parkplatz von La Cèpe.

On the Île d'Oléron
With a length of 34 km (21 mi) the Île d'Oléron is France's largest island in the Atlantic ocean (the second largest island counting Corsica in the Mediterranean) and is accessible from the mainland by car via a convenient bridge of 2.8 km (1 3/4 mi). The sea floor between Oléron and the mainland is very shallow while enjoying a continuous inflow of fresh water. This is ideal for oysters, and thus Île d'Oleron is one of the most important European spots for oyster farming.

Die Île d'Oléron ist mit einer Länge von 34 km die größte Insel Frankreichs im Atlantik (die zweitgrößte nach Korsika im Mittelmeer) und mit dem Auto über eine 2,8 km lange Brücke vom Festland aus erreichbar. Der Meeresboden zwischen Oléron und dem Festland ist sehr seicht und verschlickt, und wird ständig mit Süßwasser gespeist. Das ist ideal für Austern und macht die Île d'Oleron zu einem der wichtigsten europäischen Standorte für die Austernzucht.

There is a lot to see and do on this island, but for today we chose to concentrate on the village of Château d'Oléron, named after the ancient castle of the Dukes of Aquitaine, which was replaced by a Vauban citadel in 1630.
Es gibt viel zu sehen und zu unternehmen auf dieser Insel, aber diesmal haben wir uns auf das Dorf Château d'Oléron konzentriert, das nach der alten Burg der Herzöge von Aquitanien benannt ist, die 1630 durch eine Vauban-Zitadelle ersetzt wurde.
In Château d'Oléron they have completely renovated a huge number of old oyster huts, adorned them with colorful paint jobs, and settled craftsmen and artists in them. Jewelry, paintings, sculptures, clothes... The list can go on and on. It's fun to stroll through the village, and browse the stores. Of course, there are also pubs and restaurants, so you can spend a leisurely afternoon or evening here.
In Château d'Oléron hat man nämlich eine Unzahl von alten Austern-Hütten komplett durchrenoviert, hübsch bunt angestrichen, und Handwerker und Künstler darin angesiedelt. Schmuck, Gemälde, Skulpturen, Klamotten... Die Liste läßt sich beliebig lang fortsetzen. Es macht Spaß, durch das Dorf zu schlendern, und in den Läden rumzustöbern. Natürlich gibt es auch Kneipen und Restaurants, man kann also einen gemütlichen Nachmittag oder Abend hier verbringen.
Bourcefranc-le-Chapus
Before leaving Oléron, I threw the drone in the air, to take a peak at the "new" bridge (built in 1966), the ruins of the old bridge, and Fort Louvois just outside the port of Bourcefranc-le-Chapus. Fort Louvois is yet another one auf Vauban's fortifications, which can be found en masse all over France. This one was designed to deny enemy ships passage through the Pertuis de Maumusson, which is the sea between the Île d'Oléron and the mainland; in concert with the aforementioned Château d'Oléron.
Bourcefranc-le-Chapus
Bevor wir Oléron verließen, ließ ich meine Drohne aufsteigen, um einen Blick auf die "neue" Brücke (erbaut 1966), die Ruinen der alten Brücke und das Fort Louvois direkt vor dem Hafen von Bourcefranc-le-Chapus zu werfen. Fort Louvois ist eine weitere von Vaubans Festungsanlagen, die in ganz Frankreich haufenweise zu finden sind. Dieses Fort, in Verbindung mit dem Château d'Oléron, sollte feindlichen Schiffen die Durchfahrt durch die Pertuis de Maumusson, wie das Meer zwischen der Île d'Oléron und dem Festland genannt wird, verwehren.
We then proceeded to spend a wonderfully relaxing evening in Bourcefranc's designated parking area for recreational vehicles, which is located right at the beach. Too bad it was low tide, or it would have been perfect!
For those who don't know: many French communities provide areas ("aires") where people with RVs can legally park overnight, often free, sometimes for a nominal small fee. The communities do this to discourage wild camping and to keep an eye on things.
There may be fresh water, showers, toilets, disposal facilities, or not. This one had no fee and no amenities, but a phantastic location. In any event, if you outfit your camper to be self-sufficient, those French aires are a great way to escape the claustrophobia of campgrounds legally and save some money in the process.
To find those aires, search Google Maps for "camping car parking" plus the name of a nearby town, or use an app like Park4Night or IOverlander.

Anschließend verbrachten wir einen herrlich entspannten Abend auf dem für Wohnmobile vorgesehenen Parkplatz von Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, der direkt am Strand liegt. Schade, dass gerade Ebbe war, sonst wäre es perfekt gewesen!
Für diejenigen, die es nicht wissen: In vielen französischen Gemeinden gibt es Bereiche ("Aires"), in denen Wohnmobile legal über Nacht parken können, oft kostenlos, manchmal gegen eine geringe Gebühr. Die Gemeinden tun dies, um wildes Campen im Ansatz zu vermeiden und um die Dinge im Auge zu behalten.
Es kann Wasser, Duschen, Toiletten und Entsorgungseinrichtungen geben, oder eben nicht. Hier gab es keine Gebühr und keine Annehmlichkeiten, aber eine fantastische Location. Wenn euer Wohnmobil autark ausgestattet ist, sind diese französischen Aires auf jeden Fall eine gute Möglichkeit, der Klaustrophobie von Campingplätzen auf legale Weise zu entkommen und dabei auch noch Geld zu sparen.
Um solche Plätze zu finden, sucht in Google Maps nach "Camping Car Parking" plus Namen einer nahe gelegenen Ortschaft, oder verwendet eine App wie z.B. Park4Night oder IOverlander.
Picnic at the Pointe d'Yves
Between the Charente estuary and La Rochelle, directly opposite the Île d'Aix, lies the Pointe d'Yves. It's a very quiet stretch of coastline, but still easy to get to by camper from the hamlet of Yves. It was low tide when we arrived, and we decided to have a little picnic here, and watch the tide roll in.
The Pointe d'Yves is also a wonderful place to view a quintessentially French maritime feature: The "carrelets" are little booths on stilts from which one can fish in the sea quite comfortably - no boat necessary, and one's feet stay dry.

Zwischen der Charente-Mündung und La Rochelle, direkt gegenüber der Île d'Aix, liegt der Pointe d'Yves. Es ist ein ganz ruhiges Stückchen Küste, aber dennoch leicht vom Weiler Yves aus mit dem Camper anzufahren. Es war Ebbe als wir ankamen, und wir beschlossen, hier ein kleines Picknick zu veranstalten und das Einlaufen der Flut zu beobachten.
Am Pointe d'Yves kann man auch wunderbar eine ur-französische maritime Eigenart betrachten: Die Carrelets sind kleine Büdchen auf Pfählen, von denen aus man ganz bequem im Meer fischen kann - kein Boot notwendig und die Füße bleiben trocken.
On the Île de Ré
The Île the Ré is the second-largest of France's islands in the Atlantic ocean and situated about 2 clicks due west of La Rochelle. Just like Oléron, the Île de Ré is accessible by car via a toll bridge. (The toll is about 20.00 EUR.) At its highest point the bridge affords a nice view over the island and the sea; it is raised to allow French navy ships entry in the port of La Pallice.
The Île de Ré is a perfect spot for a family seaside vacation; with 2,800 hours of sunshine annualy, a steady mild breeze, nice beaches with waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, and lots of things to see and do. Although it is easy enough to get around by car, many vacationers prefer to ride bicycles which can be rented on every corner. The island is flat, and there are over 100 km (60+ mi) of dedicated bicycle paths.

Die Île de Ré ist die zweitgrößte der französischen Atlantik-Inseln und liegt etwa 2 km westlich von La Rochelle. Wie Oléron ist auch die Île de Ré mit dem Auto über eine mautpflichtige Brücke erreichbar. (Die Maut beträgt etwa 20,00 EUR.) An ihrem höchsten Punkt bietet die Brücke einen schönen Blick über die Insel und das Meer; sie ist hoch gebaut, damit die Schiffe der französischen Marine in den Hafen von La Pallice einlaufen können.
Die Île de Ré ist der perfekte Ort für einen Familienurlaub am Meer: 2.800 Sonnenstunden im Jahr, eine stetige milde Brise, schöne Strände mit vom Golfstrom erwärmtem Wasser und jede Menge Sehenswürdigkeiten und Aktivitäten. Obwohl es einfach genug ist, sich mit dem Auto fortzubewegen, ziehen es viele Urlauber vor, mit Fahrrädern zu fahren, die praktisch an jeder Ecke gemietet werden können. Die Insel ist flach, und es gibt über 100 km ausgewiesene Radwege.
As it was late in the day when we got here, we found ourselves a quiet camp spot on a field near the Abbaye des Châteliers east of La Flotte. The place serves as a visitor parking lot for the abbey, it's nice and level, and deserted at night. There is no sign prohibiting overnight parking, but campers should be aware that the authorities on Île de Ré are cracking down on wild campers at times.
Our vehicle is small and stealthy; it looks like a delivery van, and it's officially registered as one. We also never leave gear outside overnight. In essence, we're not camping, but merely sleeping in our legally parked truck, and I will argue that point in any court of law if it ever comes to that. Your mileage may vary, though.
Da es schon ziemlich spät war, als wir hier ankamen, fanden wir einen ruhigen Stellplatz auf einem Feld in der Nähe der Abbaye des Châteliers östlich von La Flotte. Der Platz dient als Besucherparkplatz für die Abteiruine, er ist schön eben und nachts praktisch menschenleer. Es gibt kein Schild, das das Parken über Nacht verbietet, aber Camper sollten sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass die Behörden auf der Île de Ré zuweilen hart gegen Wildcamper vorgehen.
Unser Fahrzeug ist klein und unauffällig; es sieht aus wie ein Lieferwagen und ist auch offiziell als Lkw zugelassen. Außerdem lassen wir unsere Ausrüstung nie über Nacht draußen rumstehen. Im Grunde genommen campen wir nicht, sondern schlafen lediglich in unserem legal geparkten Lkw, und ich werde das vor jedem Gericht so vorbringen, falls es jemals dazu kommen sollte. Bei eurem WoMo ist die Situation vielleicht eine andere, also erstmal drüber nachdenken.
The Abbaye des Châteliers
The Abbaye des Châteliers, or more precisely, the Abbey of Nôtre-Dame-de-Ré, is the ruin of a former Cistercian monastery in the eastern part of Île de Ré, east of La Flotte.
The abbey was founded around 1150 and gradually also became the political center of most of the island. The monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history; the current ruins date back to the 14th century.

Already in 1793 the monastery, which had become smaller and smaller with each subsequent destruction, was dissolved and abandoned to complete decay. However, the ruins of the church served as a navigation landmark for ships for a long time; it was even painted black and white at times for better visibility.
Bereits 1793 wurde das Kloster, das nach jeder Zerstörung immer kleiner geworden war, aufgelöst und dem völligen Verfall preisgegeben. Allerdings diente die Ruine der Kirche der Schifffahrt lange Zeit als Landmarke; sie war sogar zeitweise der besseren Sichtbarkeit wegen schwarz und weiß angestrichen.
I would like to point out one more time, we came here strictly to camp and relax in beautiful surroundings, and not to run a sightseeing operation for social media clicks or Hive rewards. So the balance of my photos doesn't really do this wonderful island justice, not in quantity, and not in quality! There is so much more to see and do, if you're so inclined.
Ich möchte noch einmal betonen, dass wir hierher gekommen waren, um in einer wunderschönen Umgebung zu campen und zu entspannen, und nicht, um eine Sightseeing-Aktion für Social-Media-Klicks oder Hive-Rewards durchzuziehen. I see that you got yourself a dog backpack of sorts. Nice one. They are a game changer for travel. Helps you bring the dog to places that you couldn't otherwise bring them. Cute photos. It looks super happy 😄.
Yeah, he inherited the backpack from his brother he never knew. (Whom we lost in February.) He likes it.
As to the separate parts, I'm doing the video for me, and then the privatized Hive version is a byproduct of that. By then, the story is complete anyway, so I put it out there. More a way of more durably remembering the stuff for myself than sharing, really.

Danke dir. Die ganze Insel hat nette Käffer, wo man es echt gut aushalten kann. Ich habe nur nicht soviel fotografiert, weil es manchmal schon störend ist und das Gefühl des Moments ruiniert. Der Downvote hat wohl nichts mit mir zu tun, sondern der Bursche hat scheinbar eine Privatfehde mit ranchorelaxo oder sowas. Innocent bystander ;-)
I didn't know that I was going into a tour of France when I clicked on this post! It is amazing. So much details in the descriptions and the photos make me feel like in there getting some European air and sun. I love the fact that the van is registered as a delivery vehicle 😂
Also my favorite photos are the ones of the sunset. However, I must say I'm a sucker for old buildings. Even the ones in ruins make me feel like a little boy watching something for the first time. It must be awesome to travel around you own vehicle and see all those nice places. It's been years since I took a road trip anywhere. Certainly miss it but these posts help me travel around the world.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I got into camping when the COVID restrictions hit and our politicians wanted to lock us up. I bought a small delivery van and converted it into a fully self-sustained camper for two. As to the tour the France, we live in Saarbrücken/Germany on the eastern Border of France and have to cross pretty much the entire country by necessity to hit the Atlantic in the west or the Mediterranean in the south. :-)

Danke Wolfram. Mach' Dir doch keinen Kopf. Ich tauche im Sommer auch aus Hive weg. Besseres zu tun als am Computer zu sitzen. Dafür hat uns der liebe Gott dieses Jahr einen besonders kalten Winter in Verbindung mit einer brunzdummen Regierung geschenkt - viele richtig kalte Tage kommen ja bald. Ob es allerdings Strom für den Rechner geben wird, ist noch nicht raus.
So komisch es auch, nach all dem Schlamassel durch die ich im Arbeitsleben waten musste, klingen mag: Ich habe erstmals echte Probleme meine Gedanken mit einer widerstandsfähigen Meinungsbildung anzufreunden. Beginnend mit der Idiotie Nord Stream 2 in die Sanktionen einzubeziehen bis hin zur militärischen Aufrüstung, die dem Wahnsinn Barrierefreiheit gewährt.
Ich habe Abstand davon genommen, das Um-mich-herum gänzlich zu verstehen.
Man kann es nicht mehr verstehen. Es muss schiere Dummheit sein (siehe Habeck bei Maischberger), denn andernfalls bliebe nur noch abgrundtiefe Bosheit übrig.

There are many parts in your writing that have been rewritten from various Wikipedia articles in different languages.
Although you provided some general sources, it is recommended that you provide proper quoting for the text that was copied and re-written.
For example:
I'll be happy to add a remark that facts from Wikipedia or other sources have been used next time around. No big deal.
Other than that, what I did is called "research" and there is nothing wrong with that. I studied multiple articles in multiple different languages, to the tune of over twenty hours.
I have not "quoted" anything, but went through great lengths to rephrase the information to NOT copy and paste it, as your example of my misdeeds also demonstrates. There is only so many ways to skin a cat, when it comes to conveying facts.
Of course, I can do what many others do: just slap my photos on, collect my rewards, and be done. It's a lot quicker that way for me, wouldn't you say?
Your accusation is way off the mark.
The rewording is very similar to the original sentences. No book with such evident rewriting would pass without the author being accused of plagiarism.
Please use quotes instead, when your rewording looks almost identical to the original text.
O.K., I'm just going to post without text, if at all. Like I said, less work for me. I don't have time for this kind of nonsense.
It is much easier and quicker to simply copy/paste that text and mark it as a quote with a source, instead of time-consuming re-writing of it.
