illustration of the little Arianna
The written word is a very powerful communication tool, capable of conveying emotions of a different nature. But when this is not enough to break the reader's heart, here come the illustrations, drawings that can get where the text can't get.
I realized this project for a university exam, for which we were asked to choose one of the selected texts and to produce 4 illustrations related to it.
I chose to illustrate the story about a little blind girl: Ariadne. A little girl who loved nature and, living in the middle of the woods, couldn't wait to explore and play, not caring about her condition.
In these illustrations I represented the scenes that, in my opinion, were the most emotional and effective.
The whole project was realized with the Photoshop program.
I used the same method to produce all the illustrations acting, as always, in phases:
PHASE 1: preparatory sketches
At this stage, the foundations are laid for the entire project, and the sketches do not require precision, let alone accuracy. For them to be effective, it is enough to insert the basic shapes and some hints of particular details or objects, so as to have a basis on which to produce the complete work.
For this project I had many ideas on how to make the child: cartoon, realistic, manga style or American comics. Obviously I had also identified some elements and concepts that I would have inserted anyway, whatever the style used.
In the end I opted for a cartoon/realistic style, which involved the creation of an extreme simplified body that was not consistent with reality, but without giving up the details and visual quality typical of a purely realistic design (something that can be found especially in clothing).
The one above is one of many attempts made for the representation of the girl.
In the end, after having succeeded in creating a design that satisfied all my needs, I also created a base for the "background" which, in this case, is formed by a sort of pedestal on which are inserted elements characteristic of the scene represented.
The choice of the pedestal was made to recall the idea of a statue, a real and concrete object simply resting on a plane.
After choosing the style to use, I made the remaining three sketches.
STEP 2: Color and details
Once all the sketches are finished, the next step is the addition of color, creating all the small details due to the material, light, age, atmosphere, etc..
In this phase I preferred to concentrate on a single piece at a time, reaching each time the final effect for each part created.
Obviously some things (like the lights) have to be inserted at the end, because only after the work is finished you can determine how the light will affect the different materials and with what intensity.
For the creation of the girl I used a very hard brush, also for the creation of lights and shadows. I made this decision because I wanted the final result to look extremely plastic and vivid. For the realization of the pedestal and everything on it I used instead a very soft brush, which allowed me to better manage the effects of light on trees and bushes.
STEP 3: text input and layout
The last step is, of course, text input and space management.
The text must be inserted in such a way as to make its relationship with the illustrations as harmonious as possible, which, with the text next to it, become clear and legible.
This story can be seen in many ways, I decided to interpret it in a sad way but, just for this reason, to represent little Ariadne as a brave and nice nature explorer.

La parola scritta è uno strumento di comunicazione molto potente, in grado di trasmettere emozioni di diversa natura. Ma quando ciò non basta per fare breccia nel cuore del lettore, ecco che intervengono le illustrazioni, disegni in grado di arrivare lì dove il testo non può arrivare.
Ho realizzato questo progetto per un esame universitario,per il quale ci era stato richiesto di scegliere uno tra i testi selezionati e di produrre 4 illustrazione inerenti ad esso.
Io ho scelto di illustrare il racconto che parlava di una piccola bambina cieca: Arianna. Una bambina che amava la natura e, vivendo in mezzo ai boschi non vedeva l'ora di esplorare e giocare, non curandosi della propria condizione.
In queste illustrazioni ho rappresentato le scene che, secondo il mio parere, erano le più emotive ed efficaci.
L'intero progetto è stato realizzato con il programma Photoshop.
Ho utilizzato il medesimo metodo per produrre tutte le illustrazioni agendo, come sempre, per fasi:
FASE 1: schizzi preparatori
In questa fase si dettano le basi per l'intero progetto, nella realizzazione degli schizzi non è necessaria la precisione, ne tanto meno l'accuratezza. Perché siano efficaci basta inserire le forme di base e alcuni accenni a dettagli particolari o oggetti, così da avere una base su cui poter produrre il lavoro completo.
Per questo progetto avevo molte idee su come realizzare la bambina: cartoon, realistica, stile manga o fumetto americano. Ovviamente avevo anche individuato alcuni elementi e concetti che avrei inserito comunque, qualsiasi fosse stato lo stile utilizzato.
Alla fine ho optato per uno stile cartoon/realistico, che prevedeva la realizzazione di un corpo estremante semplificato e non coerente con la realtà, ma senza rinunciare ai dettagli e alla qualità visiva tipica di un disegno prettamente realistico (cosa riscontrabile soprattutto nell'abbigliamento).
Quello sopra riportato è uno dei tanti tentativi fatti per la rappresentazione della bambina.
Alla fine, dopo essere riuscito a realizzare un disegno che soddisfacesse tutte le mie esigenze, ho creato una base anche per lo "sfondo" che, in questo caso, è formato da una sorta di piedistallo sul quale sono inseriti elementi caratteristici della scena rappresentata.
La scelta del piedistallo è stata fatta per richiamare l'idea di una statua, un oggetto reale e concreto semplicemente appoggiato su un piano.
Dopo aver scelto lo stile da utilizzare, ho realizzato i restanti tre schizzi.
FASE 2: Colore e dettagli
Una volta terminati tutti gli schizzi, il passo successivo è l'aggiunta del colore, andando a creare tutti i piccoli dettagli dovuti al materiale, alla luce, all'età, all'atmosfera ecc..
In questa fase ho preferito concentrarmi su un singolo pezzo per volta, raggiungendo ogni volta l'effetto finale per ogni parte creata.
Ovviamente alcune cose (come le luci) vanno per forza inserite alla fine, poiché solo a lavoro terminato è possibile stabilire in che modo la luce colpirà i diversi materiali e con quale intensità.
Per la creazione della bambina ho utilizzato un pennello molto duro, anche per la realizzazione di luci e ombre. Ho preso questa decisione perché volevo che il risultato finale avesse un aspetto estremamente plastico e vivido. Per la realizzazione del piedistallo e di tutto ciò che era presente su di esso ho invece utilizzato un pennello molto morbido, che mi consentisse di gestire meglio gli effetti di luce sugli alberi e sui cespugli.
FASE 3: inserimento del testo ed impaginazione
L'ultimo step è, ovviamente, l'inserimento del testo e la gestione degli spazi.
Il testo va inserito in modo tale da rendere il più armonico possibile il suo rapporto con le illustrazioni che, col testo affianco, diventano chiare e leggibili.
Questa storia può essere vista in molti modi, io ho deciso di interpretarla in modo triste ma, proprio per questo, rappresentare la piccola Arianna come una coraggiosa e simpatica esploratrice della natura.

Ho fatto una gaffe, ho letto dall'inglese inglese dove "ceca" è stato tradotto con Czech, e infatti non capivo come mai intendessi che la storia fosse triste...
Poi ho capito che forse intendevi "cieca"!

Grazie mille, anche io ritengo che la storia sia molto bella. Anche per questo sono riuscito (o almeno spero) a rappresentare bene Arianna, in tutto il suo coraggio ed allegria. Ancora grazie, spero che anche i prossimi lavori che posterò possano piacere.
Ti sei ispirato al mito? Almeno per quanto riguarda il filo di Arianna?
Personalmente (purtroppo) non conosco il mito e non so se sia collegato alla storia, poiché il testo ci è stato consegnato dal professore. Provvederò ad informarmi per colmare questa mia lacuna.
Il mito di Arianna e Teseo è molto bello! Teseo usa un filo, così da ricordare il percorso, per liberare Arianna rinchiusa in un labirinto pronta per essere mangiata dal Minotauro! Ci troviamo sull'isola di Creta ai tempi del re Minosse! Va beh il resto te lo lascio scoprire! Ma secondo me un po' di ispirazione del tuo prof. da lì viene! Chiediglielo farai bella figura! 🤗
