Vote Efficiency

in LeoFinance4 years ago

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I've got a bit of a different type of post but one that I've been meaning to write. It's about voting efficiency and how we can improve it perhaps.

Efficiently Voting

Are you voting efficiently or not? That's been a sizable factor for me since I am trying to get a decent bang for my buck, so-to-speak, with my voting habits. I want to vote on as many of the smaller accounts as I can to bring them at least to the dust threshold for payout but not vote too strongly so that I reduce my voting power drastically. Thankfully there are some ways for us to see the data and make some conclusions on it!

The first screenshot was taken off of BeeMe.icu a months ago when the calculation worked. I haven't been able to get it to work again so I'm glad I grabbed it. The website doesn't work at all right now so that's a bit unfortunate.

Decent efficiency!

I was able to grab this screenshot just today from the pretty great Hivestats.io website which is run by the Leo Finance folks here in this community! Side note, is the efficiency section broken? Why does it say NaN%? To me it's not calculating the efficiency properly somehow, so hopefully that can be fixed!

So some of my votes were pretty well received on the other end! I took a risk and voted some of these posts a bit stronger than I normally do, seen in the 1st two votes. I got a 314% return on my vote in the hive power payout! That's probably my highest one yet!

More of the normal votes I give are below that. I try to vote between .024 to 0.060 on many posts so that I can vote on more of them rather than burning all my voting power on one post. Sometimes I get tired or lazy though and don't feel like doing much interaction so I just find a newer post and bam here you go, 80-100% upvote from me! Then I keep going. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often, for my voting power's sake.

Check out your efficiency!

I recommend checking out your efficiency for your voting habits to see where you can improve it, if possible!

image.png

From the https://hivestats.io/@cmplxty website (change it to your name of course), navigate to the "Rewards" section then go to "Pending" seen on the left. From there, you are going to change it to "Curation Rewards" and make sure you "Hide Dust Payout" so that you aren't inundated with useless metrics (a dust threshold, for those that aren't aware, is the minimum vote value required to receive a payment. Last I heard/remember, the minimum your post or comment needs to reach in order to receive some money is 0.025$. Lower than that, you don't make any money off the post or comment. This is also why I tell people don't bother voting on comments unless you have lots of power since the vote ends up getting wasted!)

For me, I filtered by the most efficient votes and went down. Lots of my votes were pretty good, which has some additional positive implications for me. If I voted on someones post and brought it to at least dust threshold, and then lots of other people voted on it to bring it up to a few dollars, I received a good return on my investment for me giving them at least a minimum vote, regardless if no one else found the content. I kind of think of it as "here's a guarantee you will get at least a little something on this post" with the hopes of others coming across it to value it and vote on it as well.

image.png

Now I don't normally go around and just blindly voting on things and never talking to the person. I most often find peoples posts and give it a once-over before I give it a vote. If I vote on it, 99% of the time I'm giving them a comment as well because the other very important part of this is engagement. If we are an environment with just voting but no engaging between people then this place will go downhill on the back of a rocket. Many of the people who have been here the longest have the saying "I came here for the crypto and money in the beginning, and I stayed because of the community" or some iteration of that. I too, am strongly in that boat. I had the intentions of making some money on here but then once I connected with lots of people, you're damn sure I stayed because of the interactions I've had! I've met some incredible people on here, which is why we need to engage and talk with the newer users. I try to give them that experience and some tips as much as I can in the beginning so they feel welcome and stick around.

Thank you for sharing this information man! I personally don't have any idea what to do with my power and I've been struggling with it. This might help me. So thank you! :)

Glad you were able to get some ideas with it! Thanks for checking it out. For getting curation with not a whole lot of hive power, it’s better to vote on a lot of things at like 40-60% than it is to vote on a couple things at 100% and waste all your voting power at once. This way you get curation from 4 or 5 posts at a similar rate than 1 or 2 posts at a similar rate.

That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the 100% you gave me though! So thanks for that! :)

I don't know! LOL
I just want to give 100% when I upvote a post. Because when I click the upvote, it means that I really like that post and feel the intentions behind.

Stellar educational content here! I literally learned so much reading this that I am gonna have to start integrating your systems into mine. This is why I love the blockchain and the people who progress the future by being here. My only problem is staying consistent with my posts but I am working on a schedule right now that will permit more time for Hive content creation.

Thanks so much for the great comment man! I’m glad you learned something here, I learn things on here almost daily so I know how awesome it is.

I wouldn’t necessarily worry about posting a lot. The best tip I can give is to get into commenting and engaging with people as much as you can. That’s how to get followers and get your brand out there. If you hadn’t commented on here I may not have found you for months, if at all.

The curation method I’m doing isn’t going to work for everyone but it is helpful if you’ve got probably more than 2-3k hive power so your votes are at the dust threshold or over it.

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Awesome post. I'm not a numbers girl.so I rarely look at my efficiency, but I think my voting/commenting behaviour is exactly like yours. However, some of the bigger accounts I might engage on but not vote - they have enough already and I'd rather give it to the little guy. X

Yeah! I hear you on that. I sometimes will vote on the bigger accounts to try and capture a bit of curation rewards. I think I'm actually going to adjust my auto-vote for Dan's posts lol I had it set to 100% but I'm thinking 30-40% is more reasonable so I don't piss through my voting power. I don't earn much curation on his posts anyways now that I think of it.

I usually stop by some of the bigger posts but most of the time I don't unless it's someone like Taraz or Galen. Most of the time I don't get any engagement back, even in some of the most prominent ones that talk to others, a bit unfortunate if you ask me but what can you do.

Thanks for checking it out! I will have to take a look at your efficiency and see what you're working with! I know your commenting is fantastic so we are kindred spirits!

Yeah I don't get engagement either. Refuse to autovote Dan or the whales .. they get enough imo! Though I do.occasionally manual vote just for a bit of the pie, though I usually regret it and feel dirty haha. But, those extra rewards can go back to the little guy, right?

Got a little tag happy with this one but shared this on Twitter! #posh!

That's some pretty good going on the efficiency front! I just vote whenever I see the post and not too fussed about the curation game, just happy to comment and get a token amount for voting.

Think my APR on voting on Hive using Hivestats is like 2% lol!

OK just had a look, turns out I'm doing better than I thought with 93% efficiency and 4% APR!

LOL Well you've got a lot more HP to work with! Your comment game is far more superb than mine but I'm catching up to you.

I think once I get to like 25k HP or so I won't be so picky with voting but that's a few years away I think so I don't know what will happen then lol

Saw your updated comment and it looks like your voting game is better than you thought! I think that's some solid APR if you ask me. I didn't look at my APR on the main page before but checking it now, I'm sitting nicely at 9.8% APR. I will definitely take that!

Thanks for checking it out!

Haha I do lease out a lot of my HP to curie as they are full time curation guilds. I'm just a casual gazer, flicking my way through feeds and seeing what's happening when I can!

I'd say when you get more HP, having an eye on the APR would probably be even more prudent as your returns would be a lot higher compared to where you are now. 9.8% is pretty awesome mate! Targeting 10%?

Thanks for sharing your experience in upvoting and the curation reward openly!

!tip

You’re welcome, the more people learn things like this the better off they will be. We all want to earn more, these are some of the things I’ve learned along the way that have paid off!

Thanks so much for the tip!

🎁 Hi @cmplxty! You have received 0.1 HIVE tip from @fun2learn!

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide.

Good post! To get high efficiency, I think you need to vote around 5 minutes after the post created. That is before anybody votes.

Thanks for checking it out! I wasn’t sure if you were a real person lol you always seem to reblog my posts so I figured you were a bot lol good to know you’re a real person!

Yeah the efficiency does depend on when you vote on the post but it’s a tough battle to do that. Some posts I vote quickly and get good rewards, others I don’t I am not sure the formula for that yet lol

Nicely explained man and wow, great HP returns!
My vote efficiency is somewhere around 80%-130% 'cause I only curate manually. 1,50$ curation rewards for me this week! hehehe!
Hivestats has been an excellent tool so far!

Yeah man your curation game is looking awesome! You’re at an annual curation rate of 8.6%, that’s really good! Especially since most of the posts you are curating are skating stuff and you give them the highest votes so that’s fantastic!

I looked at the skate account too and that’s at 7.5% annually so that’s really good.

I got some lucky votes on mine so I was able to pull some sweet rates but some of mine are pretty bad too lol

Very informative post. Upvoted with our trail.

Thank you for enlightening us !

Cheers 🥂

Thanks for the support I appreciate it! I also am glad you enjoyed the content. Voting can be a tricky subject with some, some feel that you give max votes to everyone but then you’re left with just voting on a small handful of accounts instead of lots of people. I’ll take lots of people, personally!

fmic5u.jpg

My curation😋Here I have to mark whether we are voting by hand or hiveauto. Of course there is also a manual vote. I think I can increase efficiency up to 18-19%.
What minute do you vote for?

That's some really good curation APR you've got dude! Do you follow Curie or something?

I manually vote 99% of my posts. The only one I don't is Dan's posts but I think I'm going to stop that soon, it's not returning what I hoped it did. With that I don't really pay attention to minutes, I just vote. I know some say that voting at 5 minutes is the best. I don't really care to get to that level of granularity, maybe if I get to orca status I might, trying to maximize.

Having an efficiency of 18% annually is crazy! Just think that a bank account gives you like .1% APR. imagine getting 18?!

Thanks for sharing your stats man, that's the best APR I've seen so far!

I vote hiveauto. I have list and one time for 14 days I check my curation. Yes manual vote too if I see good post for me. Time? Yes the best time is 5 minute. I have 4.9 minute to hiveauto. Check one week this😀 Have a nice day!✌

Great post. I often see how patiently you are guiding people especially new comers in #Hive which is a great thing. Because of this we see day by day how #posh is shared on #Twitter as we are all reminded by your good comments on how we can utilized other social media to bring value on #Hive. A great salute to you my friend.

Thank you so much for the support! I appreciate the recognition and great comment. I’ve found a lot of enjoyment being out there meeting new people every day, trying to help them along and learn the platform. This type of thing will be what makes hive successful and better for us all! I know I certainly could have used guidance in my beginning!

People like you need to be supported for showing great effort. Keep doing the good job!

I am not doing bad either :D

c0bur5.jpg

Really nice votes you’ve got there! Keep it up. Curating is a lot of fun in my opinion!

You’ve got a lot more HP than I do so it’s a little easier to make great curation rewards! Looking forward to when I’m in the big leagues like that lol

Well. I have leased mine. You have double the HP I have.
I have 35000 leased via dlease :p

Ah I wasn’t sure if you were doing leases or getting it from other accounts. Good stuff! I’m going to be trying to maximize my hive power holdings as much as I can now that I’m working from home and can actually stay up a bit later to do some curation. I didn’t get that time commuting to work lol bedtime was really early before!

For me this is the best I can do currently :p
But the leased HP did give me 30hp more a month compared to what I paid for a while. My APR has fallen, so not sure anymore :c

Thats good! :D
I would rather focus on arthor rewards its way better for smaller accounts to start with!

If you know how to write, which I dont :p

Why does it say NaN%?

NaN means Not a Number. I think that software will sometimes display NaN when it’s supposed to display a numerical value but one of the input variables is non-numerical.

But I’m not a dev; maybe somebody else has a better explanation.

Ah thanks, I figured it was involved in some kind of error on the formula side. It looks like the Leo folks fixed it though! This week I checked it out and the calculation worked well.
