Enough people left New York State in recent years that it lose representation in Congress. What NY lost, Florida gained.

It's even worse in California: It lost population for the first time since it became a state. Texas and FL gained.

Tennessee gained too.

I think you have blue becoming bluer and red becoming redder. If you make money in the a city like NYC, I think you will get tired of the 11% or 12% city tax (on top of all the other taxes).

Just by moving out of NYC 2 Long Island, Westchester, or New Jersey people lower their tax burden.

As 4 red/blue, if enough people move out then balance becomes lopsided, as in Washington DC (95:5 blue). W/ enough time, TX can turn blue.

Yeah or they can swing the other way. A constant battle in many states between the two.

Which means these cities are losing their tax base which could set off a spiral.

Places like NYC & California may lose their tax base and kick off a doom loop, but 1 side effect their elected leaders may welcome is guaranteed supermajorities at state & local governments. That's weaponized incompetence, pioneered in DC.

That is true although if they lose enough seats, it will be difficult to tap into the federal well.

Really doesnt matter because politicians today, no matter which party, excel at incompetance (or corruption).

Incompetence is weaponized b/c it causes flight from location, leaving only the very poor & the elites. The very poor R dependent on gov't. Elites have their voters locked up. It may happen in red places, but better known instances R blue.

Regarding accessing federal funds, places which lose representation in the House of Rep's still have their 2 senators, and they still wield significant influence when it comes 2 bringing home D bacon. That's why they love D current process.

its all a play

And why do people from New York migrate to other states? In Cuba almost everyone migrates to the US, it is alarming how many Cubans are migrating out of the country.

It's gotten a lot more difficult to live here in many different ways: financially, safety, socially, etc. It's definitively gone downhill compared to a couple of decades ago.

Well, it seems that the situation is similar in many parts of the world. I wouldn't have thought it

Reminds me of the way things were in the 1970s. I was very young but I still remember some news highlights talking about the city at that time.

My family immigrated to NYC during that time period and are comparing the current state to how it was back then. So that's more than likely a pretty accurate assessment. The 90s were closer to NYC's golden age.

NYC is turning into a shithole. It has high taxation, high crime, onerous regulation, and a quality of life that is in decline.

Wow, I never would have imagined that.

I mean it is a communist country right?

Cost of living and the regulation. I live in a rural area but am reasonably close to major services, so I have lower taxes and lower government intrusion in my life - while still retaining convenience.

I understand

High cost of living in New yourk might be the major factor. People would always want to move to states with less cost of living and less competition.

High cost of living is certainly a big part of the equation. Crime is another. Business regulation (over regulation) is a third.

thanks for filling in the details

States losing people.. getting interesting for sure. Be interesting to see where they all go!

In the US it's largely migrations from Democrat controlled states to Republican controlled states.

OMG!
But why would they choose to migrate?
That's something

If I lived in NY and could work remotely I would migrate out due to cost of living

okay high cost of living is a good reason to migrate and it is certainly understandable.
And rn,the cost of goods and services is alarming

Yeah without a doubt. That is who leaves typically, the ones with money. The person having to work at a counter in a hotel is stuck there.

the real question is why do they migrate then complain about where they are now & how NY is better 🙄

Oh well I wouldn't know but I hope they're all safe wherever they're migrating to.

It's gotten a lot more difficult to live here in many different ways: financially, safety, socially, etc. It's definitively gone downhill compared to a couple of decades ago.

High taxes, rising crime, deterioration of public services. The usual reasons.

State or City?

Since COVID people have realised there is more to life than concrete jungles. In Aus regional areas and suburbs are starting to trend. My home went from 850k to 1.26m value in 18 months!

Is that the city or the state? I always loved driving around New York State
