On this occasion I will share my experience when I went to one of the Sumatran elephant conservation places or better known as the conservation response unit. Which is located in the interior of the cot girek forest of North Aceh.
Before I continue to tell further, how good is it that we first know what a CRU is?
Conservation response unit or abbreviated as (CRU) is an institution established to resolve conflicts between humans and Sumatran elephants.
Moreover, the CRU's task is not only that, but they also prevent illegal hunting of wild animals.
Aceh province itself already has 7 CRUs in various districts or cities, including:
- CRU Serbajadi, East Aceh District
- CRU Cot Girek, Aceh Utara District
- CRU Manee, Pidie District
- CRU Pinto Rime, Bener Meriah Regency
- CRU Woyla, Aceh Barat District
- CRU Sampoiniet, Aceh Jaya District
- CRU Trumon, Aceh Selatan District.
This time we will visit CRU Cot Girek. To reach the Sumatran elephant conservation site which is located in the interior of the Cot Girek forest in North Aceh, we travel approximately 2 hours from the Lhoksukon city.
Accompanied by an expanse of oil palm plantations and unspoiled forests, we only rely on google maps as a direction marker. When we got there we were welcomed by the head of the CRU.
And we had a warm conversation with him, during the day the mahout (elephant handler) was bathing the elephants in his bathing pool.
when we arrived we were unlucky that only one elephant was in the CRU camp,while the others were still in the forest.
Oh, by the way, this Cot Girek CRU has 4 elephants including:
- apan
- Melu
- oto
- Marni
After bathing, the day was getting late
It was time for us to take a selfie with the Sumatran elephant.
