Decades ago, these devices surely gave many people in the world the opportunity to have their first contact with a telephone, since not many could have a line at home, but today, for different reasons, much of them are not used by anyone, at least that is what happens in my country.
I have wanted to write about this topic for a long time because I have seen many public telephones victims of vandalism in the city where I live and these days I learned that at the beginning of this year 2021, the Anonymous National Telephone Company Venezuela, Cantv (state property) activated a service of free calls from public telephones.
"Dial 1882 and you will have 3 free minutes to make calls to Cantv telephones nationwide”, the company published on its official twitter account.
Since the company has not been selling phone cards for a long time, this initiative is good, right? Because if you are on the street, you run out of balance or your cell phone battery is very low, or you don't have one and you need to make a call, public telephones can still save you, of course, as long as they are working, because as I said before, many have deteriorated due to lack of maintenance and others due to the lack of awareness of the people...
One of the main reasons why public telephones fell into disuse was the arrival of cell phones and their overcrowding, which facilitated access to communication. However, there was a time here in Venezuela, not so many years ago, that the rates of public telephones were much cheaper than those of cell phones and Cantv was very successful selling telephone cards to be used in these public devices, so much so that even they became collectibles because they came with landscapes or other things typical of Venezuela.
I always had a phone card in my wallet, not only because the calls were cheap but also because I liked calling from there, it seemed attractive, cinematic, going to a public phone, picking up the handset, swiping the card and talking there from a street, square or other place while watching people go by.
Also, when I have traveled abroad, I have bought cards and the public telephone has always been a cheaper means of communicating with my family.
I did a little research on the internet to find out more about the history of the public telephone and learned that it was invented in the late 19th century in the US. Its creator was William Gray and the first was installed in a bank in Connecticut, then it became popular in that country and in the world.
Located in places such as squares, schools, hospitals, bus terminals, airports, shopping centers, streets or other public access sites, their utility is that they are available to use at any time and every day of the year.
Here in Venezuela, as I saw in official Cantv publications, the first public telephones were installed in the 1950s. At first coins were used to call, then cards that were punched with the amount used and more recently cards with a chip or magnetic stripe. There was also the possibility of making calls with a charge to destination.
Regarding the number of devices, today, according to Cantv's website, some 20,500 public telephones are active in Venezuela, a low figure if we take into account that there were more than 90,000 in 2004.
But obviously, if the company no longer sells phone cards because few people would buy them because cell phones reduced the use of public telephones, it's not profitable to maintain them and that is why they have not repaired the damaged ones. Also, the economic difficulties that the country is going through in recent years have influenced this situation.
¿siguen siendo utilizados?
Well, at least with the initiative to activate free calls, public telephones still have some life left in Venezuela, and in your country, what has happened to these devices? Are they still being used?

Thanks so much for your support @qurator and @brumest!!

Wow, great!!
Jajajaja... ¡eran parte de la libertad! Gracias por comentar :)
In Indonesia, public telephones like this are no longer functioning. Such public facilities are not well maintained here, unfortunately.
It's great if you have free calls in your country at least it really helps to communicate without having to pay more.
It's sad, it's what I read has happened in several countries with these phones... Thank you very much for commenting and for your support! :)
