I don't know what kind of relationship you all have with Web 2.0 social media platforms. I'm talking about Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), TikTok, YouTube, X, etc.
If you still use these platforms daily, I need you to stop and think about how they work. How have they changed over the years? How have relationships between people on these platforms evolved? How has content changed in recent years?
I'll tell you my experience, let's see if you relate to it.
For every two posts from people I follow, I find an ad or paid content trying to get my attention.
I no longer see my friends' posts because the algorithm says they shouldn't interest me.
As soon as I talk to someone in real life about an interest or need, my smartphone's microphone listens in and I'm bombarded with ads for whatever I've talked about.
The posts that get the most attention fall into these categories:
- a girl acting provocatively and/or undressing;
- cute or awkward animals;
- content that makes you angry and outraged;
- content that makes you depressed;
And then we have content created by AI bots...
Have you ever compared the comments section on Hive to those on Instagram or TikTok? No? Well, here it is:
ONE random post I was reading on Hive
Three different posts on Instagram
Can you spot the difference?
Hive is the real social network here. People know each other. People TALK. People talk to each other. They listen and respond. Friendships are formed with people whose faces you don't even know. Based on what? The life experiences we share.
Are you a woman? You don't have to take off your clothes to get likes and comments.
Are you an artist? You don't have to beg for attention.
Do you share technical and scientific information? You don't have to make fun of or anger people to get them to read your article.
Do you see the value in all this? Traditional social media sucks. They're draining our brains. They're turning us into puppets.
The value of Hive isn't its market price. And it's not even the people who populate it. Because there are people on the other side, too.
The value of Hive lies in the chance it gives us to talk to each other without being interrupted. Without having to rush. Without having to get angry or horny. The value of Hive lies in the opportunity it gives you to stop, take a breath, and speak your mind, without fear of being spied on, offended, sold out, attacked, or put down.
Okay, why am I bringing this up?
Because every time Hive's price drops significantly, a flood of posts about its price comes in. Of course, it's right to make optimistic posts to reassure others, talking about how it's right to build and stay for the long term. It's right to show that there are people who believe in this blockchain and intend to stay, and this creates stability and security, especially for new users. Then there are all those who keep saying, "Now is the right time to buy!"
I think it's always the right time to buy Hive, since it's OUR platform. We own it.
And I'm not denying the existence of people who live off Hive's value, as well as all the developers whose work for the blockchain and our beloved apps depends on Hive's value repaying them.
Many who write and comment on these posts say, "I'm here to stay. I'm in it for the long term. Even if Hive dropped to 1 cent, I'd still be here, thanks to the community."
True, but why? Think about it.
Because we have no choice. Where else can you find a place where we can do everything we do here?
Just imagine doing everything you do on Hive, but on Facebook, X, and YouTube. It makes me sick just thinking about it. It's simply not possible.
If your house is worth $1 tomorrow, would that be a valid reason to abandon it? Would you leave it to go live at the mall?
Hive is ours, and its value isn't in the price. That's why we're staying.

Just stumbled onto this post through the Bro discord, wrote a similar post moments ago. (Really, I should have used Comment Rewarder too, I always forget about that!)
What is Hive's USP, clearly it isnt the money. Can we actually build Hive into something worthwhile, competing with all those 'mainstream' social media platforms?
I mean, I'd love to spend my time building Hive and onboarding users, but is it really possible? Could someone have a 'company' dedicated to growing Hive and all its awesome communities/projects? We'd need to overcome the humanistic urge of tribalism and egocentricness.
(Sorry for the 'shilling', I'll drop my post in a spoiler so people can totally ignore it if they don't want to see it)

I would love my house to be worth $1 tomorrow. I would need to pay far less taxes and rates on it :)
But HIVE is my digital home, too. Genuine engagement. Genuine people. If we could get rid of the shitty later two token bots that spam up comment sections (sure the author can mute) - it would make for an even cleaner, awesome place.
So many people just don't "get it", even those that are already on HIVE.
I'm glad you're here, and I am glad that you do indeed get it.
Lol you're right about the house
About tipping bots in comment sections, sure they are a bit annoying, and yet they represent a way for Hiveans to create a sense of community, engagement and reward each other. Things we don't have on traditional social media.
I'm glad you're here too, it's always a pleasure to read your posts 😊
It just adds noise the the genuine conversation. :) At least we're not full of purely fire emojis and love heart eyes
🔥🔥🔥👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️🤣
This tends to be the reason most give for sticking with Hive: the social aspect. Is it truly enough to advance Hive though? Many are pushed away by those 'unsocial' parties that seem to control the narrative on Hive.
As for Tipbots, they have their place, I do prefer those that put all the tip announcements into a single thread, though, instead of plaguing the comment sections! (Although those threads now seem to be getting hit with downvotes too) It's one of those things that is constantly developing, I guess, guided by the will of the hivians!
I don't think I have experienced those "unsocial" parties that you mention 🤔 Maybe it's just because I treat Hive as a social media platform, so I'm just here posting my stuff and reading other people stuff. And I do that in contexts which I'm interested in so I miss all the drama, I guess?
You're doing Hive the 'right way' then!
I guess most people who get caught up with those 'unsocial' parties are trying to game the system in one way or another. As a project owner and previous witness on Hive I've always tended to try to keep tabs on 'everything' going on. And, reading the drama can be fun (especially when you're not a part of it!).
Maybe I need to take a step back, focus on the little things and continue my journey with a focus on 'myself' and creating the kind of environment I want to be a part of! At the end of the day, we only see what we allow ourselves to see. Staying on the positive side of Hive creates a much better experience than drowning in negativity!
I don't mind the idea of the tip bots, but yeah, they give the comment section a real spammy look. I think Ecency deals with them very elegantly, hiding (some of) them behind a small icon that you need to click on to see. Unfortunately, Peakd's approach of simply minimizing (some of) them isn't nearly as nice.
Hive is my digital home these days. I use FB a bit, but the feed is full of crap. I get the videos of 'sexy' women, but never watch them. I'm only on there to stay in touch with a few people.
Hive lacks the privacy features that FB has, but for open groups is offers an alternative with our communities that have moderation.
I have made more friends on Hive than any other platform and I have met quite a few in person. Okay, so there are trolls and others less nice folk, but I try to avoid them.
I've seen the price at highs and lows. I still post most days whatever it is.
A friend of mine sent me a midget wrestling video on facebook once and I clicked on it.
Facebook's algorithm then determined that I wanted to receive a deluge of midget-related content, including "sexy" midgets-twerking.
I did not.
I had to downvote midget posts for a week or so to excise it from my feed.
It is hard to persuade them that you don't like something. I've pretty much given up trying to tell them. You also get fake accounts trying to scam you. There was a Hive one recently and they rejected my report about it!
I've read lots of posts over the years like this, every time the price dips.
You say it very well. I'm actually really worried Hive will die. I can't imagine my life without it.
Guess I'm still some sort of a newbie ahahah
Maybe my words are filled with the optimism of a 1 year old hivean. But man, I'm so sick of web2 social media. If Hive will die I just hope to find something similar somewhere because I don't have the skills to build something like this. And I think we all really need this thing we have here
Look I've been here eight years and I'm still hopeful and naive. I dont give a shit about the price these days, I just care about my hive homies, and I'm not just waxing lyrical and being all soppy. This place is part of my life - I dont care if it's worth 2 cents or 200.
Okay okay, if it's worth $2 I'm cashing in, haha..
Completely agree my friend! Hive is more unique than rare!
Cheers

All very true my friend.
A good post, thanks.

What a great post. A lot of them popping up that complain and whine about the price and how it's all a sham now. They are still posting though, but dumping all rewards on market.
I have been here almost 8 years and pretty sure im here for the long haul hehe😃
Hive has a ton of pottential, it just has not had the time to really shine yet.
I am not worried about price in a sense u might assume. I have some auto trading setups and my current buying average is 0.17 so I need it to increase more than 1% from this price. It will restart the loop prints more money. I want hive to be more volatile and less of a stable coin so I can trade more.
