Splinterlands Quidditch [Best Bets of Splinterlands] - Good Value In Reward Cards!

in LeoFinance4 years ago

The final Splinterlands Quidditch from @bdcommunity invited us to reflect on the best Splinterlands card purchase/ trade/ burn we made.

I don't really have a 'killer' purchase as I'm not generally one to buy big in one go, I tend to peruse the market every now and then and 'snipe' particular cards I think look good value.

I've been doing this for more than a year now, mostly to level up certain cards that have the best win rates, and thus the most utility, using @darthgexe's excellent stats tool.

In the last few months I've managed to max out several cards and taken several others to their optimal level, and with certain of these cards I've been deliberately snapping up a few to hold as investments, based mainly on a combination of how often they're used and and how much they win.

Here are two of my best-gain purchases with roughly how much they've gained since I started stacking them. I decided to go with two rather than one as I don't really have a compelling story!

NB - they're both rewards cards, which I started buying when I noticed their print run was at about 70% of the way through.

The Fallen Specter

I got into this card because of Mimosa, he's the perfect fit with his low mana, and TBH he's useless without her, because you need that universal Void otherwise he just dies with reflect!

It was mainly thanks to this card, along with Mimosa herself, who got me into playing the Death Splinter - I find winning by hexing to be great fun!

I maxed mine out a while ago, and then bought enough cards to make another maxed one - so 22 BCX in all. I haven't combined the other 11 yet, mainly because my Level 3 is on loan to @slobberchops, whose hopefully making good use of it!

I bought in at around $1 a card, so that's a $22 investment, now worth $64 - so that's almost 200% up, I'll take that!

The Chicken

A second great investment was buying up a few Furious Chickens when they were selling for $0.02 to $0.03 - I think these were regarded as a bit of a joke until low mana battles became much more common, when they suddenly became essential.

I took one up to Level 5, the one I use, and then bought another 79 at those low prices, just every now and again with DEC winnings, and now they're selling for $0.08 and, just like with the Fallen Specter, they're out of print and I've seen those cards almost quadruple in value, even if from a low starting point.

And let's face it, sometimes a good Chicken Difference can really sort you out!

I also bought up enough gold cards to make up an L5 chicken, it's probably the most commonly played card after all!

I think these have almost doubled in price since I bought them.

Final Thoughts

It's as much fun to invest as it is to play Splinterlands, and I enjoy purchasing the odd cheap card that I think will increase in value, it's all part of the game!

The risk in holding cards is that you don't know what's around the corner.... what new cards are going to perform a similar function to already existing cards, but at a lower mana cost?

So as with all investments, there is a risk!

Sort:

The chicken is an essential to absorb some fire. I had one battle where it ended up as the last card left and then it took out the opponent's last one! That was lucky.

I use the spectre if I have a couple of mana left to use. Sometimes that pays off. No idea if my cards have gained value.

Ahh, it's the finest way to win.... with the Chicken!

I'm sure the price of the cards has at least doubled on average since we started playing, at least!

I keep forgetting to use that Spector, not sure why.. its in some dead part of my brain or something. I'm about to do my DQ's, and so will be sure to use it soon.

Chickens are great, though I prefer them at Lvl1.

I bet it feels so good to see that the risk you took is paying off

Oh I'm down on some other cards!

Overall I think I'm up though, I should have tracked the value a bit more carefully!

Kinda difficult to track card values for me. Most times, I just go to peakmonsters to see the total value if my cards. Other than that, I don't know if any other way

That's all I use, or I rely on the odd post I wrote in the past where I mention the prices!

Oh we I guess it is the same thing for me. I also noticed that the price fluctuates regularly when there's a new card around. Deepswimmer price has been going up and down, thus affecting my total value.

It's true, every investment has its risk, but when it comes to Splinterlands we can still have fun with it.

Choosing some cards with long-term goals, I believe it will be a good strategy especially when the new expansion comes or the possibility of being able to play via mobile.

Well said!

Can people still not play on mobile?!

I thought that had been solved!

Sorry, maybe I got it wrong and English is not my forte :)

I just mentioned that the game is not available on the Play Store as an app yet. I can play on my cell phone through the browser, but not in an app.

Great buys, I like the fallen specter (conbined with the corrupted Pegasus to give it 1 more health or in matches where all health is max) nice to see it jumped in price a lot, didn't realize it was because of the Mimosa (those summoners are too expensive for me :) ) I was also watching it when it was nearly fully printed to get some around 1$ but ended up skipping.

For as far as the chicken goes, I got a bunch of the golden ones stacked up as it's the most essential gold card which will pay back it's price in extra DEC (if you play long enough). I never bothered to level up my regular chickens (I have around 100 of those, most of them leased out to affiliates). I guess the game rule where monsters get more health made it worth getting that one to Level 5 with the enrage ability.

Great post by the way, I might make one with my own buys that worked out great.

You should make a post - do it before Friday, under the contest by the @bdcommunity - there's some great prizes, and even if you don't win you might well get a nice upvote - they've got a lot of stake!

I bought Mimosas at $10! Now look at them! I think she's great value now, I hardly ever lose when I play her in matches with more than around 28 Mana, I guess it must just be the top half of C1 who own maxed legendaries.

I've got no intention of maxing my Chickens either. No point taking it beyond L5 when you can't afford maxed decks.

I'm surprised the specter has jumped so much, I didn't expect that so soon.

huh...I guess I always overlook my spector even though whie it is sitting there.

Nice levels up skills it gets. Hmm..maybe level 4 needs some more after all then!

It's good at Level 3 - blind is also quite useful. 25% less chance to hit I think. Think of that with no magic and the cocatrice at the front - with dodge and fly.

If yer opponent plays slow monsters, they basically can't hit you!
