Cross That Line

There have been a couple of pieces of news over the last few days that have piqued my interest, even though I haven't dived very far into them at all. But, it kind of feels like there is something going on and it might be worth keeping an eye out for what progresses.

The first piece is the clusterfuck that has been the ousting of Sam Altman (ex-CEO and founder of OpenAI), Greg Brockman (another founder of OpenAI), and what they have done to replace them. Then, they both getting hired by Microsoft (which owns 49% of OpenAI) to run an advanced AI team. Not only this, something like 500 of the 770 employees at Open AI might be making the shift over to Microsoft too, though how many will actually transition, is still very much up in the air. All of this comes as OpenAI looks to float on the stockmarket.

I wonder how far that commitment stretches and how quickly it weakens?

Whatever it is, these are some monumental public moves by several key players in an industry that is really just starting to make an impact on our daily world. An impact that for the most part, I am yet to see many positives for in the case of how it is going to affect society, though I seem to be in the minority.

And in other news...

A self-proclaimed "anarcho-capitalist" has one the presidential election in Argentina, which has been met by a huge amount of ... ridicule. Which is fair enough, as Javier Milei does seem like a bit of a nut, with crazy wig, cloned dogs, and a very negative attitude toward "leftards".

While an economist, now that he has won, the conversation is about his attitude towards climate change, Covid vaccinations, woke culture and the leftist media and their lack of transparency on their own shortcomings, but their complete attack on their enemies.

“The first thing I am going to say to the shitty, silly, parasitic and useless political caste is what I am not going to do. I will never go against private property, I will never go against freedom, I will never raise a tax, I will never create new taxes.” - Milei, 2021

Well, that is going to be an interesting approach to a government and if he does hold true to those words. I wonder whether he will start by bringing transparency into the government, or now that he is in, he will start to transform and conform into the same caste of animal he has replaced.

Whatever the result, there does seem to be a continued push back against the left woke culture, though as expected, it is just more polarization for agenda. For now though, this event in Argentina might seem like an anomaly, but I get the sense that there is going to be an increasing amount of movement in this direction, with resentment of governments growing, especially as they keep spending tax payer money like water, without actually benefitting the taxpayers. At some point, the people rebel.

In my own view, we shouldn't have to rebel against governments, because the governments should be working in our best interests. Yet, time and time again, it is shown that this is not the case and instead, we are both the cows to be milked to fund their plans, and the fodder to feed the cows to be milked. It is a circular economy, with us as the energy that drives it, but very little power over how we are spent.

It is unsustainable.

In so many ways. And as such, has created a massive amount of division, when we face challenges that require cohesion to overcome. The division is a control mechanism to maintain wealth and power, but the cost of it is, we are unable to solve the issues that are going to increasingly face us all, whether it be through changes in the environment, energy crisis, war and violence, overpopulation, food supply, or just our general sense of wellbeing. We are incredibly out of balance as a society and more disconnected from each other than ever, which is interesting since there has never been so many of us packed onto this earth at one time.

The drive for AI isn't going to be our savior, but one thing it might be able to accomplish is a more objective governance system. Combined with decentralized currencies and ownership, we might be able to finally shift away from this archaic system of rulers who have proven that they can't be trusted to do their job, which is to work for us, not against us.

I don't know if I will ever see us cross that line, where we are working together for wellbeing, rather than against each other for profit.

It won't be today.

Well, that is going to be an interesting approach to a government and if he does hold true to those words.

Microsoft is desperately in need of a piece of the future. Worrying if I may add.

I am eager to see where all his talking goes and how he approaches everything. I have a serious problem with presidents who promise too much upfront they tend to fail on the execution or go back to the same things they spoke against, if not do worse than they said was before them.

I have no idea where it ends up with this guy, and I don't think he is a shining example of a role model, but it is an interesting step.

I think people are starting to get too used to living in extremes and they have forgotten that there is a middle ground and it's okay to meet there every now and then.

I completely agree - there is no nuance now. I have often used "extreme" examples for illustration purposes, but the interesting thing now is, they aren't extreme.... People have some crazy views.

You aren't kidding there. It's hard to imagine some people actually believe some of this stuff.

I think it's helpful to see pollical movements as a pendulum... it swings to the left and people aren't satisfied with the results, it swings to the right and anarchy ensues, people get tired of the chaos, it swings back left again, etc as we've seen in so many countries already.

I think the fact that Javier Milei spends so much energy going after the left is probably a good indication that he's not going to achieve much but burn Argentina's institutions and government to the ground without any real recourse of providing a better solution. It's easy to destroy but it's much harder to lasting solutions that work for the majority. People only had two bad options to choose from, and they've gone with the wildcard. I'd honestly consider putting money on him not getting a second term, I'd guess the pendulum will swing back hard the other way.

I think it's helpful to see pollical movements as a pendulum...

Do you get the sense that the velocity has changed? It swings so fast and so wide, it is barely ever in the middle.

burn Argentina's institutions and government to the ground without any real recourse of providing a better solution.

I think this is the case too. And, I am not sure if it is a bad thing, because it highlight s again why we need to change the way we govern ourselves. We can do better than has been done, but we likely have to feel the pain of utter failure, before anything gets done to fix it.

Absolutely! The velocity has 100% changed, and I think that's because people feel like they are really struggling and are looking for more extreme quick-fix solutions.

I agree... it's going to be a good example to the rest of the world, and something good might come out of it eventually, but I think some Argentinians are going to feel a lot of pain in the short term, and it may take decades to recover. We'll see, but I suspect this will be worse than Brexit.

because people feel like they are really struggling and are looking for more extreme quick-fix solutions.

Ever wonder if it is just a feeling? Maybe we are too soft these days, so "struggle" might not be that bad.

We'll see, but I suspect this will be worse than Brexit.

Most likely, but have a more localized effect.

I think the feeling is relative. If people compare themselves to how their grandparents were doing at their age, they're living in a technological wonderland with endless possibility, but if they compare themselves to their parents, their debts are high and their earnings are low (percentage-wise). If people are comparing themselves to others, then the wage gap between the 1% and the middle class is absolutely massive, but perception is everything, people are doing better than they were two or three years ago, wages are up and inflation is down, but the perception (at least in the US) is that the economy is doing really badly. Some people think we're in a recession, other people think the US is doing incredibly well... and honestly, probably everyone is right to some degree.

In fact, I think we don't need a goverment. We can govern ourself as long as we respect each other and know the border of our freedom.

While I am not a huge fan of technological solutions to social issues, when it comes to governance, it is needed. An interconnected range of decentralized, opt-in environments goes a long way.

he will start to transform and conform into the same caste of animal he has replaced

Interesting. My money is on the latter. Something about trusting politicians in power doesn't just sit right with me yet

It shouldn't sit right imo. Politicians can't be trusted, not because of who they are per se, but because the system they operate within is fundamentally flawed.

Amusingly scant minutes after I read this J asked me if I’d heard about it 😆 told him I literally just read something about it minutes ago so I know it’s a thing but don’t know anything else.

Most if not all of the logistics and a huge chunk of governance is done by AI in my head universe, works out okay for them 😆

I actually think that an AI government (of sort) would probably work better for us overall, because it is predictable and transparent. We could tweak the algorithms as we learn more, but we don't have to worry about our conditioning to choose individual personalities - celebrities

And it's very definitely a thing that will have to be fully transparent open source as it quite simply will not work otherwise.

I think AI + robots will make our work easier in the 2030s. I want to buy a robot assistant for my garden. We will fairly distribute our work with him :)

Do robots mind listening to nagging? ;D

I don't know what AI will be like in the 2030s. I hope that robots equipped with AI will listen to my orders, and not vice versa :)

Well, should we say we don't need those politicians in government? That will be absurd because they control virtually everything. It is only in hive that I transact and talk without fear of prosecution. We might still have to believe them.

We don't need any politicians, yet we keep voting for people to lead us.

Why we claim not to need any politician is because they are not delivering to their promises. Voting must always be done to select leaders, so we only go out to vote with hope.

I think that we need more human intelligence and more Artificial working force.
Still, AI can be a quick answer to many topics, for those whom are not much interested into deepieing their knowledge and staying on the surface, with a centralized source of information that will become less and less debated.

Very few people are interested in going deep these days, fewer in the younger generations. Just look at how many people complain about their money situations, while they spend the time of a fulltime job scrolling the internet for entertainment purposes.

I think that is an interesting politician and I wonder how things will go. As it is, the current structure does benefit the rich if he just leaves the system as it is. However, I guess it's better than someone implementing new things.

Maybe it is good that some crazy people do some crazy things - might wake the rest of us up that the system is indeed crazy and needs replacement.

In my own view, we shouldn't have to rebel against governments, because the governments should be working in our best interests.

The thing is all the govt in the world are belonging to woke, so who are we against? when wars happened civilians are not victims civilians join the war, so why is narrative being created govts are evil. I feel it just a copout. Looking at woke companies stopping ads on twitter, it seems like woke culture is rattled that world is waking up against them.

so why is narrative being created govts are evil.

Ah, it isn't a copout, it is part of the system. The government is evil, we need a new government. But, the same system persists.

The AI story is interesting. Is it the old employee poaching? Was there falling out between Microsoft and OpenAI? Were there things that Microsoft wanted, that OpenAI were opposed to?

As for the Argentina news, I've heard that he is also very pro-crypto. If that's the case, that might be good for us in the long run.

I have no idea of what happened behind curtains, but if this is what happened publicly, I imagine it was pretty nasty.

He is an anarch-capitalist - he must be pro-crypto! :D

Talking about the man who says he will never go against private property or freedom of speech
I would not say it is a lie but politicians are known of making promises that they won’t fulfill
That is why so don’t even believe them anymore

Politicians don't lie, they do exactly what is expected of them ;)
