Today I wanted to laugh about the little man and his interests.
Forts Anywhere
The little man is a boy through and through. He has been naturally drawn to all kinds of funny and outdoors related things but one thing he's started getting into more is building forts and makeshift outdoor survival shelters!
One of the great things about keeping kids outside and making sure they get enough activity out there is that sometimes they tend to have incredible imaginations! My son is certainly one of those kids. He loves being outside and is always asking to go do something out there which is good for me as it keeps me busy but also exercising. We were recently waiting for an appointment to finish so we decided to just hang around while we waited. That turned into him using his imagination and entertaining himself for nearly an hour lol.
In the hour span of time, he managed to make a fort in three different spots. He loves watching camping, hiking and other videos online which is good because he's got a lot of natural ability and eagerness to be outside. I don't want to screw that up with something like video games, at least not until he's older and learns to balance these things.
With his affinity for outdoor things, he's been watching a few more camping videos than we normally do so he's been all about that of late which is good. I plan on going camping with him in the near future, it'll be an adventure for the both of us since I've never camped in a tent outside before myself lol so looking forward to that!
The videos he's been watching have been sometimes around how to build a makeshift shelter outside so that you can survive in a pinch. I think those skills are going to be good to have in the future for sure, especially if he's going to be the one trying to become an expert at it lol I'll leave some of those pieces up to him!
He was fussing around with making it in a perfect way. This one here was actually his best one because he remembered that it wasn't about doing all kinds of crazy stuff and spending all your energy to make a super complicated fort or shelter. What's often best is to make one that's good enough so that you can get out of the elements and get some sleep but also to conserve energy and use what's around you to make it, which makes a bush like this perfect! He was proud of himself for finding a bush that he could use in this manner lol.
He wasn't entirely satisfied with that though and he went back to the tree. He's got an idea in mind more about trees than about using something like a bush. The tree here was a good choice because you are far more likely to need a lean-to shelter like this than you would be seeing a manicured bush like that lol so I wasn't too bothered by him switching around places often. It was just fun for me to watch him do these things and stay in the moment instead of sitting down on my phone and not paying attention.
The lean-to here was a little more difficult for him though because the tree was insanely coarse and had a lot of places where he tried to lean his head against it and laid against something sharp or pokey so it was rather uncomfortable. I guess more like you would find in the woods camping so that's not a bad thing!
All of this was done in a parking lot of a business lol so that was a really funny thing to think of, we don't need anything crazy expensive, fancy or complicated with my son. You give him a yard, some trees, a few tools and he will be content for days or weeks lol

HA, I love it when they build forts. My two love doing it. Although it can be annoying when they suddenly decide to build a giant one indoors!
Hahah yeah he's been on a fort kick lately! He's been building them all over the house, turning the whole living room into a fort lol it's fun except when it comes time to wind it down and take it down for the day then it gets ugly.
LOVE IT! We used to do all that stuff as kids. It makes me grateful that we had no phones, no social media, limited tv time allowed and LOTS of opportunities to be in the garden and the bush doing and making stuff. Bless!
Haha yeah I know for sure! It was a different time for sure but an awesome one. My cousin was the cool dude and had a fucking beeper when we were like 14 lmao so random that his mom would beep him.
