Tras haber dado inicio a una una serie de artículos que haré sobre las diferentes películas del UCM, toca ahora hablar de la segunda película se la saga, es decir, "Hulk: El Hombre Increíble" ("The Incredible Hulk" en inglés).
The Incredible Hulk es una película con un papel muy particular en esta franquicia, pues a diferencia de la mayoría de las películas de Marvel, Hulk no deja casi repercusiones al resto de las películas, ni han habido casi menciones a su historia. Así mismo, es una de las películas menos promocionadas por Disney, omitiéndola en los videos promocionales de Marvel y en campañas publicitarias. ¿Qué es lo que ocurre con esta película?

After having started a series of articles about the different movies of the MCU, it is now time to talk about the second movie of the saga, that is, "The Incredible Hulk".
The Incredible Hulk is a film with a very particular role in this franchise, because unlike most of the Marvel films, Hulk leaves almost no repercussions to the rest of the films, nor has there been almost no mention of his story. Likewise, it is one of the least promoted films by Disney, omitting it from Marvel promotional videos and ad campaigns. What is the deal with this film?
It should be noted that there may be spoilers in this article.
La película en sí
El típico conflicto del gigante verde
La historia del Increíble Hulk es la que todos conocemos sin necesidad de ser seguidores de Marvel o de los superhéroes, es decir, el debilucho científico que al enojarse se convierte en un poderoso monstruo verde y que deberá huír del ejército para no ser usado como experimento.
El primer problema en The Incredible Hulk está justamente ahí, pues más allá de lo esperable, no hay mayor novedad o descubrimiento en esta película. Su historia tampoco es lo suficientemente ingeniosa como para llamar nuestra atención lo suficiente, por lo que acaba convirtiéndose en una de esas películas que veríamos al llegar del trabajo cansados para despejar nuestras mentes, o para mitigar el silencio un domingo en casa.
The film itself
The typical green giant conflict
The story of the Incredible Hulk is the one we all know without being fans of Marvel or superheroes, that is, the wimpy scientist who when he gets angry turns into a strong green monster and must flee from the army to avoid being used as an experiment.
The first problem in The Incredible Hulk is precisely there, because beyond the expected, there is no major novelty or discovery in this film. Its story is also not clever enough to grab our attention enough, so it ends up becoming one of those movies that we would watch when we get home from work tired to clear our minds, or to mitigate the silence at home on a Sunday.
Un CGI decepcionante
Al realizar una película centrada en una criatura como Hulk, el aspecto que éste tenga será crucial para su impacto en el público. En las películas de The Avengers dieron vida al modelo 3D de Hulk que más conocemos y que tan bien ha pegado, pero en el caso de The Incredible Hulk, su apariencia dejó mucho que dejar.
Afortunadamente logró un mejor resultado que su predecesora Hulk del 2002 (Película ajena al UCM, protagonizada por Eric Bana y Jennifer Connely), pero seguía sin ser la calidad que el público habría esperado.
Disappointing CGI
When making a movie centered around a creature like Hulk, its look will be crucial to its impact on the audience. In The Avengers movies they brought to life the 3D model of Hulk that we know best and that has stuck so well, but in the case of The Incredible Hulk, his appearance left a lot to be desired.
Fortunately it did a better job than its 2002 predecessor Hulk (non MCU movie, starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connely), but it still wasn't the quality audiences would have expected.

Los inconvenientes de Hulk en Marvel
Aunque The Incredible Hulk resultó bastante olvidable, no fue sólo su crítica negativa lo que mantuvo a esta película alejada del resto de su universo, varios otros factores influyeron en todo esto.
Edward Norton y su relación con Hollywood
Hace años que Edward Norton es una de las estrellas de Hollywood que mucha gente conoce, gracias a su participación en películas como "The Fight Club" o "American Story X", entre otras.
Estas películas lo han posicionado entre los grandes actores, sin embargo, Norton también se ha ganado fama de ser un actor difícil para trabajar con él, por sus constantes intromisiones en el proceso creativo y la frecuencia con la que desobedece órdenes si prefiere hacer las cosas de orta forma.
The Incredible Hulk no fue una excepción, el actor sólo accedió unirse al proyecto gracias a la oferta del director de tomar en cuenta sus contribuciones para el guión, y sin embargo, cuando el estudio rechazó muchas de estas ideas, terminó participando de forma muy distante en la promoción de la película. Finalmente el actor fue reemplazado por Mark Ruffalo en The Avengers, por lo que es otro de esos pocos actores de Marvel que ha sido reemplazado.
The downsides of Hulk at Marvel.
Although The Incredible Hulk turned out to be quite forgettable, it wasn't just its negative reviews that kept this movie away from the rest of its universe, several other factors played into all of this.
Edward Norton and his relationship with Hollywood
For years Edward Norton has been one of the Hollywood stars that many people know, thanks to his participation in films like "The Fight Club" or "American Story X", among others.
These films have positioned him among the great actors, however, Norton has also earned a reputation for being a difficult actor to work with, for his constant meddling in the creative process and the frequency with which he disobeys orders if he prefers to do things in a different way.
The Incredible Hulk was no exception, the actor only agreed to join the project thanks to the director's offer to take into account his contributions to the script, and yet, when the studio rejected many of these ideas, he ended up participating in a very distant way in the promotion of the film. Eventually the actor was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers, making him another one of those few Marvel actors who has been replaced.
Los derechos entre Universal y Disney
Antes de la adquisición de Marvel Studios por parte de Disney, los derechos cinematográficos de los superhéroes de Marvel Comics estaban distribuidos entre diferentes compañías. El acuerdo de Marvel Studios con éstas se centraba en coproducir películas y distribuir las ganancias, mientras se construía un universo cinematográfico que aumentaría el interés por estos superhéroes. Hasta ese momento el acuerdo incluía a Iron Man, Thor y el Capitán América que se encontraban en manos de Paramount Pictures, y finalmente Hulk, cuyos derechos los tenía Universal Studios.
Tras Disney comprar Marvel Studios, compraron también los derechos de los superhéroes que tenía Paramount, pero el caso de Hulk fue distinto pues sus derechos quedaron en manos de Universal. Al final, Disney tenía libertad para usar al personaje de Bruce Banner en cuantos proyectos quisiera, pero a la hora de hacer una película sobre éste, Universal tendría prioridad para encargarse de la distribuición de la película y quedarse con una gran parte de la ganancia. Esto sumado a lo poco exitoso que estaba resultando el personaje en sus películas propias, resultaba poco conveniente.
El hecho de que el superhéroe no haya tenido más películas propias, también hacía que hubiera pocos motivos para promocionar la película del 2008, por lo tanto, el personaje fue utilizado de forma aparte y el estudio se centró en hacer películas de otros superhéroes, colocando a Hulk como un superhéroe secundario (No por nada, la batalla final contra Thanos en Avengers: Endgame da el principal protagonismo a Iron Man, Thor y el Capitán América, mientras Hulk a pesar de ser originalmente de los principales, acaba arrimado junto al resto de superhéroes).
The rights between Universal and Disney.
Prior to Marvel Studios acquisition by Disney, the film rights to Marvel Comics superheroes were distributed among different companies. The Marvel Studios agreement with these companies focused on co-producing films and sharing the profits, while building a cinematic universe that would increase interest in these superheroes. Up to that point the agreement included Iron Man, Thor and Captain America which were held by Paramount Pictures, and finally Hulk, whose rights were held by Universal Studios.
After Disney bought Marvel Studios, they also bought the rights to the superheroes held by Paramount, but the case of Hulk was different as its rights remained in the hands of Universal. In the end, Disney was free to use the character of Bruce Banner in as many projects as they wanted, but when it came time to make a movie about him, Universal would have priority to handle the distribution of the film and keep a large part of the profit. This, plus the fact that the character was not very successful in his own films, was not very convenient.
The fact that the superhero had no more films of his own also meant that there was less reason to promote the 2008 film, so the character was used separately and the studio focused on making films of other superheroes, placing Hulk as a secondary superhero (Not for nothing, the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame gives the main protagonism to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, while Hulk despite originally being one of the main ones, ends up set aside along with the rest of the superheroes).
El futuro del gigante verde
Cuando alguien me preguntaba sobre las películas del UCM, mi comentario de The Incredible Hulk siempre incluía que era la más prescindible de todas, pues nada de lo que cuenta es reutilizado en la saga salvo por Bruce Banner cuyas características son igualmente muy fáciles de entender sin ver su película.
Incluso las puertas que dejó abiertas para próximas secuelas permanecieron sin uso durante todo este tiempo, cosas como el haber dejado vivo a la Abominación (Hecho que en la película no tiene mucho sentido, más allá de la posibilidad de reutilizar al personaje) y la última aparición de Tim Blake Nelson como Samuel Sterns, en la que se ve el inicio de su transformación en el villano Líder, sin que éste vuelva a aparecer o ser nombrado en ninguna película posterior.
En el 2016, por primera vez utilizaron a otro personaje de dicha película, tratándose de Thaddeus Ross en Captain America: Civil War, interpretado nuevamente por William Hurt, sin embargo, aunque su papel es el mismo, no hay en Civil War ningún tipo de referencia a los acontecimientos de The Incredible Hulk, por lo que seguía siendo viable la opción de omitirla.
Sin embargo, tras la llegada de Disney+ y su fuerte relación con el contenido del UCM, se han una gran cantidad de anuncios que incluyen también más elementos de esta película. Desde los tráilers de "Shang-Chi y la Leyenda de los Siete Anillos" pudimos echar un vistazo a lo que sería una aparición de la Abominación en la película. En el tercer episodio de What If...? pudimos ver referencias directas a The Incredible Hulk por primera vez, al mostrar a Betty Ross y a Thaddeus Ross en la escena del campus universitario con Bruce Banner (con la voz de Mark Ruffalo esta vez).
Finalmente, hay anunciada una serie para Disney+ titulada "She-Hulk", sobre una heroína derivada de los cómics de Hulk. Para dicha serie está confirmada la participación de Ruffalo y además, la de Tim Roth nuevamente como la Abominación. Así que más allá de qué habrá cambiado en las intenciones del estudio, es un hecho que están comenzando a dar más uso a los elementos sacados de esta película.
The future of the green giant
Whenever someone would ask me about the MCU movies, my commentary on The Incredible Hulk always included that it was the most expendable of them all, as nothing he tells is reused in the saga except for Bruce Banner whose characteristics are very easy to understand without seeing his movie anyway.
Even the doors it left open for future sequels remained unused during all this time, things like having left Abomination alive (Fact that in the film does not make much sense, beyond the possibility of reusing the character) and the last appearance of Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, in which we see the beginning of his transformation into the Leader villain, without him ever appearing or being named again in any subsequent film.
In 2016, for the first time they used another character from that film, being Thaddeus Ross in Captain America: Civil War, played again by William Hurt, however, although his role is the same, there is no reference in Civil War to the events of The Incredible Hulk, so it was still a viable option to omit it.
However, after the arrival of Disney+ and its strong relationship with MCU content, there have been a plethora of announcements that include more elements of this film as well. From the trailers for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings" we got a glimpse of what would be an appearance of the Abomination in the film. In the third episode of What If...? we got to see direct references to The Incredible Hulk for the first time, by showing Betty Ross and Thaddeus Ross in the college campus scene with Bruce Banner (voiced by Mark Ruffalo this time).
Finally, there is a series announced for Disney+ titled "She-Hulk", about a heroine derived from the Hulk comics. Ruffalo's participation is confirmed for that series, as well as Tim Roth again as the Abomination. So beyond what has changed in the studio's intentions, it is a fact that they are starting to make more use of the elements taken from this movie.
Conclusión
No por nada The Incredible Hulk está en cualquier top que puedan encontrar de las peores películas del UCM, por más potencial que este personaje, su historia o su equipo hubieran podido tener, el resultado fue una de las películas más olvidables de la franquicia.

Sin embargo, tras verla una segunda vez durante el maratón de todas las películas del UCM que vi hace algunos meses, pude darme cuenta de que todos los elementos que no funcionan están tan presentes en el recuerdo, que es fácil omitir ciertas cosas rescatables. La actuación de Tim Roth es la más destacable a mi parecer, el humor de la película es moderado para dar más espacio al drama y la acción, también hay varios momentos que vale la pena destacar, tales como el cameo de Lou Ferrigno, quien interpretaba a Hulk en la serie de televisión de los 80 ¿Existirá la posibilidad de que alguna vez veamos a su Hulk interactuar con el UCM en el multiverso?
En todo caso, la película está muy lejos de ser una recomendación que yo haría, pero al menos es capaz de mantenerte entretenido un rato.
Conclusion.
Not for nothing The Incredible Hulk is on any top you can find of the worst MCU movies, for as much potential as this character, his story or his team might have had, the result was one of the most forgettable movies of the franchise.
However, after watching it a second time during the marathon of all the MCU movies I watched a few months ago, I was able to realize that all the elements that don't work are so present in the memory, that it's easy to omit certain redeemable things. The performance of Tim Roth is the most remarkable in my opinion, the humor of the movie is moderated to give more space to the drama and action, there are also several moments worth noting, such as the cameo of Lou Ferrigno, who played Hulk in the 80's TV series Is there a chance that we will ever see his Hulk interact with the MCU in the multiverse?
In any case, the movie is far from a recommendation I'd make, but at least it's capable of keeping you entertained for a while.

Excelente reseña y muy completa además sobre los inicios, desarrollos y dificultades de este miembro de los Avengers. Hulk siempre ha sido menospreciado, creo que debido a que solo es una fuerza bruta mutante que solo aporta músculos. En la primera película de Avengers no lo sentía así, pero después de leer tu reseña, pude notar muchas cosas que pasaban desapercibidas. Lo de Norton da para una telenovela, aunque ese film me gusto, creo que fue la elección de director donde se equivocaron, claro, seguro Norton se metió mucho en el proceso creativo, porque como dices, tiene fama de actor difícil. Eso me molesta, el es un gran actor, pero cuando se contrata a un actor, este debe de respetar las jerarquías y cumplir su función, el director es el que manda. Pero bueno, yo creo que la filmacion de esa versión de Hulk da para una historia completa jajaja
Ciertamente de nada sirve buscar lucirse sobre todos los demás en una industria donde predomina el trabajo en equipo. Quien no sabe cumplir con su papel, acaba estropeando sus posibilidades de trabajo (Y más con niveles como su historia en "American Story X"). Pero sí, las historias de las producciones con Norton son tan intensas que dan para escribir algo con ellas jajajaja

Yo estoy completamente de acuerdo con que The Incredible Hulk es la peor película del UCM.
Hulk es un personaje muy interesante y jugoso el cual desarrollar por obvias razones; su conflicto de seguir siendo un ser humano, pero no poder tener emociones negativas fuertes me parece algo increíblemente analizable, que si hubiese estado en las manos correctas podría haber tenido un desarrollo tan bueno como Tony Stark.

Capaz algo así habría querido Norton, viendo que su versión fue rechazado por Marvel por estar falta de acción y emoción. No sería sorpresa puesto que una idea como esa sería algo arriesgada pues tendría que ser muy bien manejada para que funcione comercialmente, precisamente Marvel no es una compañía muy famosa por arriesgar sino por buscar aprovechar las fórmulas lo más posible. Una lástima.
