HEALTHY OBSESSIONS: BIKES BIKES AND MORE BIKES

in OCD4 years ago

poppy edit.jpg

I love #motorcycles and always have, any type shape or size I just can't get enough of them. I was once accused of being obsessed with them something that I agreed with seeing no issue with that tag. But for some obsession is considered unhealthy and the definition suggests so.

When someone is obsessed, they've lost control of their feelings about the object of their obsession. The adjective obsessed is often used to simply mean "very interested," but when someone is truly obsessed, their interest has become compulsive, and they've begun to lose control over it.
https://www.vocabulary.com/

Whilst I can accept that being obsessed with a person who doesn't have the same feelings for you is a issue is it really a negative to be obsessed with a piece of machinery or a hobby or am I just happy to wear a badge with negative connotations?

Since I was a child I have owned and raced bikes, through my youth they gave me the power to escape on my own and as a adult bikes became a hobby and a investment. I have over the years purchased a uncountable number of machines and currently have more than I can remember. I am constantly looking at classified adds and on auction sites with a view to add to my collection, often buying basket cases that the average person would consider junk.

But here's the thing these scrap heap ready bikes give me hours of pleasure and disappearing into the workshop with a rusty relic of the road to appear months later with a restored gem is one of the most satisfying feelings I get.

That feeling is extended to riding them also, getting out on the open road with the wind howling around you while sat on top of a roaring macing is unmatched. Something that has become more enjoyable now that the wife also rides and we can tear up the tarmac together.

So back to the title of being #obsessed, someone who spends their life conserving nature, looking at their stamp collection or painting a masterpiece, for these people their passion is all consuming and therefore by definition obsessive but is what they are doing a negative thing? I feel not, so the question is should we take another look at how we define this word?

Until such time as some one can explain to me why being dedicated to a interest is a negative I shall continue to wear this badge with pride, "OBSESSED" you bet your ass I am!

Thanks for taking time to look at my post, until next time stay safe folks!

That's amazing! I completely agree. The emotion that two-wheelers give cannot be explained by words :)

!discovery 30

I think you have to ride to understand the feeling, compared to being cocooned in a car i'll take the bike and the elements every time.

Oh yeah, looks like bike heaven to me.

@johannpiber, A good friend may also like this and @bigtom13 might also have a peep!

Where are the bikers on Hive? You will love this!

Really great stuff here and congrats on your restoration work!

Btw. What is the name of the one in the last photo? I have never seen it before?

Thanks, the little bike at the end is a Brockhouse Corgi powered by a 98cc Excelsior 2 stroke.
@missionmx started a community #motorcycles but not much traffic there.

An amazing little bike that you have there. A Blockhouse Corgi of all things.
There should be many bikers on Hive, but the mission is to gather them.
Have you guys considered alternative tags? Such as #motorbikes?
Yes, I think you have.

I have and tried them in the past with little effect, I also thought about starting my own community and may still do that in the future.

Your own community might be the answer my friend.
All that you need is the right contact might even be a witness that knows where the bikers hide here on Hive.

I think it may be the way forward i'm going to do some digging around and try to get some idea of where the bikers are.

Good idea and I will also keep an eye out!

Thanks a lot my friend, that's a great post, I just wouldn't know how to ride the bike on the last photo ... because there's not enough air in the tires 😉

Cheers and !BEER and have a great day and week 😊

Hahaha, that last little bike is a "Brockhouse Corgi" of all things Sir Johann and Paul hasn't restored it yet.
I asked him what it is, as I have never seen that design before, but I have not Googled it yet.

The war Arial's are my favorites and I like how he puts the histories of the bikes in his posts.

His post before the one that I tagged you in, explains all about the the thousands of Arials that they built to rescue the troops that were trapped as the German army was advancing.

You also have a great week and thank you!

I have never seen such a motorbike before, but there are a lot of them to see if you google it 🙂
Right, motorbikes played a role in WW2 - Harley and Indian rode for the United States.

Cheers and !BEER

Still have to get to Google my friend. I remember there was some movie with Steve Mcqueen on a Harley, but I forget the movie's name.
They did indeed play a very important role in the war.

We also have a very old aeroplane here that as was used as a mail carrier in the war and I like all of the old things.

Blessings and thank you!

I'm late with my replies - watched some YouTube videos yesterday evening and when I woke up it was too late ;) lol

I know he was riding motorbikes, but I cannot remember such a movie. I have done a quick search, but have found only this video where he's riding a Triumph:

I like these old things too, if the people take care of them and not just let them rust.

Just remembered, it was "The Great Escape" and I am confused about the bike.
No need to worry about the lateness, as I do the same my friend.
Lovely sunshine here today and tomorrow.

Now when I talk about the "Cape of Storms" named as such in the early days by the explorer Bartholomeuw Diaz (Don't know if I spelled correctly), have a look what I am talking about here below!

That is certainly not a weak little tree, but a giant and he finally surrended to the high speed storm winds!
End of days for a new Volvo!

Great post - I have read some wise words and seen some cool photos. I'd love to have enough space for my own workshop. My wife and daughter don't ride, but I do and my son loves it too 😊
Have a great week @biggypauls.

Who needs a garden? Pull up all the flowers and build a big shed is my advice😂 What sort of bikes do you ride?

I have no garden, only a balcony, but believe me, if I had a garden I would already have built a shed for the bikes 😉 lol
I have a little Harley Sportster 883 and my son loves Supermotos.

Cheers and !BEER

ah the baby Sportster, we don't have a lot of Harley's where I come from which is the UK, i'm more on your sons side I have had one supermoto but more of a motocross man. I must look into the !BEER thing I get a few off people but to be honest have no idea where they go or what to do with them, appreciated all the same.

My Sporty might be the smallest of all Harleys and many don't even greet me, but they see only my back anyway ... and it is my baby 😉 lol
