The last slice

in OCD4 years ago

It's unavoidable...One moment it's all there and the next you're staring wistfully at the last slice knowing, it too, will soon be gone.

I feel a little like that at the moment in respect of my brother's visit here; It'll soon be over and he, his wife and my little nephew will be heading back home to the top of Australia, a long way from here. It's been great to see them of course, so much fun to have them around, but I find myself wishing they could stay. I'll miss them.

My nephew has bonded really well with me taking up from where we left off at Christmas when they were down last. He calls out for me and it's uncle this and uncle that which is really cool for me. He's a good little boy, expressive, funny, intelligent and really good-natured. I'm going to miss him a lot.

A few days ago their flights got cancelled for no apparent reason and I was happy that they would be around for longer although they have since got new flights...A day earlier than the original ones which sucks!. Bummer!

So, they're flying back tomorrow.

Today we're hanging around at home and we're cooking up a big meal for tonight. When I say we I mean the girls; My wife Faith and sister in-law. The boys, my bro, nephew and myself, are doing other more important things...Playing with Lego. 😂 (Don't worry, we'll do the washing up so it evens out.)

I've had a really nice time with them during this unexpected visit. Their reason for coming here was our dad's funeral and had they not come down for it we wouldn't have seen them until mid-2021 so I shouldn't complain about them leaving, I should be grateful they were here! And I am of course.

It'll be sad to say goodbye to them tomorrow although we have no choice. We've got the memories though, and our visit to their part of Australia to look forward to next year.

Anyway, right now all this talk is making me hungry an I have this piece of tasty orange cake to eat, and a coffee to drink.

I hope y'all are having a great weekend.

La familia es importante

I think this means family is important, correct? I don't speak Spanish, but I figured that much out. Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it.

I feel ya! The first few days after the leave is always the worst! But well, that's life! Can't have too much of a good thing can we!

True, too much of a good thing takes away the novelty if it I think.

I’m glad for you to hear that you have a good time with your family and are bonding with your nephew.

A lot of my family lives within an hour drive, so we often go to see them for just an afternoon or evening.

I can’t imagine what it would be like to not see them for more than a year.

It's a 4day drive to get to where my brother lives and to fly it takes almost a day with two 2.5 hour flights and a stopover. It's not feasible from a cost perspective to fly there the time. We just make the most of the time we have.

Wow, that is such a different situation.

But, yes make the best of what you have, that’s the key in all of life.

Yeah, that's all we can do right? Make the best of any situation.

When family members living far away come together, it is really difficult to leave. but transportation and technology are so advanced that there is no need to think of anything bad. I think you will come back together for good reasons as soon as possible. I wish you a perfect day with your niece's brother and relatives..

Thanks for your nice words. Yeah, we'll make the most of the time we have and look forward to the next time we catch up.

It's never an easy thing to miss your loved ones, but at least you have something great to look forward. Seeing them again in their part of Australia. And until that time, you have great memories and phones and the internet to make it bit easier. Enjoy the last day together as much as you can!

You're right...We video call a lot but there's nothing like face to face I guess.

There was been the same situation here before. Usually, we go to our grandmother's place, where our uncle and my little friends were.

Here COVID is getting a little bit worse, now all roads are locked and it's hard to go outside. Now I'm totally bored in here.

It's not too bad where I am but in the State of Victoria it is getting very bad again. They are talking about going to stage 4 restrictions again...All other States of Australia have closed their borders to Victoria.

We can hope that everything will over soon.

Fingers are crossed. 🤞

I'm glad you've got family around you brother. specially at this period of time when you need them the most. :)

I'm sure you guys will get together more often from now on. <3

We can't get together more often really...There's 4,000km between where we live and we all have work commitments. So, we make the most of the time we have. We'll see them in a year and that time will go fast I think.

It sucks that you guys are very far from each other. ;/

But you are right. The time you guys get together would definitely have a great quality. :)
Yeah, this should pass quickly!

Sucks that they have to go back a bit early. Perhaps you guys will be able to head to them for a visit soon.

At least you guys have had something to do to break up the Corona nonsense.

Yeah, I was hoping they'd be delayed. Oh well.

We've had a good time and there's talk of a FNQ trip next year, rod tell or fly,not sure yet. Should be good to get up there again for a bit.

Vic is teeing off, SA isn't to bad as far as the corona thing goes...Some light restrictions but otherwise not too bad. NSW ramping up again though. What a fucking joke.

If you drive, perhaps head out camping - I guess you can also fly and rent some equipment once there too. Would be nice.

Screw corona - it is a waste of effort.

I'll take my camper trailer if we drive. He has a good spot at Davies Creek for camping. We'll head there with them. Kayak with the crocs. 😂🐊

Going well thanks mate and that cake looks awesome 👍

Tasty cake...Just a Woolworths one.

Like having the last supper together! Goodbyes always suck after spending time with each other, but spending time is really priceless! Sucks that it was for the reason which it was, but godo to have each other to deal with it.

Good luck there!!

I agree, nice to have family around at times like that. We had a nice week hanging out too. Saying goodbye will suck ass, but we'll see each other again.

Here's to seeing them again mate, a year nowadays is a whisker and before too long, you will hear that ringing call of uncle, uncle again.
Problem is that when we don't see them often is that they grow so fast.

I might be lucky to see some of my grandchildren at the end of the year, but sadly not all of them.
The last time that I stood next to my eldest grandson "Reece" 16 now, was when he was 15 and at shoulder height to me, so he will soon top 6 feet like his grandfather Lol.
Amazing how one can be so proud of the new generation.

It's the missing out of their stages that makes me feel sad. Still, time will fly and he'll be a brand new little guy by June next year. They fly out tomorrow...

I think you know exactly how I feel considering what you said about your grandson.

Yeah, one has that feeling of loss inside. Especially knowing that you are not a consistent part of his life and there's nothing that you can do about it. All that we can do is to make an impact in their lives every time that we see them and hope that as they grow, they don't drift away, as their young lives are very busy.

Best is to take out a policy for him that pays out at the age of 21 , as at least mine will remember me when they get to that age hahaha

I feel for you my friend!

And here we have the boys doing the most important thing in the world... Playing with Legos. I'm glad to be a lad, and not a lassie in this case. I'd miss out Lego time with old G-Dog! I never had orange cake before, but this looks mighty scrumptious. Sounds like a great pairing to a nice cuppa 😋

We always balance out the workload around here and sometimes it goes one way or another I guess too...So, the girls weren't too worried that the boys played Lego while they cooked.

Oh yeah, that orange cake was really nice. Moist and flavoursome. Great with tea or coffee.

Good to know that you boys are more than gentlemanly enough to help out !😁 God, every time I pop open your blog page, all I can see is the scrumptious cake. I haven't had cake in so loooooooooong. FEED ME!

Get cake bro...Man cannot live on healthy food alone!

Hah, you assume so. But in fact I've had nothing but fat, carbs, and loads of protein this whole time! Plus, some grease on the side. Adopting cake into my diet would literally be the icing on the... well, cake!

Nothing wrong with a cake diet.

If the doctors ask, then I'll just tell them that G-Dog said it would be fine.

Thank you, I appreciate it.

This cake looks delicious! I am sure it will be hard to say goodbye, you all had such a great family time!

It was good cake...Orange cake...Nice with tea.

Oh yes😍 I have not eaten much cake after my cake mania on your Hive celebration lol. Now I feel I might want some. Mhmmm cake🎂😂😍

Haaaa... Coffee. Never without the coffee.

Thanks for sharing the visit. Even if we did not see much of them on the photo side. You painted a pretty good picture of them.

My brother doesn't really like his image on the internet, or his wife and son so I've been limited from a photo perspective.

Goodbye is always hard! I cried while saying goodbye to my sister when I got married. But for some reason I am focused on the cake :D It looks really delicious.

Lol...Yeah it was good cake! Orange cake with poppy seeds. Scrumptious!

I sometimes make poppy seed and lemon cake. I think I will do it when I go home :D

Yum!

I'm just about to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake and settle on the lounge for some TV watching. Such a nice way to end the day.

I think I would like the same thing! But I'm at work and time is not passing :(

Ah ok. It's 8pm Monday here...My day is done...Now cake, coffee and TV time! 😂

Time is going slowly huh? I hate it when that happens. Dig in though, it'll be over soon.

I plan to prepare a cake and coffee themed post in the evening :)

aww it looked like a big piece of blue or stilton in the thumb, hmm cake will have to suffice :) its ok to be a little self centred once in a blue moon, the biggest challenge Annabelle and I are having is integrating back into people, with Mum next door it's been easy, seeing my brother, and brother in law and his husband is going to be interesting, dammit even going for coffee is a mission.

Lol...Cake, blue or stilton...It's all good!

I hope you guys have been going well.

It is indeed, and we are thank you, slowly easing out of lock down, from Friday masks required in shops.
