The Cost of Revenge

in LeoFinance4 years ago

A couple days ago I was typing and was interrupted by my watch vibrating. It was asking if I was doing a rowing workout.

I think I need to work on my typing technique

As well as the list my wife has given me.

While I still don't have Bluetooth enabled on the PC, the new Logitech Keyboard has a dongle with it, so I started using it today. Thankfully - It is awesome. I know that some people love mechanical keyboards, but I feel so much better typing on something that feels more like a decent laptop and after the stroke that has messed with my fingers and coordination a bit, it is far faster for me to type on these types of keys.

It is almost relaxing.

AND FAR QUIETER!

Stop shouting.

IMG_20220104_170749.jpg

It was a little more expensive than I would normally pay for a keyboard and well, I have so many from past PCs and work that it is kind of unnecessary, but with the amount that I type and the additional brain issues on top, I "splurged" a little - 119€ ($135) for a keyboard is a lot, but can you put a price on comfort?

Yes.

I came across a term today that I haven't heard before, but seems to be making the rounds. While I splurged, people are "Revenge Shopping" and diverting the money that they would have spent on travel and other consumer goods and services like eating out, on retail shopping instead as "revenge" for the lockdowns.

image.png

In my opinion, Shopping doesn't classify as revenge, though shopping could possibly be considered revenge in some cases of the example given:

"other spurned wives have taken public revenge on their husbands"

Was that the best example they could think of?

But, this term that they seem to be looking to normalize as a natural response, is not harming anyone else directly, other than the person partaking in the practice. While this period of time over the last two years has seen a severe widening of the wealth gap, for those who have had their bad spending habits unnaturally curbed, had an opportunity to change their own defaults and potentially start to build an investment position.

But, since people are people, most will do anything for instant gratification over long-term improvement. As a res ult, many have missed the opportunity, just as I have missed it in regards to getting a little healthier through exercising at home.

"Didn't see coming"

Really??

This entire pandemic has seen a massive drive toward retail consumption and especially for the online retailers that could cater at scale - you know, the ones that Blackrock and Vanguard are major investors in. To be surprised by increases in spending once people are "allowed out" but still can't eat out or travel is like the people in Finland who haven't changed to winter tires and are "surprised by the snow" every year.

These days, there are so many opportunities to invest, that it is only possible to take a fraction of them, but I wonder how many will look back on this period and realize that they took none of them. Hindsight makes it easy to always pick a winner, for instance saying "I should have bought Bitcoin" but under normal circumstances, what will win isn't very clear and there is a lot of uncertainty around it.

At the moment however, with the amount of "free money and additional disposable income" floating around, combined with the sheer volume of investment choice, the risk of complete loss is very low, but monumental gain reasonable. And, it isn't like people haven't been warned, as there are a constant flow of articles that cover all kinds of investment positions in mainstream media, even if they are poorly advised.

It is abundantly clear to most people with even a modicum of financial sense that ownership of value generating assets is the way to go, yet the majority of people are still spending instead of investing, with what they purchase coming with a silent guarantee that it is going to be valueless in the near future.

People like certainty.

But, it isn't just what is bought, it is also how that thing is going to be used. For example, purchasing a PC is not a luxury, it is a necessity for me to generate some income streams, but it is going to appear in the "consumer spending" column. And the keyboard, whilst not a necessity, does improve the experience (more than you may realize) of my process of earning that income. This will go to zero also, but what it generates in along its lifecycle should be many multiples more than the initial purchase price.

Tools of the trade.

but, this is not the normal consumer mentality and perhaps if it was, people wouldn't have as much fun shopping, as they would be more discerning with what they bought. Rather than taking revenge in ways that only harms themselves, they would instead take it in a more meaningful way, by becoming more independent and less reliant on the ones who have inflicted the conditions upon them, by buying generative assets that start to earn them wealth, not cost them.

As they say,

Revenge is a dish best served cold

This doesn't mean uncooked, it means calculating and in ways that are least expected. Cold revenge requires delaying gratification and investing into the outcome of the future. The instant gratification of retail shopping is not the behavior of the vengeful, it is the actions of the immature, a petulant child who will fail a test to spite the parents, not realizing what the cost to themselves may be.

But, at least this leaves more opportunities on the table for those who are willing to consider what value means and their own role that can affect the outcomes. Maybe, rather than dishing out revenge, perhaps a better revenge is,

Held in a cold wallet.

I suspect that in a few years from now, the people who did invest themselves into generative assets will be richly rewarded, but likely and at least in the traditional vehicles, it will be mostly the same people who always benefit. While the majority are out celebrating their freedom, the minority will be investing into more control.

I am trying to cut down all unnecessary expenses.
except stuff for my kids.
that said my 5 yo daughter was choosing a dinosaur toy recently and the price was also a factor - she didn't want the very expensive ones.
It made me proud 💪

The training starts young!

I don't spend that much on "crap" these days - but probably could cut back even more. My family though, I make sure they get enough :)

I was here, reading, 2022!

Last year I did buy some consumables - car, mattress, weight bench, but they have/will provide enjoyment and 'opportunity' :)

Most of what's being earned though is being put aside, for future ownership and control, hopefully!

You have been working out like a beast for two years... I have been eating like one.

for future ownership and control,

Just around the corner...

Answered my 2 latest comments in one :)

Not sure about beast mode but I've been chipping away, and will hopefully do the same this year. Need health to enjoy wealth yada yada :)

I need to get myself one of those older keyboards, the ones that type really fucking loud. I don't know why but I love the sound of them lol I've been in meetings with guys that have them and I'm slightly jealous lmao strange I know!

The revenge spending is an absurd thing to try and say. There's so many ridiculous things that the dinosaur media and mouthpieces are trying to spin in ways that try to deflect the core, critical issues. I just wish I invested more earlier but am glad that I've invested what I have, when I have. A bunch of people I know don't have anything.

By the way, how was your first date with the new role dude?!

I've been in meetings with guys that have them and I'm slightly jealous lmao strange I know!

Sicko.

A bunch of people I know don't have anything.

Same here. It is going to get tough in the next few years :/

THe new role has technically started, but I am not there til Monday next week - I took a holiday ;D

I hope you don't mind a freewrite about this post of yours, because I don't have time to make it as coherent as yours.

Revenge is definitely the wrong word. It's yet another attempt to make us feel bad about ourselves. I am buying stuff so that I have the necessary stuff when SHTF. Revenge has nothing to do with it. You invest with the future in mind. Same thing really.

What one feels one needs for the future is very personal. If someone thinks they can't live without musical instruments, they are right to invest in musical instruments. If one thinks piles of cash will see them through, they should amass some piles of cash. If we all think alike, we will be screwed. I'm investing in tangibles such as land, musical instruments, precious metals, etc. You promote investing in intangibles. You do you. That way, we've all got each other covered.

Funny!:

To be surprised by increases in spending once people are "allowed out" but still can't eat out or travel is like the people in Finland who haven't changed to winter tires and are "surprised by the snow" every year.

All I do is freewrite - I never mind :)

I think most people are just buying crap though. What I question is, how much influence is held over us in what we think we need for the future? I think a lot of what we consume is meaningless, but we feel we should - it is much like the education system that largely teaches irrelevant information, saying it is important for us to have a good career.

Some of us have started to think for ourselves. A great many of us in fact. We do not need to organize, we do not need to protest, we do not need to form groups. We need to all start thinking for ourselves.

But yeah. If you're not thinking for yourself, you're awash in influences that tell you to buy stuff you do not need. Also to believe stuff you do not need to believe, fear stuff you do not need to fear, and do stuff you do not need to do.

thinking for ourselves, consuming from each other.

Hmmmm... As simple as the rule of wealth is, a lot of people can't gain from it.

Investment is the key to wealth but instant gratification us what most people want.

The whole YOLO thingy.

A lot of people need to know how to control needs, wants and desires.

People need to invest in what thy need, to get what they want.

A lot of life lessons for success, are not taught - delayed gratification being one of them.

I think the revenge shoppers have been so dumbed down by their government that they are falling to any plot their government can think of, such as headlines about revenge shopping. How stupid are people really? It is not the spouse that made them stay home, it is not the spouse that is the reason for the lock down, it is the government. If people really want revenge, then what better way than to invest in alternatives to the government such as crypto.

All revenge shopping is, is an idiot with a new gun shooting himself in the foot.

Sadly, we can see that people are quite easily fooled and dumb.... I've said it to myself so many times of late it's sad.

It is a sad state of affairs the people, can't live with them can't live with out them. Everyday it seems like more stupidity is revealed.

All revenge shopping is, is an idiot with a new gun shooting himself in the foot.

:D
There are a lot of those these days - people are likely stockpiling in some countries too.

Shoot so would I but it's all yours. I know that list and can't type on a pc normal whatever keyboard either.

Happy new year Taraz.

Happy New year mate :)

Best opening paragraph of the year.

Even though only 4 days in, I'll take it!

I love my mechanical keyboard. It is quite loud. I will give you that. My worker has one too, so it is like a madhouse in the office when we are both typing up a Hive post!

My wife have found that we spend far less on groceries when we just shop online and pick them up versus actually going into the store. It is quite nice and something that I hope carries past the pandemic.

Ever heard Aggroed type?

The office is full of coders and they all prefer them also - I stay out of their areas :D

I have considered doing this, but always wondered how it works with fresh food - do they pick well?

It's hit or miss to be quite honest. Sometimes they do a really good job, others not so great. Sometimes depending on the season, the fresh produce isn't quite there.

I actually replaced my keyboard because my one before this one wasn't loud enough!

That is what I would expect from them.

How to spot a sociopath: tip 345

I suspect that in a few years from now, the people who did invest themselves into generative assets will be richly rewarded, but likely and at least in the traditional vehicles, it will be mostly the same people who always benefit. While the majority are out celebrating their freedom, the minority will be investing into more control.

Yes I believe the people who invented those assets we have been using from decades ago will surely be rewarded in a million times . Because with out those genius inventing what we are using today I don't think there would be any world of technology today.......So I would say They are the foundation of the technology we are in today

Many of the financial investment vehicles are based on nothing, but have high bars to access - the economy and investments are designed for the elite.

I always tell folks nothing is certain here anything can happen in the market, a lot of people keep regretting why they did not invest in crypto (btc) since 2010 I always ask them what if blockchain never made it through?
Lol... When it comes to investment nothing is certain.

For example, purchasing a PC is not a luxury, it is a necessity for me to generate some income streams, but it is going to appear in the "consumer spending" column.

This is the major problem with some people they tends to spend on what will not give them anything in return. Why buying items for show off that won't generate funds back to your wallet.
Your keyboard is earning for you already
Lol congrats I love the keyboard thank you for sharing @tarazkp

Yeah, people also think that they would have held dollar bitcoin for 13 years too...

This is the major problem with some people they tends to spend on what will not give them anything in return.

I think we are encouraged to trade our wealth for low-grade experience, told that it is A-grade.

Yeah that's right thanks for sharing this article.

Thinking another thing about Revenge until I get to the example relate well with it here.
Learned a new phrase of word.

Thanks for the great post

The money will return to the Ivestors, you just have to wait patiently.

yet the majority of people are still spending instead of investing, with what they purchase coming with a silent guarantee that it is going to be valueless in the near future.

It all depends on how they make or get their income because I don't see how someone would go through stress or sweat just to get an income to survive and lavish it any how instead of investing, well we are all entitled to our own opinion as human.

Most people think that because it was hard to earn, they deserve to treat themselves constantly with it. In the end, all they do is hard.

I don't remember when I used a keyboard last time because I use a good laptop. However, I have a Microsoft keyboard that is come from 2000s :)

"Revenge Shopping"

Never heard of it. Then, those people saved a lot during the lockdowns, now it is time to revenge for the days that they did nothing. Looks like a stupid trend.

Hah! Anything to help them convince themselves they're doing fine. As that simple saying goes,

There are two kinds of people...

Those looking for "revenge" and those offering revenge at a profit. And those reporting on the revenge. And those who need it. And the rest...

But there are two kinds of people.

Cold Cheers!

I'd be glad to take a revenge at myself. I've been doing that for a while revenge, self gratification, the truth is I just let myself recently enjoy for the short term after years of gratification.

It's so rewarding the rewards we obtain in the future when we make that sacrifive for the time being.

Most spending turn out to be necessary even though most are not necessary they inaversely have their advantages.

So many parables and so little time.

Surprise like people in Finland forgetting yo change to winter tires and being surprised by the snow.

This will not rank up there with my favorite Tarazisms

When you write a lot you can’t help but appreciate these literary gems. Word constructs that just put an idea across so well.
