Egho- This is an activity carried out in my tribe and it means entertainment. Egho is simply the act of entertaining one's guest or visitor.
Before I proceed let me briefly introduce to my tribe
I am Urhobo by the tribe. Urhobos are located in Delta state, a state in the southern part of Nigeria. And we are known for our dressing, food, and way of life.
Now back to my people's activity Egho
If a guest shows up in the home of any traditional Urhobo man or woman then the activity of Egho is going to be performed. This rite is done with four major things: A flat breakable plate, A kola nut, A bottle of dry gin (also known as ogogoro), and three dominations of money.
The flat breaking plate is laid on the table and domination of money is added (let's say #200) then the kola nut is placed on top of the money. Lower domination of money is added beside the Kolanut (let's say #100) and the guest is being told that this is their entertainment and adding the #100 is to act as a wedge to the kola nut to avoid is from rolling away. Then lower domination of money (let's say #20) is added by the entertainer or host. This lower domination of money is to cut the kola nut.
The Guest/visitor is to accept the entertainment, pray on the kola nut and break into two pieces as he and his host eat the kola nut and drink in merry.
But if the guest is an in-law to the host (if the guest is married to the host sister). After the entertainment done by the host, the guest is to entertain the host back with double the number of things the host use to entertain him. And if he can't get all the things ready at the moment, if we have to pay for the entertainer monetary. Then the host will pray for him as they both enjoy their entertainment
In the times of old before the advancement of paper money, coins or any other form of money used for entertainment. And entertaining a guest doesn't really need to be expensive. And instead of using dry gin which is an alcohol, folks have evolved to be using soft drinks especially when their guest isn't someone that takes alcohol. More than one drinks and stuffs about from Kola but like cookies are also being added when entertaining a guest in Urhobo land. But Egho can't be complete if there is no kola nut, the there donations of money and a drink (whether a dry gin or any other type of drink).
