What are the best tags to use on twitter to promote Hive?

in LeoFinance4 years ago (edited)

Twitter recently analysed 4 billion tweets from 2016 to the end of 2019 to reveal the most commonly used hashtags. (Link here)

They then used a combination of human coding and machine learning to remove topics such as politics and sports and identified six main cultural themes that people are talking about on Twitter.

These six themes represent the biggest uptrends in conversation over the past four years, and they’ve by no means stopped trending upwards.

In order of increasing popularity since 2016, these six themes are:

  • Tweets about ‘Creator Culture’ - up 462% (tweets about creative currency, ‘hustle life’ and connecting through video).
  • One Planet tweets – up 285% (tweets on the ethical self, sustainability, and clean corporations)
  • Tweets about Well Being - up 225% (digital monitoring, holistic health and being well together)
  • ‘My Identity’ tweets are up – 167% (fandom, gender redefined and ‘representing me’)
  • Tech Life tweets are up – 166% (blended realities, future tech and ‘tech angst’)
  • Tweets about ‘Everyday Wonders’ are up 161% - (DIY spirituality, awe of nature and cosmic fascination).

What strikes me about these themes, is what a natural fit so many of them are with Hive, especially the first trend ‘creator’ culture which is up a massive 462% on twitter.

You can download individual reports on each of the 18 main themes above (three themes per broader theme) and find out more details about the specific topics which are becoming increasingly popular on Twitter and about the specific hashtags.

The creator culture theme is an obvious fit for Hive

Tweets about creator culture have increased almost 500% in the last four years, with mentions of ‘side hustle’ being up 231% - so this theme of creating your own content and looking at it as a cheeky way of making something on the side, that’s massive news, and Hive is primarily about giving people a platform to do just that.

It strikes me that rather than just using #Hive or #Splinterlands in our tweets, we should be chucking in some of these hashtags too, to extend our reach!

Here are some of the most popular hashtags under the ‘create it till you make it’ cluster…

I take two things from this:

  1. At the moment, anyone who tweets anything about Hive should be including one of these tags – that means the most effective tweets will be linked to one of their posts – it’s a really easy thing to do if you’re an artist. Every single person should be using the #sidehustle tag
  2. The fact that #NewPatron is a trending theme suggests there’s real utility in making Hive a bit more Patreon like, not sure how that might work!?!?

Livestreaming and Podcasting are massive on Twitter

#SupportSmallStreamers is one of the most popular tags under this – we’ve got a lot of Discord shows that could usefully use this, and I know we’ve got quite a few musicians on Hive – so again tweets on music content using any of the above would be great.

Art tweets are HUGE!

10 000 % is a pretty big increase (probably from a small base), but art tweets more generally is on the increase, and here’s the main hashtags…

I know there’s a growing art community on Hive, especially since the launch of NFTs, which bridge the topics of Art and ‘Side Hustle’ and ‘future tech’ and ‘identity’, so anyone that posts art on Hive has a great potential to reach a wider audience.

Final Thoughts – what counts as effective marketing?

As I see it the most effective marking for Hive would consist of the following:

  1. Create great content that fits in with one of the six themes above.
  2. Tweet about it using any of the above hashtags and link to that content on Hive.

That’s it.

So rather than tweeting about Splinterlands and using the hashtags #splinterlands and #hive, we should be using #gaming #sidehustle #challenge #win

I’m sure if people like what they see, they’ll find their own way to Hive.

Final thoughts

I’ve only focused on the most popular of six themes covered in the Twitter research, because it happens to be the most natural fit with Hive, but there’s plenty more scope for tweeting about topics on the other main themes.

It's maybe a little disconcerting that there's been such a huge increase in interest in 'creative culture' and 'side hustling' on Twitter, and that's precisely what Hive is doing, and yet there's been a flat-lining of users over the past few months, or maybe this is a fresh new, crypto naive user market just waiting to be tapped, and we just need to reach them, with any or all of the above ####!

Of course, this is how to attract users, how to attract investors is another matter…….

Absolutely brilliant post. I've always hated using JUST HIVE tags as it's a closed system, but wasn't sure what to use in the few times I've been on Twitter.. ugh, another social media. Bottom line is we DO have to all work to promote it so doing it properly helps. Trying to promote on Twitter at least once a week.

Twitter users in general are a good cohort to aim at, more educated and younger than the population as a whole, and everyone's trying to hustle on there!

Outstanding job on your research. Yes, TwitterTM has become a very useful marketing tool and I agree it is important that we use tags other than those that are just HIVE-centric. I discussed this with @nathanmars during one of his live-streams on TwitterTM.

Additionally; using trending tags of social media on HIVE blogs/vlogs can also make a big difference just as you have done with this post. I know that we use many tags in order to gain the attention of current HIVE users/communities, but as there is a GOOGLETM script that crawls HIVE content, the tags we use to define the subject of our posts is important too!

A good tool to use if one cross-posts their videos to YouTubeTM is the TubeBuddyTM (not an affiliate link) browser extension. There is both a free version and a premium version (I use the free version as I am too cheap to pay for the Premium version). It only works with YouTubeTM but can also help folks for discovering tags for their @threespeak or @DTube videos. I am playing with the idea of getting in touch with the creator of TubeBuddyTM to see if he might want to share his content on HIVE.

With @fullalt providing their outstanding TwitterTM tools and all the folks marketing HIVE with their talents, we are doing really well! Thank you again for a great informational post!

using trending tags of social media on HIVE blogs/vlogs can also make a big difference

Hey that's all really useful information!

The tagging of this post was something of an accident btw - everything I put a hashtag in front of got added to the topics!

Great point and really important information for people using twitter as well. I've been trying to tell people for ages to multi tag into different relevant sections and spread our reach so this post is very helpful to actually break it down a bit more.

Of course, this is how to attract users, how to attract investors is another matter…….

I wouldn't be too worried about that for now. Investors look for value and users add value. If we grew our userbase x10 i guarantee some investors would be taking a much closer look at the whole eco-system. This would also increase our network effect since 10x users means a lot more people to spread posts and grow our reach. Slow and steady until we reach the point where people find us organically.

Shared to twitter. 😂

I would think Hive has posts that cover most of those topics. We don't want people to think it's just about crypto or even just Hive itself. I think those topics may scare some people off. We have art, music, philosophy, tech and many other themes. The POSH scheme ought to be good for sharing those on Twitter.

I really think that if we could get a few key influencers on board then we might reach a tipping point, but will they take a change on Hive? For some it may not seem worth their time, given what they make elsewhere, but they could promote it as somewhere their fans can earn too.

I totally agree, I think all we need is good general content shared on Twitter with the appropriate tags, if people see it on Hive they'll find their way here eventually!

The trending page is full of posts about Hive. It needs more variety.

With enough users and proper monetisation, investors are bound to come :)

You would have thought it would help! Assuming we're keeping Hive as a social platform that is.

TBH based on these trends, we'd be stupid not to.

Can we just do one common strategy and define tags that all would use in twitter ?

@nathanmars , can we just come up a list and share with all ? Its always good to have one common list and everyone using that.

I'll put something together, probably a better idea to have some variety!

I wonder if you could put a list together- maybe in columns- that were categorised under 'community' posts? So ie.. here's the top 10 for Build It posts, for Nat Med, for Ecotrain etc? It'd be great referral point and at very least a good idea for follow up post.

Oh yes, cheers! I'll do that, nice easy post too thanks for the idea!

SUPER HELPFUL post @revisesociology!! Post shared to @naturalmedicine & @abundance.tribe discords too.

shared to our twitterfeed 2.png

POSH:

Hey cheers!

I was actually updating my 'secondary qualitative data material' for sociology resources and stumbled on this, it just seemed super relevant to Hive!

Great post!

I mean, really good because it's very useful.

Hey cheers, I certainly thought so when I read the research!

So, I presume nature and charity are not hot topics?
What would a person tag for these two topics that could expose Hive on twitter if I may ask?

Thank you for the heads up here on these six themes!

Nature is - there's some hashtags in the downloadable here:

https://marketing.twitter.com/na/en/culture-and-conversations#/one-planet/sustainable-steps

Thank you kindly for the link Sir.

So rather than tweeting about Splinterlands and using the hashtags #splinterlands and #hive, we should be using #gaming #sidehustle #challenge #win

This one of the main reasons I stopped using Hive5 HiveisAlive etc.

First and foremost we need get our fellow Hive owners out of Discord to move to Twitter.

Then we need to make them Tweet more frequently using #HIVE and $HIVE

Then we need to slowly educate them to see the bigger picture

I'd personally even question the utility of tagging #hive on there - if someone finds decent content on Hive over and over again, and sees engagement, they'll get curious and eventually join Hive - if people find their own way there, they're probably more likely to stick around - I think it's just a matter of being patient.

There's also the fact that previous users may well come back, I know you've said that before!

There are billionaires, Angel investors, Venture capitalist, Many different businesses/projects and many different. communities spend time on Twitter.

We lost our STEEM brand. Using #HIVE and $HIVE make people DYOR about hive.

It's like say you're regular News Paper reader and you keep seeing ads talking about Bali all time. Then that makes you w curious about Bali and then you go and do your research and might find it Bali is somewhere you want to visit or not. But you definitely have heard of Bali. It like Network effects and Word of mouth.

Twitter is like Citizen journalism and more people use #HIVE the people know about Hive.

Thanks for sharing this! I need to get on Twitter more.

I guess tags on Twitter are just an addition. They're barely used by regular users (apart from contemporary events or virals). But will certainly use tags you have suggested

yeah tweets also need some general hashtags in there and not only hive tags so people get a bit broader interested.

tagging at itself is already a whole knowledge I have learned over the last couple of weeks. but...getting there!

sincerely I am more of Discord but I begin to notice the reach that can be reached through twitter, it will be a new beginning for me since I do not use twitter frequently but with these tips I will encourage me to do it, thanks for this valuable information @revisesociology

I've wondered for a long time whether it's possible to use Discord to market?

Not sure...!

I use it to promote my posts, what I meant was that I haven't used twitter for anything related to Hive's platform, only sometimes, but since a few days ago I've seen the growth that Hive has had in twitter so I'll learn how to get the most out of it and at the same time promote the platform

I got an initiative in mind which I plan to launch in the next couple of weeks to get people to promote Hive. Twitter will be a great place to help with that, but I haven't been that active on it. Will need to get up to speed again. Thanks for this

Sounds interesting!

Great write up. I’m going to add this info to my twitter repertoire.

Thank you
exhaustive list and
great ideas
I will be using #sidehustle and #art in my tweets soon
