Mobile Blogging

Yes, people! You read it right! Mobile blogging is a thing. People really do it. I do. Massively. The majority of my Hive blogs are created via my mobile phone -- from photography, cover image editing, HTML, etc. - I do most of them on my phone.

It takes a lot of getting used to, but it is doable.

So imagine my delight when I discovered about the Hive Keychain for mobile.

Hive Keychain, developed by @stoodkev, is an extension for accessing Hive-enabled distributed applications, or "Dapps" in your normal Chrome browser. If you haven't started using it yet, I really think you should. We cannot really be too careful with our Hive accounts. I came about this comprehensive review of the Hive Keychain extension which you can also refer to for more information.

Hive Keychain for Mobile

Hive Keychain for mobile is available for both Android and iOS users. More information about setting up the app can be found here:

Not Maximizing The App

So yes, I have had this application on my phone for a few months already, but I barely used it. I was using Chrome mobile browser to access peakD and could pretty much do anything there - using HiveSigner.

How do is even use this app?

Was a question that popped in my head, when every Hive Dapp I used would not connect to it. At the most, I just used it as a repository of my keys and if I need to login somewhere, say Splinterlands app, I had to still copy-paste my posting key!

That did not make any sense to me. If the purpose of the app was to encrypt my keys, then why then am I not able to use it?

So just like that, I totally ignored the app for many months.

... until last night.

As I was coaching a friend on how to access her splinterlands account, I had to log off/log in the app. When logging in again, I was asked for my posting key. Nope, I do not want to copy-paste my keys again!

Re-discovering the Hive Keychain For Mobile

So upon setting up your Hive accounts on the app (again refer to the linked article above on how to do this) you will see your Hive wallet details - primary coins (Hive, Hive Power, HBD) and another tab for tokens.

Here on this page you can also find any pending rewards to be claimed, resource credits, voting power, and vote value.

Useful, but there's much more!

Those 3 little dots!

Now I am not sure if this button was here before, but more functions can be accessed with these little dots at the top of the page, more specifically the BROWSER.

Once you enter the browser, you can explore the Hive dapps currently supported by the Hive Keychain.

Upon clicking the "plus" (+) icon at the bottom, you will see these options.

Welcome to the colorful world of Hive!

Come explore Hive with us!

Tool

So far, I have successfully connected the PeakD, Splinterlands, and LeoDex dapps via the Hive Keychain. I tried to connect through DBuzz but instead of logging me on, it was still asking for the posting key to be entered.

There is also an option to mark the URL's as favorite and see your browsing history. I have yet to find the option to "clear browsing history" though.

I am really happy that I was able to explore the Hive Keychain app last night. It makes using our Hive accounts safer especially on the mobile phone where the display screens are small and accidental clicks/copy-paste actions could land us to big problems with our account (aka hacks).

BTW, as I was browsing through this morning, I found this post by @ylich about his review of the Hive Keychain for mobile. What a coincidence! LOL. I had second thoughts about posting this topic but since I have already taken screenshots from the app while exploring it last night, I might as well do. 😉

I hope you do consider using Hive Keychain - Chrome extension and for mobile, if you haven't. It is a tool all of us Hive users must have!

Many thanks to the @keychain devs and team for creating this for us!

Amazing!! I was giving up on doing anything mobile because I hated having to copy my keys. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, this is quite a handy tool.
Thanks for passing by!

Hey, thanks for the review!
I just started, or I want to start, posting via my phone. I currently try out the ecency app, but I'm not sure yet which is the best solution.
So are you posting on peakd in your browser? What is your experience?

I also have encency but it is too slow for me, and it hangs most time. I'm not sire if that's my device or the app though.

I used to blog using peakd using mobile Chrome browser. Every peakd feature as it is on desktop is there, the only difference is the small display. 😅

As for the peakd from Keychain browser, the back button does not work so if you want to go to the previous screen that is an issue, but not something you can't work around with.

Thanks for the review! =)
Can I ask which device you are using, I see there is only one column of tabs in your in App browser when there should be actually two, I want to test this out

Thank you!

I am using Huwaei Nova 3.

It's my second day using the app browser, mainly peakd. Here are some i noticed:

  • The browser back button does not work. So if say for example I clicked a post on my feed and am done reading, back button wont take me back to my feed. I have to click the peakd icon at the top left again. Of course that takes me back to the top most post again instead of from where I left off.
  • there's no refresh button (pull down to refresh)
  • sometimes the keyboard covers the preview when typing, like this one.

I presume you are still working on a lot of features here. So far there are ways that i can work around with the above observation. Looking forward to more developments and thanks again for creating this app.

I ll look into the back button but it's supposed to be directly implemented in the webview. I guess its due to the fact that peakd doesn't actually change page when you navigate, it rewrites the url instead, I'll look into it.

For the second point, I didn't put the pull down to refresh yet, but there's a button for refreshing the page in the middle of the bottom bar.

For the third point, I don't think there's a way around this, mobile devices handle inputs that way by default, opening the keyboard just underneath the active input. Even if something can be done, it would be on peakd side, since we cannot handle display of every dApp on our side case by case.

If you have any remarks or request features, don't hesitate to drop them on our Discord or Github =)

Fantastic overview of the Keychain app. I have been using it a lot recently and besides a few kinks that still need to be ironed out, it really is a great and safe way to handle keys on mobile.

Thanks! I've been using it a lot since then as well.now i dont have to worry about copy-pasting keys aa much as before.

That’s great! I use it on my computer all the time but I wasn’t sure about my phone. I don’t know if it’s available on the Apple store. I’ll have to take a look! I know when I tried to download it before it wouldn’t do anything. I’ll have to go look again!

Yeah, really did not do as much before. I'm happy with the progress of the app. It's something we really need.

Update: I downloaded the app and I love it! It's super easy and I can use all of the keychain stuff on the app instead of restricted to my computer. Makes doing transactions a lot easier! Power up day should be pretty easy lol. Other huge improvement for me, Brave doesn't let me upload pictures on PeakD for whatever reason. Tried everything but no dice. With the keychain app and browser it has, I can finally upload pictures! Loving that lol. Thanks for getting me into this app! I thought we were lost not having one for phones but this is great. Peakmonsters is also great to browse on the app.

Awesome work @stoodkev!

Glad you like it =)

Great post. I'm sorry I'm too late to vote on it.

I didn't know keychain had added options to sign in to peakd until I read this post today.

Although I don't write posts from mobile, now I can comment on my phone 👍

Happy days 🙂
