Nerd By Northwest #290 – “The New Hire”

Yes, "Pickles" here is not only a cook but a top notch artificer! Which in D&D 5th edition terms means an inventor that mixes magic & science to make various magical items and contraptions. I played her as a sidekick on our recent run through the Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign, and she really grew on me. While my characters almost always tend to be a bit on the goofy or prankster side, Pickles was the first one that was full-time comedy material.
Imagine a genius inventor with a high Intelligence score and knack for building and trying new things. Now add in a low Wisdom score, a love of fire & explosions, and the term "safety measures" oddly missing from her vocabulary. Then throw in being a goblin (creatures that tend to be reckless and diabolical to start with), and you've got a character that's great for annoying the DM and other players! 😈
And while a certain dragon in that campaign was ultimately responsible for burning down our party's inn in Icewind Dale, I was thinking the dragon only sped up what was inevitable. With Pickles around long enough, any old wooden structure is not going to be long for this world.
So yeah... she'll fit in perfectly with this crew.

I did love the Tinker Gnomes from Dragonlance... Actually, my first exposure to Tinker Gnomes was from the D&D Dragonlance Campaign Sourcebook (1st edition I think). I had never read any of the novels before that, but just fell in love with the write-up of the Gnomes. They had to make all new engineering rules just for them.
Oh yes, Dragonlance Tinker Gnomes were definitely some of the inspiration behind creating Pickles. She may not go into the insane level of complexity that Tinker Gnomes usually do, but she DOES share their inability to separate the dangerous/bad ideas from the productive/good ones...
That's epic. I need to admit, I'm jealous that I didn't think of it. Very, very awesome.
Don't want those missions to be too serious. A little chaos livens things up.
