Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, partially dislocated his left shoulder during the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday against the New York Yankees when he attempted to steal second base.
Ohtani 's status for Monday's Game 3 in New York is unclear. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts, said Ohtani "had a little subluxation in his left shoulder" and would have imaging tests Saturday night or Sunday.
"We'll know more in the next few days," Roberts said . "The strength was excellent. Range of motion is good, so we're encouraged. But obviously I can't speculate because I haven't had the scans yet. So once we get the scans, we'll know more."

The Indiana Fever fired coach Christie Sides on Sunday, the organization announced. Sides went 33-47 in her two seasons with the squad, including going 20-20 this season. The Fever made the playoffs as the sixth seed and were swept in the first round by the Connecticut Sun.
Indiana is the sixth team to make a coaching change this offseason, joining Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles. All of the coaches let go had three years or less experience.
Whoever takes over the Fever will have a strong young core to work with, led by Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. The pair have won the last two WNBA Rookie of the Year awards.

Uma briga entre cerca de 150 torcedores de organizadas do Palmeiras e do Cruzeiro, com pedaços de madeira e fogo, deixou uma pessoa morta e outras 20 feridas na madrugada deste domingo em Mairiporã, informou a Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF).
Todas as vítimas são cruzeirenses, de acordo com a polícia, e ao menos dois ônibus da torcida do time mineiro foram atingidos. Um deles foi incendiado e continua no local, fora da rodovia, enquanto o outro teve os vidros quebrados e está na base da PRF aguardando remoção.
As vítimas foram socorridas por ambulâncias e encaminhadas para o Pronto Socorro: 18 foram para o hospital Anjo Gabriel em Mairiporã, e três para o hospital de Franco da Rocha.
O homem que morreu tinha 30 anos de idade, sofreu ferimentos graves e foi encaminhado para o hospital, mas faleceu após receber atendimento. Um dos feridos sofreu um ferimento de arma de fogo no abdômen, mas não corre perigo de vida.
Ainda segundo a Polícia Rodoviária Federal, a emboscada ocorreu por volta das 5h20, no km 65 da via, sentido Belo Horizonte. Informações iniciais dos policiais dão conta de que ônibus com os torcedores rivais se cruzaram, pararam na via e iniciaram o tumulto.
A Secretaria de Segurança Pública, procurada pelo ge, informou que a Polícia Civil investiga a briga e que, de acordo com informações preliminares, torcedores do Cruzeiro sofreram uma emboscada de torcedores organizados do Palmeiras.
O boletim de ocorrência está em elaboração pela Delegacia de Mairiporã, que requisitou perícia ao local. O delegado Ortiza, de Mairiporã, disse que os policiais da ocorrência vão ser ouvidos e que pelo menos 60 torcedores do Cruzeiro vão prestar depoimento.
A Polícia Militar (PM) foi acionada por testemunhas para ir ao local atender a ocorrência. O Corpo de Bombeiros também foi mobilizado e apagou as chamas do ônibus. As autoridades não informaram ainda qual torcida viajava no veículo. Ainda não há informações se entre os feridos tem alguém que se queimou.
Segundo a PRF, os palmeirenses tinham acompanhado o empate por 2 a 2 entre o Palmeiras e o Fortaleza, no sábado na capital paulista. Os cruzeirenses, de acordo com os policiais, retornavam de Curitiba, no Paraná, onde o Cruzeiro perdeu por 3 a 0 para o Athletico no Brasileiro.
O Cruzeiro, no fim desta manhã, se posicionou lamentando o ocorrido.

Initial strength and range-of-motion tests came back positive, Roberts said. Ohtani, whose injury is defined as a minor dislocation, was expected to undergo an MRI on his shoulder Sunday.

Dillon Lawson is getting another shot on a big league coaching staff — and the Yankees will see plenty of him.
The Red Sox on Sunday promoted Lawson, the former Yankees hitting coach who was fired at the All-Star break last season, to be their assistant hitting coach on Alex Cora’s staff.
Lawson spent this season as the Red Sox’ minor league hitting coordinator, working mostly with the upper levels of their farm system, and now will be one of three assistants under hitting coach Peter Fatse.
The Yankees had promoted Lawson from their own minor league system to become their hitting coach entering the 2022 season.
They ranked second in runs per game in Lawson’s first year, thanks in large part to Aaron Judge’s record-breaking 62 homer season.
But the Yankees struggled in the first half of 2023, which led to Brian Cashman citing the need for a new voice and making Lawson his first in-season coaching dismissal during his long tenure in The Bronx.
Sean Casey replaced Lawson as hitting coach when the Yankees came out of the All-Star break before James Rowson took over in the offseason.
“[Lawson] has brought a lot of amazing content to improve a lot of aspects of our operation, especially on our player development side,” Cashman said last summer on the day he fired Lawson. “But clearly, when you’re dealing at the major league level, it’s a little bit different at times and that can take on a life of its own.”

A FIA pôs um ponto final na polêmica em torno das saídas de pista de Lando Norris em duelo com Max Verstappen no GP dos Estados Unidos, há uma semana, ao negar a revisão de uma punição imposta ao piloto da McLaren. Mas a questão ainda causa incomodo a Lewis Hamilton, que viveu experiência semelhante com o rival e pediu por mais rigor da F1 neste tipo de lance.
É interessante que as pessoas estejam falando sobre isso agora, porque a mesma coisa aconteceu comigo em 2021. Se você levar em conta o que houve no Brasil, por exemplo: na hora da freada você está na frente, mas aí o carro (na parte de dentro; geralmente, Verstappen) simplesmente tira o pé do freio e não faz a curva, e aí você é quem tem que sair da frente. Então, eles (comissários) dirão que vocês dois saíram da pista porém, não tiveram escolha porque precisavam evitar uma colisão - apontou o heptacampeão.
No caso de Hamilton, o incidente se deu quando eles brigavam pela liderança do GP de São Paulo em 2021. O heptacampeão havia largado em décimo lugar após punições mas fez uma série de ultrapassagens até chegar perto do rival, no fim da prova, na volta 48.
Verstappen espalhou o carro na curva da Descida do Lago para repelir a ultrapassagem do veterano, que já estava com quase todo o carro na frente, e os dois saíram do traçado. Os comissários da prova anotaram o lance mas não investigaram. A Mercedes pediu a revisão do ocorrido na terça-feira, dois dias depois da corrida, quando a página da F1 compartilhou o vídeo de bordo do holandês.
O vídeo revelava que Max freou tardiamente, não contornando a curva em sua totalidade. Ele justificou ter errado o ponto do ápice da curva e sofrido também com o desgaste dos pneus duros, que foram substituídos oito voltas antes. A FIA também rejeitou a petição do time alemão.
Definitivamente, é preciso fazer algo a respeito, porque isso está acontecendo muito agora. Você não deveria tirar o pé do freio, aumentar a velocidade, sair da pista e ainda assim não perder sua posição - cobrou Hamilton, durante o GP do México neste fim de semana.
Questionado sobre o episódio e também sobre as críticas de rivais acerca do episódio, Verstappen não ficou feliz com a repercussão do ocorrido e com as falas dos colegas de grid e defendeu-se:

No papel, era só mais um jogo de Campeonato Brasileiro. Mas na prática, a coincidência em dois dos três desfalques que o Flamengo terá no primeiro jogo da final da Copa do Brasil transformou o 4 a 2 sobre o Juventude em um "ensaio geral" para a decisão contra o Atlético-MG no próximo domingo. Filipe Luís indicou os substitutos, viu os escolhidos corresponderem e o time voltar a jogar bem e a vencer depois de duas partidas em que sequer fez gols.
Obviamente é preciso contextualizar esse número: na derrota por 2 a 0 para o Fluminense, o Flamengo jogou sem o seu meio de campo inteiro titular e chegou a fazer um bom primeiro tempo; já no 0 a 0 com o Corinthians na Copa do Brasil, atuou 75% do tempo com um jogador a menos e foi forçado a se defender para segurar a vantagem da partida de ida.
Mas voltemos ao Juventude. Na tarde do último sábado no Maracanã, Filipe Luís optou por Evertton Araújo na vaga do lesionado De la Cruz e por Michael no lugar do suspenso Bruno Henrique. A escolha no ataque era esperada, mas no meio de campo o técnico surpreendeu. Muitos torcedores esperavam ver o recém-contratado Alcaraz como segundo volante, até prevendo a retranca alviverde.
A opção por Evertton Araújo deixou o time com dois primeiros volantes em campo, mas sem ficar torto. Não teve um mais fixo e outro mais solto: ele e Pulgar jogaram em linha, subindo o bloco e voltando juntos. O jovem, de 21 anos, fez uma partida simples e segura. E ainda apareceu na frente em boa finalização de fora da área. Filipe Luís justificou a escolha como plano de jogo, porém, contra um oponente que atacaria pouco, faz mais sentido o teste pensando no Atlético-MG daqui a uma semana.
Para Michael, foi importante recuperar ritmo e confiança depois da lesão na coxa direita que o tirou de combate por pouco mais de um mês. Ele vinha entrando poucos minutos nos últimos jogos, mas contra o Juventude voltou a ser titular e a fazer um gol depois de aproximadamente dois meses. E ainda construiu a jogada do terceiro, marcado por Arrascaeta.
No quinto jogo sob o comando de Filipe Luís, o Flamengo apresentou o seu maior volume ofensivo até aqui. O técnico até falou na entrevista coletiva pós-jogo que não é fácil atacar uma linha de cinco (defensores), mas com Gerson e Arrascaeta inspirados, e com muita movimentação, o Rubro-Negro não teve tanta dificuldade assim. Foram 20 finalizações contra apenas quatro do Juventude e 11 grandes chances de gol.
Logo aos sete minutos, Gabigol deixou Arrascaeta na cara do gol, e ele soltou uma bomba para defesaça de Gabriel. No rebote, Michael não desperdiçou a segunda oportunidade. O próprio Robozinho teve mais uma chance aos 25, após receber do camisa 99 na área e chutar em cima do goleiro.
Foi só na etapa final que a porteira abriu. Logo aos três minutos, Gabigol converteu o pênalti polêmico marcado. E aos oito, Arrascaeta fez o terceiro gol com muita liberdade na entrada da área. O uruguaio depois retribuiu o passe de Gerson, aos 19, mas o meia mesmo com ângulo chutou de bico, em cima do goleiro (veja na imagem abaixo).
Depois disso, o Flamengo só voltou a assustar nos minutos finais, após a expulsão de Nenê. Aos 46, Arrascaeta recebeu de Plata na área e finalizou por cima do travessão. Três minutos depois, o equatoriano aproveitou passe de Gerson e desencantou com a camisa rubro-negra. E aos 52, o uruguaio chutou na rede pelo lado de fora.
Apesar do domínio absoluto no jogo, com 66% de posse de bola, o Flamengo tomou sustos contra um Juventude que teve 100% de eficiência e aproveitou as duas únicas chances de gol que teve. A forma como Filipe Luís gosta de atacar, com bastante gente, deixa o time vulnerável a contra-ataques. Foi assim que saiu o lançamento de João Lucas para Gilberto, nas costas de Léo Pereira, invadir a área e fuzilar Rossi. E o segundo gol foi num erro individual do goleiro argentino.

Abel Ferreira sabia o peso do confronto. O desempenho apresentado, contudo, acumulando falhas de decisão, esteve longe de uma equipe que quer ser campeã.

Foi ainda uma equipe frágil por dentro, deixando Raphael Veiga sobrecarregado, e sempre que o Fortaleza, forte em suas transições, se colocou para o jogo, conseguiu finalizar. Fez 10 tentativas contra 16 do Verdão, só que quatro foram no alvo e duas terminaram em gol.
Do lado alviverde, as chances criadas só tiveram resultado para garantir dois pênaltis - convertidos por Veiga e Estêvão -, enquanto outras oportunidades terminaram desperdiçadas, com destaque para lances de Gustavo Gómez, Veiga e Maurício, que poderiam ter dado números diferentes ao placar.
– Tivemos jogos em que tivemos muito menos bolas paradas e fizemos mais gols, e esses não conseguimos. Fica a sensação de que poderíamos produzir com mais calma e eficácia, mas é aceitar o resultado, prepararmos… e um jogo de cada vez – disse o técnico.

Ele, que já levou a melhor no GP da Austrália, ajudou a Ferrari a conquistar a quinta vitória do ano.ole position, o espanhol foi superado por Verstappen na largada, mas após uma bandeira amarela acionada pela batida de Alexander Albon e Yuki Tsunoda, ultrapassou o rival.
Max, em seguida, não deixou barato a aproximação de Norris - dias depois que outro confronto entre eles, nos Estados Unidos, virou até tema de debate entre os pilotos e a F1. Sem vencer há 10 GPs, holandês foi o 6º.

Verstappen seguiu roda com roda ao lado de Sainz nos primeiros metros e conseguiu contornar a primeira curva à frente do ferrarista. Logo atrás, Norris manteve-se em terceiro lugar, assim como Leclerc, na quarta colocação.
A corrida foi interrompida ainda na primeira volta com uma bandeira amarela, devido a um incidente envolvendo Alexander Albon e Yuki Tsunoda; os dois haviam largado próximos um ao outro, respectivamente em nono e 11º lugar.
O piloto da RB tentou ultrapassar por fora e tocou na roda do rival, perdendo a direção, rodando e deslizando em direção contrária ao sentido da pista até a barreira de proteção no fim da curva. O japonês ainda perdeu uma roda durante a batida, que danificou a Williams do rival e o forçou a parar na grama, em outro trecho da pista.
Pérez largou bem, beneficiando-se também dos incidentes que tiraram dois carros de sua frente, e foi de 18º a .13º No entanto, acabou punido em 5s por queimar a largada - embora estivesse, na realidade, posicionado de forma incorreta em seu colchete, o que afeta o sistema de detecção automática.
A bandeira verde reautorizou a disputa na sétima volta, permitindo que Sainz se aproximasse de Verstappen mas, ainda, sem poder usar a asa traseira móvel. Dois giros depois o espanhol assumiu a liderança com facilidade na reta principal.
Pelo rádio, o piloto da RBR se queixou de uma bateria sem potência em seu carro; logo em seguida, iniciaria uma série de movimentos polêmicos na prova, a partir da volta 16.
Primeiro, Max impediu que Norris o ultrapassasse ao empurrar o britânico para fora da pista quando o piloto da McLaren já havia colocado parte do carro à sua frente, na curva 4. Lando teve que cortar caminho pelo gramado e por isso, foi facilmente superado pelo rival na curva 8.
Para completar, o tricampeão ainda bateu na roda dianteira esquerda do rival, fazendo com que ambos mais uma vez saíssem da pista. Repetindo o feito do GP dos EUA, Leclerc aproveitou a briga da dupla e passou ambos, saltando do quarto para o segundo lugar. Pelos dois episódios, Max recebeu 20s de punição.
Max foi o primeiro dos pilotos da frente a visitar os boxes, no 27º giro. Cumprindo seus 20s de punição em um pit stop que durou 24s, retornou à pista em 15º, depois de trocar os pneus médios pelos duros. Norris, Sainz e Leclerc também pararam, respectivamente, nas voltas 31, 32 e 33. Com isso, as posições da ponta foram reestabelecidas, mas sem o holandês.
No entanto, as trocas de outros pilotos ajudaram a impulsionar o tricampeão na zona de pontuação: ele era nono e, na volta 41, já era sexto colocado. Seu avanço, porém, foi interrompido por Lewis Hamilton, que se preparava para brigar pelo quarto lugar com o colega George Russell.
Ao longo da prova, Sainz não chegou a abrir uma diferença tão expressiva sobre Leclerc. O espanhol até se queixou do que considerava um excesso de pressão da parte do colega. Mesmo assim, o monegasco não teve tempo para ensaiar uma aproximação maior do vizinho de garagem.
Na volta 63 de 71, o piloto do carro 16, que seguia sob pressão de Norris, escapou da pista na chegada à reta principal depois de travar a traseira e teve que frear para evitar uma batida. Com isso, abriu caminho para Norris assumir a vice-liderança da prova.
Enquanto a Ferrari dominava a prova e Verstappen brigava com Norris, a Mercedes viveu um duelo à parte com seus pilotos: Hamilton, quinto colocado, ficou na frente de Russell depois de superar o colega de equipe na largada, mas foi ultrapassado na 16ª volta.
O Red Bull Bragantino está perto de anunciar a contratação do técnico Fernando Seabra, demitido pelo Cruzeiro em setembro deste ano. O treinador chegaria ao Massa Bruta para substituir Pedro Caixinha, que teve a saída anunciada pelo Braga neste domingo, 27, após a derrota por 1 a 0 para o Botafogo.

Muniz, who is 38, recently made the jump from part-time racer to a full slate in the No. 33 Ford for Reaume Brothers Racing. He made two starts for Reaume Brothers this season in the Truck Series.
Muniz has said he is confident his team could be successful in this series, but Saturday's race was marred by mechanical issues for his Toyota. He qualified 31st out of 34 cars.
He competed twice this season in NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series, including the opener at Daytona International Speedway, and has also participated in the ARCA Series, one of the lower rungs on the NASCAR feeder system.
Muniz said Friday that his ultimate goal as a full-time driver is to win races.
“I want to be the best," he said, "but realistically, the series is tough. There are a lot of good drivers and a lot of good teams, but I think if we could consistently be in the top 20 that would be a huge achievement for us.”
The former actor has been a race enthusiast for decades. Muniz drove the pace car for the 2001 Daytona 500 — a race in which seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt was killed on the final lap.

A judge in Louisiana has temporarily blocked further efforts by state officials to clear homeless encampments in New Orleans — stalling a push that came ahead of three Taylor Swift concerts in the city this weekend.
The effort to relocate about 75 people living in tents beneath an overpass near the Superdome began in the days leading up to pop star's shows, which could draw 150,000 visitors to the stadium.
Judge Lori Jupiter granted a temporary restraining order on Friday, directing state law enforcement officials to not “destroy or dispose of the property of unhoused people without judicial process” and to notify people in the “state sanctioned camp” that they are “free to leave.”
The order is in effect until Nov. 4.
The judge's ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by homeless people who were subject to the sweep. In legal filings, they argued that state troopers violated their constitutional rights by illegally searching, seizing and destroying their property, disposing of their prized possessions and “forcibly herding” them away.
According to the lawsuit, a legal observer overheard state troopers saying “the governor wants you to move because of the Taylor Swift concert.”
State officials have said the residents were being moved to a new location about two blocks away, where unhoused people living in the tourist-heavy French Quarter neighborhood would also be moved.
A spokesperson for Gov. Jeff Landry has said that the effort was meant to address homelessness and safety issues, linking the push to the concerts and February’s Super Bowl, which will take place in the city.
“As we prepare for the city to host Taylor Swift and Super Bowl LIX, we are committed to ensuring New Orleans puts its best foot forward when on the world stage,” Landry’s communications director, Kate Kelly, said in a statement issued to local media.
Advocates argue the effort disrupted the work of local officials to connect homeless people with social services and help them find more permanent housing solutions.
Martha Kegel, executive director of Unity of Greater New Orleans, a nonprofit that seeks permanent housing for unsheltered people, said the sweep was a needless and harmful endeavor and that many of those in the camp have mental illnesses and are distrustful of authorities and those trying to help them.
“Some people were frightened and left, and that’s not good,” she said. “Because then all the work that we did to assess them and document their disabilities and, you know, work with them on their housing plan has now been wasted.”
Among those who made the move Wednesday was Terrence Cobbins. Taking a break from gathering his belongings, he said he was told to move because of the concerts.
“They ain’t never did it before for other people,” he said. “Why Taylor Swift?”

CLEVELAND -- Jim Donovan, the beloved radio play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Browns and a TV sports fixture for more than four decades, died Saturday. He was 68.
Donovan retired from his broadcast career earlier this year and stepped away from his game-day duties with the team before this season while battling cancer. He had called Cleveland's games since the team's expansion rebirth in 1999.
"This is an incredibly difficult day for us and the entire Cleveland Browns organization,” Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said. “His impact as the Voice of the Browns for 25 years is immeasurable as he touched the lives of our fans each and every Sunday with his love for the Browns and his brilliance at his craft.
“He will be greatly missed, but he cemented a legacy that will live on forever. The only thing that outweighed his love for this city and this team was the love he had for his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Meghan, and everyone who was fortunate enough to call Jimmy family or friend.”
A Boston native known to everyone as “Jimmy,” Donovan endeared himself to Cleveland fans with his passion, sense of humor and professionalism. He was a stickler for detail, spending countless hours preparing for game broadcasts.
Donovan had recently been inducted into the Browns' Legends Club and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. He had been too ill to attend the events.
Even in some lean, losing years for the Browns, Donovan managed to find moments to celebrate.
“He kept it real, but he kept a positive tone to it,” said former Browns kicker Phil Dawson, who inducted Donovan into the Legends Club. ”He just always could find that balance — authentic, real, accurate, but he was still supportive, even when there wasn’t a whole lot to support.
"And I know the players appreciated that. I know I certainly appreciated that. He was always quick to try to provide context, rather than letting people just focus on an individual moment. He just really had a knack for seeing the big picture. It was always ‘Go Browns,’ yet he kept it real and accurate, so that everybody understood what was going on.”
When he was forced to step down in August, Donovan wrote a letter to Browns fans expressing his gratitude for their support.
“I have called Browns games for 25 years. Not a day has gone by when I haven’t paused and been so proud to be ‘The Voice of the Browns,’” he wrote. “Cheryl, Meghan and I thank you for all the love, support and prayers during my rough patches. It’s like having a huge family around us. And that’s what makes the Cleveland Browns so special. You do.”
Donovan had to step away as sports director at WKYC-TV last fall for several months to undergo treatment for leukemia. He returned to the broadcast booth in time to call the team's late-season run to the playoffs.
He had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2000 and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011.
A graduate of Boston University, Donovan got to Cleveland in 1985. Along with doing local reporting of the city's three professional sports franchises, Donovan also had several national network assignments and was part of NBC's coverage team at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.
LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — George Smiley, the subtle fictional spymaster navigating treacherous Cold War currents, is back.
And so, somewhat surprisingly, is his creator, John le Carré.
Four years after the spy writer’s death at the age of 89, comes a new thriller, “Karla’s Choice.” Billed as “a John le Carré novel,” it was written by Nick Harkaway, whose qualifications for the job include seven published novels, a lifetime of reading le Carré — and the fact he is the late author’s son.
After decades avoiding his famous father’s shadow, like Smiley trying to leave the intelligence agency known as the Circus, he was drawn back in.
Le Carré left a note asking his family, as custodians of his estate, to help his works live on and find new readers. They took that as permission to write new books. But Harkaway, who made his name with sci-fi thrillers including “The Gone-Away World,” “Angelmaker” and “Titanium Noir,” was apprehensive about being the one to do it.
“I would go so far as to say terrified,” said 51-year-old Harkaway, whose real name is Nicholas Cornwell. Le Carré was the pen name of his father, David Cornwell.
“It’s this piece of 20th-century literature that defines a genre and potentially a historical period. This body of work is immense. And it’s my father’s universe,” he said. “There’s every reason for people to be skeptical.”
Sitting in his spacious north London home — in the “very uncomfortable” writing chair that once belonged to his father – Harkaway has relaxed a bit now that the book has been published (by Viking) to largely glowing reviews. The Daily Telegraph said Harkaway’s “recreation of the Smiley milieu is note-perfect,” while The Guardian declared the novel “a treat.”
“Karla’s Choice” is set in 1963, months after the end of le Carré’s breakthrough novel, “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.” It opens with a hitman, dispatched by Moscow to assassinate a Hungarian publisher in London, having a last-minute crisis of conscience.
A recently retired Smiley is pulled in for one last job. He’s assured it will be short and simple. Famous last words.
The peril-filled saga that follows fleshes out the early relationship between Smiley and the Soviet spymaster Karla, who becomes his nemesis in later works like “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “Smiley’s People.”
Harkaway says that once he got over his terror, capturing Smiley’s voice came easily — he had literally grown up with it. Some of his earliest memories involve his father reading aloud draft pages of his works in progress.
“The formative moment in my life where I was actually learning to speak, was learning to use language, I was getting 90 minutes or more of George Smiley in my ear every day,” he said. “And so when I came to sit down to do this, I found that I did not have to turn the dial very far to find a voice that is absolutely my own, but which reads to people as being sufficiently of the le Carré mood.”
That mood is often dark. Le Carré had been a real-life Cold War intelligence agent, and his thrillers are steeped in the moral murk of the spy world. But bespectacled, understated Smiley – antithesis of that other famous fictional spy, James Bond — offers decency and hope.
Harkaway sees Smiley as “this compassionate, anonymous little everyman who can turn up and see the broken pieces of life on the floor and put them back together.”
There is a bit more humor in “Karla’s Choice” than in many of his father’s books, and female characters, including Smiley's wife Ann, get more space and voice.
He acknowledges that women were often on the sidelines in his father’s work — a reflection of the male-dominated era, and of a complicated life. David Cornwell’s mother left when he was 5 years old, leaving him with his father, a charismatic conman. He didn’t see her again until he was 21. As an adult he had two long marriages — the second to Harkaway’s mother, Valerie Jane Eustace — and multiple affairs.
“On a fundamental level for him, his relationships with women were about absence and pain,” Harkaway said. “That got better over time. But when he was writing Smiley, that’s what came through. And that’s not my life.”
Harkaway says working on the book didn’t bring “an Obi Wan Kenobi moment” in which an apparition of his father appeared to offer writing advice. But he found the experience “very moving.”
“Despite the fact that it’s … slightly a project that has grief attached to it, it’s still a joyful process,” he said.
It seems inevitable that more le Carré thrillers will follow. Harkaway also plans to continue writing under his own name and in his own style, with a sequel to “Titanium Noir” due to be published in April.
“Karla’s Choice” carries a double dedication: To David John Moore Cornwell, “father, husband, brother, son,” and to “John le Carré, novelist.”
“John le Carré was, among other things, a shield that my father created, because he was quite a shy guy,” Harkaway said. “John le Carré was kind of the suit that he put on to be able to do it all. And then David Cornwell was my dad. He was a terrible cook, he was a ping pong player of enormous aggression and flair … he was the person I lived with.

Hundreds of thousands of members of South Korea's Christian groups held a service in Seoul on Sunday to protest against a landmark court ruling that acknowledged the rights of partners in same-sex couples to receive state health insurance.
The supreme court in July upheld a high court ruling that a same-sex partner was eligible for spousal benefits from the National Health Insurance Service, a move hailed as a win for LGBTQ rights in a country that has lagged others in the region.
Sunday's massive service drew hundreds of thousands of Christians from across the country, disrupting traffic on several major roads in central Seoul.
As many as 230,000 people attended, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing police, The organizers, meanwhile, said as many as 1.1 million people took part. Calls to the Seoul metropolitan police agency were not answered.
Kim Jeong-hee, a spokesperson for the organizing committee, said the verdict was unconstitutional because same-sex marriage has not been legalized.
"I think that would only be the starting point for same-sex marriage legalization policy," Kim said. "We see this not simply as a Christian issue, but as a huge crisis that shakes our country's foundation."
The court had said that with no clauses in the national health insurance act that refer to same-sex union, denial of benefits to such people constitutes discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Some participants held signs saying "oppose the anti-discrimination law" and "protect our children from gender pollution, gender confusion and gender division destruction."
A coalition of hundreds of LGBTQ activists and Catholic and Anglican organizations issued a statement criticizing the joint service as an act that denies the values of inclusiveness, diversity and respect for human rights and an attempt to infringe on the minority's human rights in the name of the majority.

Emboscada de palmeirenses contra cruzeirenses deixa um morto e outros 20 feridos, diz polícia
Uma briga entre cerca de 150 torcedores de organizadas do Palmeiras e do Cruzeiro, com pedaços de madeira e fogo, deixou uma pessoa morta e outras 20 feridas na madrugada deste domingo em Mairiporã, informou a Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF).

Todas as vítimas são cruzeirenses, de acordo com a polícia, e ao menos dois ônibus da torcida do time mineiro foram atingidos. Um deles foi incendiado e continua no local, fora da rodovia, enquanto o outro teve os vidros quebrados e está na base da PRF aguardando remoção.
As vítimas foram socorridas por ambulâncias e encaminhadas para o Pronto Socorro: 18 foram para o hospital Anjo Gabriel em Mairiporã, e três para o hospital de Franco da Rocha.
O homem que morreu tinha 30 anos de idade, sofreu ferimentos graves e foi encaminhado para o hospital, mas faleceu após receber atendimento. Um dos feridos sofreu um ferimento de arma de fogo no abdômen, mas não corre perigo de vida.
Ainda segundo a Polícia Rodoviária Federal, a emboscada ocorreu por volta das 5h20, no km 65 da via, sentido Belo Horizonte. Informações iniciais dos policiais dão conta de que ônibus com os torcedores rivais se cruzaram, pararam na via e iniciaram o tumulto.
A Secretaria de Segurança Pública, procurada pelo ge, informou que a Polícia Civil investiga a briga e que, de acordo com informações preliminares, torcedores do Cruzeiro sofreram uma emboscada de torcedores organizados do Palmeiras.
O boletim de ocorrência está em elaboração pela Delegacia de Mairiporã, que requisitou perícia ao local. O delegado Ortiza, de Mairiporã, disse que os policiais da ocorrência vão ser ouvidos e que pelo menos 60 torcedores do Cruzeiro vão prestar depoimento.
A Polícia Militar (PM) foi acionada por testemunhas para ir ao local atender a ocorrência. O Corpo de Bombeiros também foi mobilizado e apagou as chamas do ônibus. As autoridades não informaram ainda qual torcida viajava no veículo. Ainda não há informações se entre os feridos tem alguém que se queimou.
Segundo a PRF, os palmeirenses tinham acompanhado o empate por 2 a 2 entre o Palmeiras e o Fortaleza, no sábado na capital paulista. Os cruzeirenses, de acordo com os policiais, retornavam de Curitiba, no Paraná, onde o Cruzeiro perdeu por 3 a 0 para o Athletico no Brasileiro.
O Cruzeiro, no fim desta manhã, se posicionou lamentando o ocorrido.
A Arteris Fernão Dias, concessionária responsável pelo trecho, foi procurada pela TV Globo para comentar o assunto.
A Polícia Civil vai investigar quem causou o confronto para depois responsabilizar os envolvidos diretamente na morte e nos ferimentos dos torcedores. Até a última atualização desta reportagem, não havia confirmação se algum suspeito pela briga foi detido.
O g1 também tenta identificar quais são as torcidas organizadas dos clubes de futebol envolvidas no confronto. Elas estão sendo procuradas para se posicionarem sobre o caso.
Organizadas de Palmeiras e Cruzeiro tem um histórico de conflito, desde 1988, entre a Mancha Verde e a Máfia Azul, quando um dos fundadores da Mancha, Cléo Sóstenes Dantas da Silva, foi assassinado baleado com dois tiros.
Na partida seguinte ao ocorrido, disputada contra o Cruzeiro, a Mancha fez homenagens a Cléo, mas que terminou interrompida por cânticos de insulto da Máfia Azul em referência ao fundador - resultando em uma briga no setor destinado à torcida visitante.
Desde então, as organizadas guardaram um histórico de brigas, aliando-se, inclusive, às respectivas torcidas de seus rivais - a Mancha com a Galoucura, do Atlético-MG, e a Máfia Azul com a Independente, do São Paulo.
No retrospecto mais recente, em setembro de 2022, membros das organizadas Mancha Verde e Máfia Azul entraram em confronto no interior de Minas Gerais, na rodovia Fernão Dias.
Na época quatro torcedores com idades entre 26 e 33 anos foram baleados e 10, com idades entre 30 e 50 anos, foram feridos a chutes, socos e pauladas.

Fresh off a season in which he surpassed Roger Maris’ 61-year-old AL record for home runs in a single season, Judge flew from Tampa, Fla., to San Diego on Dec. 6 to make his call. Obviamente é preciso contextualizar esse número: na derrota por 2 a 0 para o Fluminense, o Flamengo jogou sem o seu meio de campo inteiro titular e chegou a fazer um bom primeiro tempo; já no 0 a 0 com o Corinthians na Copa do Brasil, atuou 75% do tempo com um jogador a menos e foi forçado a se defender para segurar a vantagem da partida de ida.
Mas voltemos ao Juventude. Na tarde do último sábado no Maracanã, Filipe Luís optou por Evertton Araújo na vaga do lesionado De la Cruz e por Michael no lugar do suspenso Bruno Henrique. A escolha no ataque era esperada, mas no meio de campo o técnico surpreendeu. Muitos torcedores esperavam ver o recém-contratado Alcaraz como segundo volante, até prevendo a retranca alviverde.
A opção por Evertton Araújo deixou o time com dois primeiros volantes em campo, mas sem ficar torto. Não teve um mais fixo e outro mais solto: ele e Pulgar jogaram em linha, subindo o bloco e voltando juntos. O jovem, de 21 anos, fez uma partida simples e segura. E ainda apareceu na frente em boa finalização de fora da área. Filipe Luís justificou a escolha como plano de jogo, porém, contra um oponente que atacaria pouco, faz mais sentido o teste pensando no Atlético-MG daqui a uma semana.
Para Michael, foi importante recuperar ritmo e confiança depois da lesão na coxa direita que o tirou de combate por pouco mais de um mês. Ele vinha entrando poucos minutos nos últimos jogos, mas contra o Juventude voltou a ser titular e a fazer um gol depois de aproximadamente dois meses. E ainda construiu a jogada do terceiro, marcado por Arrascaeta.
No quinto jogo sob o comando de Filipe Luís, o Flamengo apresentou o seu maior volume ofensivo até aqui. O técnico até falou na entrevista coletiva pós-jogo que não é fácil atacar uma linha de cinco (defensores), mas com Gerson e Arrascaeta inspirados, e com muita movimentação, o Rubro-Negro não teve tanta dificuldade assim. Foram 20 finalizações contra apenas quatro do Juventude e 11 grandes chances de gol.
Logo aos sete minutos, Gabigol deixou Arrascaeta na cara do gol, e ele soltou uma bomba para defesaça de Gabriel. No rebote, Michael não desperdiçou a segunda oportunidade. O próprio Robozinho teve mais uma chance aos 25, após receber do camisa 99 na área e chutar em cima do goleiro.
Foi só na etapa final que a porteira abriu. Logo aos três minutos, Gabigol converteu o pênalti polêmico marcado. E aos oito, Arrascaeta fez o terceiro gol com muita liberdade na entrada da área. O uruguaio depois retribuiu o passe de Gerson, aos 19, mas o meia mesmo com ângulo chutou de bico, em cima do goleiro (veja na imagem abaixo).
Depois disso, o Flamengo só voltou a assustar nos minutos finais, após a expulsão de Nenê. Aos 46, Arrascaeta recebeu de Plata na área e finalizou por cima do travessão. Três minutos depois, o equatoriano aproveitou passe de Gerson e desencantou com a camisa rubro-negra. E aos 52, o uruguaio chutou na rede pelo lado de fora.
Apesar do domínio absoluto no jogo, com 66% de posse de bola, o Flamengo tomou sustos contra um Juventude que teve 100% de eficiência e aproveitou as duas únicas chances de gol que teve. A forma como Filipe Luís gosta de atacar, com bastante gente, deixa o time vulnerável a contra-ataques. Foi assim que saiu o lançamento de João Lucas para Gilberto, nas costas de Léo Pereira, invadir a área e fuzilar Rossi. E o segundo gol foi num erro individual do goleiro argentino.
O placar de 4 a 2 pode enganar, mas o Juventude foi para o intervalo com 1 a 1. Coincidentemente, um gol sofrido em mais um buraco do lado esquerdo da defesa, que tem Ayrton Lucas em má fase (já havia acontecido isso nos dois gols do Fluminense). Os gaúchos voltaram a assustar ao diminuir o placar para 3 a 2 aos 24 minutos do segundo tempo. Mas a expulsão de Nenê na sequência e o gol de Plata no fim impediram qualquer sinal de reação.
Com 54 pontos, o Flamengo segue em quarto lugar a 10 pontos do líder Botafogo. Como o Brasileirão continua muito difícil de buscar, a prioridade do clube sem dúvidas é a Copa do Brasil. E o Rubro-Negro tem um último desafio antes da decisão contra o Atlético-MG: na quarta-feira, ele faz o jogo atrasado contra o Inter, às 19h (de Brasília) no Beira-Rio. Para enfrentar o Fortaleza, terceiro colocado no Brasileiro, Abel precisou fazer duas mudanças em sua escalação ideal, porque Marcos Rocha e Aníbal Moreno estavam suspensos pelo terceiro cartão amarelo.
Na ausência da dupla, promoveu as trocas esperadas, com Mayke na lateral e Zé Rafael no meio de campo. Ambos, contudo, tiveram mau desempenho, acumulando erros de passe, deixando espaços e cometendo falhas na marcação. Verstappen seguiu roda com roda ao lado de Sainz nos primeiros metros e conseguiu contornar a primeira curva à frente do ferrarista. Logo atrás, Norris manteve-se em terceiro lugar, assim como Leclerc, na quarta colocação.
A corrida foi interrompida ainda na primeira volta com uma bandeira amarela, devido a um incidente envolvendo Alexander Albon e Yuki Tsunoda; os dois haviam largado próximos um ao outro, respectivamente em nono e 11º lugar.
O piloto da RB tentou ultrapassar por fora e tocou na roda do rival, perdendo a direção, rodando e deslizando em direção contrária ao sentido da pista até a barreira de proteção no fim da curva. O japonês ainda perdeu uma roda durante a batida, que danificou a Williams do rival e o forçou a parar na grama, em outro trecho da pista.
Pérez largou bem, beneficiando-se também dos incidentes que tiraram dois carros de sua frente, e foi de 18º a .13º No entanto, acabou punido em 5s por queimar a largada - embora estivesse, na realidade, posicionado de forma incorreta em seu colchete, o que afeta o sistema de detecção automática.
A bandeira verde reautorizou a disputa na sétima volta, permitindo que Sainz se aproximasse de Verstappen mas, ainda, sem poder usar a asa traseira móvel. Dois giros depois o espanhol assumiu a liderança com facilidade na reta principal.
Pelo rádio, o piloto da RBR se queixou de uma bateria sem potência em seu carro; logo em seguida, iniciaria uma série de movimentos polêmicos na prova, a partir da volta 16.
Primeiro, Max impediu que Norris o ultrapassasse ao empurrar o britânico para fora da pista quando o piloto da McLaren já havia colocado parte do carro à sua frente, na curva 4. Lando teve que cortar caminho pelo gramado e por isso, foi facilmente superado pelo rival na curva 8.
Para completar, o tricampeão ainda bateu na roda dianteira esquerda do rival, fazendo com que ambos mais uma vez saíssem da pista. Repetindo o feito do GP dos EUA, Leclerc aproveitou a briga da dupla e passou ambos, saltando do quarto para o segundo lugar. Pelos dois episódios, Max recebeu 20s de punição.
Max foi o primeiro dos pilotos da frente a visitar os boxes, no 27º giro. Cumprindo seus 20s de punição em um pit stop que durou 24s, retornou à pista em 15º, depois de trocar os pneus médios pelos duros. Norris, Sainz e Leclerc também pararam, respectivamente, nas voltas 31, 32 e 33. Com isso, as posições da ponta foram reestabelecidas, mas sem o holandês.
No entanto, as trocas de outros pilotos ajudaram a impulsionar o tricampeão na zona de pontuação: ele era nono e, na volta 41, já era sexto colocado. Seu avanço, porém, foi interrompido por Lewis Hamilton, que se preparava para brigar pelo quarto lugar com o colega George Russell.
Ao longo da prova, Sainz não chegou a abrir uma diferença tão expressiva sobre Leclerc. O espanhol até se queixou do que considerava um excesso de pressão da parte do colega. Mesmo assim, o monegasco não teve tempo para ensaiar uma aproximação maior do vizinho de garagem.
Na volta 63 de 71, o piloto do carro 16, que seguia sob pressão de Norris, escapou da pista na chegada à reta principal depois de travar a traseira e teve que frear para evitar uma batida. Com isso, abriu caminho para Norris assumir a vice-liderança da prova.
Enquanto a Ferrari dominava a prova e Verstappen brigava com Norris, a Mercedes viveu um duelo à parte com seus pilotos: Hamilton, quinto colocado, ficou na frente de Russell depois de superar o colega de equipe na largada, mas foi ultrapassado na 16ª volta.

Muniz, who is 38, recently made the jump from part-time racer to a full slate in the No. 33 Ford for Reaume Brothers Racing. He made two starts for Reaume Brothers this season in the Truck Series.
Muniz has said he is confident his team could be successful in this series, but Saturday's race was marred by mechanical issues for his Toyota. He qualified 31st out of 34 cars.
He competed twice this season in NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series, including the opener at Daytona International Speedway, and has also participated in the ARCA Series, one of the lower rungs on the NASCAR feeder system.
Muniz said Friday that his ultimate goal as a full-time driver is to win races.
“I want to be the best," he said, "but realistically, the series is tough. There are a lot of good drivers and a lot of good teams, but I think if we could consistently be in the top 20 that would be a huge achievement for us.”
The former actor has been a race enthusiast for decades. Muniz drove the pace car for the 2001 Daytona 500 — a race in which seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt was killed on the final lap.
Trump refers to CNN's Anderson Cooper by a woman's first name
NOVI, Mich. -- Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper with a woman's first name in recent days as the Republican presidential nominee focuses his closing message on a hypermasculine appeal to men.
On a Friday morning post on Trump’s social media site Truth Social, the former president referred to one of the most prominent openly gay journalists in the U.S. as "Allison Cooper.”
Trump made the subtext even more explicit later Friday during a rally in Traverse City, Michigan, where he criticized a town hall Cooper hosted with Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If you watched her being interviewed by Allison Cooper the other night, he’s a nice person. You know Allison Cooper? CNN fake news,” Trump said, before pausing and saying in a mocking voice: “Oh, she said no, his name is Anderson. Oh, no."
On Saturday, Trump repeated the name during another Michigan rally, then followed it up during a nighttime reference in Pennsylvania. “They had a town hall,” Trump said in Michigan. “Even Allison Cooper was embarrassed by it. He was embarrassed by it.”
In referring to Cooper with a woman’s name, Trump appeared to turn to a stereotype heterosexual people have long deployed against gay men. Such rhetoric evokes the trope of gay men as effeminate and comes as Trump aims to drive up his appeal among men in the final stages of his bid to return to the White House.
The former president on Friday recorded a three-hour interview with Joe Rogan, a former mixed martial arts commentator whose podcast is wildly popular among young men. On Oct. 19, Trump kicked off a Pennsylvania rally discussing legendary golfer Arnold Palmer’s genitalia.
The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. A representative for Cooper declined to comment.
Judge blocks further sweeps of homeless camp in New Orleans ahead of Taylor Swift concerts
A judge in Louisiana has temporarily blocked further efforts by state officials to clear homeless encampments in New Orleans — stalling a push that came ahead of three Taylor Swift concerts in the city this weekend.
The effort to relocate about 75 people living in tents beneath an overpass near the Superdome began in the days leading up to pop star's shows, which could draw 150,000 visitors to the stadium.

Judge Lori Jupiter granted a temporary restraining order on Friday, directing state law enforcement officials to not “destroy or dispose of the property of unhoused people without judicial process” and to notify people in the “state sanctioned camp” that they are “free to leave.”
The order is in effect until Nov. 4.
The judge's ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by homeless people who were subject to the sweep. In legal filings, they argued that state troopers violated their constitutional rights by illegally searching, seizing and destroying their property, disposing of their prized possessions and “forcibly herding” them away.
According to the lawsuit, a legal observer overheard state troopers saying “the governor wants you to move because of the Taylor Swift concert.”
State officials have said the residents were being moved to a new location about two blocks away, where unhoused people living in the tourist-heavy French Quarter neighborhood would also be moved.
A spokesperson for Gov. Jeff Landry has said that the effort was meant to address homelessness and safety issues, linking the push to the concerts and February’s Super Bowl, which will take place in the city.
“As we prepare for the city to host Taylor Swift and Super Bowl LIX, we are committed to ensuring New Orleans puts its best foot forward when on the world stage,” Landry’s communications director, Kate Kelly, said in a statement issued to local media.
Advocates argue the effort disrupted the work of local officials to connect homeless people with social services and help them find more permanent housing solutions.
Martha Kegel, executive director of Unity of Greater New Orleans, a nonprofit that seeks permanent housing for unsheltered people, said the sweep was a needless and harmful endeavor and that many of those in the camp have mental illnesses and are distrustful of authorities and those trying to help them.
“Some people were frightened and left, and that’s not good,” she said. “Because then all the work that we did to assess them and document their disabilities and, you know, work with them on their housing plan has now been wasted.”
Among those who made the move Wednesday was Terrence Cobbins. Taking a break from gathering his belongings, he said he was told to move because of the concerts.
“They ain’t never did it before for other people,” he said. “Why Taylor Swift?”

Jim Donovan, Cleveland Browns play-by-play announcer and TV sports anchor, dies of cancer at 68
CLEVELAND -- Jim Donovan, the beloved radio play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Browns and a TV sports fixture for more than four decades, died Saturday. He was 68.
Donovan retired from his broadcast career earlier this year and stepped away from his game-day duties with the team before this season while battling cancer. He had called Cleveland's games since the team's expansion rebirth in 1999.

“He kept it real, but he kept a positive tone to it,” said former Browns kicker Phil Dawson, who inducted Donovan into the Legends Club. ”He just always could find that balance — authentic, real, accurate, but he was still supportive, even when there wasn’t a whole lot to support.
"And I know the players appreciated that. I know I certainly appreciated that. He was always quick to try to provide context, rather than letting people just focus on an individual moment. He just really had a knack for seeing the big picture. It was always ‘Go Browns,’ yet he kept it real and accurate, so that everybody understood what was going on.”
When he was forced to step down in August, Donovan wrote a letter to Browns fans expressing his gratitude for their support.
“I have called Browns games for 25 years. Not a day has gone by when I haven’t paused and been so proud to be ‘The Voice of the Browns,’” he wrote. “Cheryl, Meghan and I thank you for all the love, support and prayers during my rough patches. It’s like having a huge family around us. And that’s what makes the Cleveland Browns so special. You do.”
Donovan had to step away as sports director at WKYC-TV last fall for several months to undergo treatment for leukemia. He returned to the broadcast booth in time to call the team's late-season run to the playoffs.
He had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2000 and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011.
A graduate of Boston University, Donovan got to Cleveland in 1985. Along with doing local reporting of the city's three professional sports franchises, Donovan also had several national network assignments and was part of NBC's coverage team at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.

LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — George Smiley, the subtle fictional spymaster navigating treacherous Cold War currents, is back.
And so, somewhat surprisingly, is his creator, John le Carré.
Four years after the spy writer’s death at the age of 89, comes a new thriller, “Karla’s Choice.” Billed as “a John le Carré novel,” it was written by Nick Harkaway, whose qualifications for the job include seven published novels, a lifetime of reading le Carré — and the fact he is the late author’s son.

After decades avoiding his famous father’s shadow, like Smiley trying to leave the intelligence agency known as the Circus, he was drawn back in.
Le Carré left a note asking his family, as custodians of his estate, to help his works live on and find new readers. They took that as permission to write new books. But Harkaway, who made his name with sci-fi thrillers including “The Gone-Away World,” “Angelmaker” and “Titanium Noir,” was apprehensive about being the one to do it.
“I would go so far as to say terrified,” said 51-year-old Harkaway, whose real name is Nicholas Cornwell. Le Carré was the pen name of his father, David Cornwell.
“It’s this piece of 20th-century literature that defines a genre and potentially a historical period. This body of work is immense. And it’s my father’s universe,” he said. “There’s every reason for people to be skeptical.”
Sitting in his spacious north London home — in the “very uncomfortable” writing chair that once belonged to his father – Harkaway has relaxed a bit now that the book has been published (by Viking) to largely glowing reviews. The Daily Telegraph said Harkaway’s “recreation of the Smiley milieu is note-perfect,” while The Guardian declared the novel “a treat.”
“Karla’s Choice” is set in 1963, months after the end of le Carré’s breakthrough novel, “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.” It opens with a hitman, dispatched by Moscow to assassinate a Hungarian publisher in London, having a last-minute crisis of conscience.
A recently retired Smiley is pulled in for one last job. He’s assured it will be short and simple. Famous last words.
The peril-filled saga that follows fleshes out the early relationship between Smiley and the Soviet spymaster Karla, who becomes his nemesis in later works like “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “Smiley’s People.”
Harkaway says that once he got over his terror, capturing Smiley’s voice came easily — he had literally grown up with it. Some of his earliest memories involve his father reading aloud draft pages of his works in progress.
“The formative moment in my life where I was actually learning to speak, was learning to use language, I was getting 90 minutes or more of George Smiley in my ear every day,” he said. “And so when I came to sit down to do this, I found that I did not have to turn the dial very far to find a voice that is absolutely my own, but which reads to people as being sufficiently of the le Carré mood.”
That mood is often dark. Le Carré had been a real-life Cold War intelligence agent, and his thrillers are steeped in the moral murk of the spy world. But bespectacled, understated Smiley – antithesis of that other famous fictional spy, James Bond — offers decency and hope.
Harkaway sees Smiley as “this compassionate, anonymous little everyman who can turn up and see the broken pieces of life on the floor and put them back together.”
There is a bit more humor in “Karla’s Choice” than in many of his father’s books, and female characters, including Smiley's wife Ann, get more space and voice.
He acknowledges that women were often on the sidelines in his father’s work — a reflection of the male-dominated era, and of a complicated life. David Cornwell’s mother left when he was 5 years old, leaving him with his father, a charismatic conman. He didn’t see her again until he was 21. As an adult he had two long marriages — the second to Harkaway’s mother, Valerie Jane Eustace — and multiple affairs.
“On a fundamental level for him, his relationships with women were about absence and pain,” Harkaway said. “That got better over time. But when he was writing Smiley, that’s what came through. And that’s not my life.”
Harkaway says working on the book didn’t bring “an Obi Wan Kenobi moment” in which an apparition of his father appeared to offer writing advice. But he found the experience “very moving.”
“Despite the fact that it’s … slightly a project that has grief attached to it, it’s still a joyful process,” he said.
It seems inevitable that more le Carré thrillers will follow. Harkaway also plans to continue writing under his own name and in his own style, with a sequel to “Titanium Noir” due to be published in April.
“Karla’s Choice” carries a double dedication: To David John Moore Cornwell, “father, husband, brother, son,” and to “John le Carré, novelist.”
“John le Carré was, among other things, a shield that my father created, because he was quite a shy guy,” Harkaway said. “John le Carré was kind of the suit that he put on to be able to do it all. And then David Cornwell was my dad. He was a terrible cook, he was a ping pong player of enormous aggression and flair … he was the person I lived with.
“I wanted with that dedication to thank them both. And also just to remind everybody, he was an awful lot of things to a lot of people.”

South Korean Christian Groups in Massive Protest Against Rights for Same-sex Couples
Hundreds of thousands of members of South Korea's Christian groups held a service in Seoul on Sunday to protest against a landmark court ruling that acknowledged the rights of partners in same-sex couples to receive state health insurance.
The supreme court in July upheld a high court ruling that a same-sex partner was eligible for spousal benefits from the National Health Insurance Service, a move hailed as a win for LGBTQ rights in a country that has lagged others in the region.
Sunday's massive service drew hundreds of thousands of Christians from across the country, disrupting traffic on several major roads in central Seoul.
As many as 230,000 people attended, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing police, The organizers, meanwhile, said as many as 1.1 million people took part. Calls to the Seoul metropolitan police agency were not answered.
Kim Jeong-hee, a spokesperson for the organizing committee, said the verdict was unconstitutional because same-sex marriage has not been legalized.
"I think that would only be the starting point for same-sex marriage legalization policy," Kim said. "We see this not simply as a Christian issue, but as a huge crisis that shakes our country's foundation."
The court had said that with no clauses in the national health insurance act that refer to same-sex union, denial of benefits to such people constitutes discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The truth is, no one can time set and no one can tell you the end of the world will happen at this date because...

For the love of everything that is good...Stop setting times. Our jobs as Christians is to be ready no matter when the time is, that's it. Not to look foolish on social media thinking we understand propehcy when it's obvious we don't.
Here's the biblical proof, no one that calls themselves a student of the bible, should ever 'set times and dates' for the end of the world.
