Writing 1000s of words each day, just not on Hive

It's time for an update on Hive as I haven't had an active post for weeks now. I started a bigger update post as mostly my health adventure is what's occupying me and it deserves full attention and a good write-up, but the post stagnated after the first three paragraphs and is already in draft for a week now.

I just started writing a similar post in Dutch for friends and family and oh my god had I forgotten how easy it is to write in your mother tongue!

I've been writing on Steem/Hive for such a long time, and it's getting easier and easier every time I do, but when I write about a 1000 words in 15 minutes because I write in Dutch I really understand how you native English writers have it easy on this platform. The post will be a post without deadline, I just want to write it all down and cut it up in chapters whenever I'm done and share it with friends and family who might've missed me for the past few years while I was struggling to find ways to connect to the world.

Not close family and friends of course, they know how I've struggled, but those a little further apart.

Anyway.

It at least means I'm still writing, it just doesn't end up on Hive.

The other big writing project is a report I'm writing for teachers in secondary education that will have to deal with mostly distance/online/blended education from the new year on, something they're not used to, so I'm doing a literature search in the scientific databases to find what we know about blended/hybrid learnign and how they can prepare for the new year.

It's fun but doesn't leave much writing room for other, shorter stuff.

Although, to be honest, this post took me about ten minutes to write, so maybe I'm underestimating what's possible :-)

I'm trying to be a little more communicative about my fiber art adventures on Instagram, so if you want to follow along just subscribe to that 'channel' :-) It's not content I'd personally share on Hive either, but maybe I should think about a monthly summary post or something like that.

What do you think?

And oh, just to close off with a random thought... What a change would it be if shorter/shit posts would be more accepted on Hive. I wouldn't have felt like I had to ignore Hive for weeks, instead would've posted a few more random updates.

Could be in my head of course and maybe I should've just done so.

Still learning.

Cheers. Hope you enjoyed my rambling post that really doesn't say that much. I'm writing. A LOT. I promise. Just need to find ways to get back on Hive again. Some communities that do more random posting I'm missing out on maybe?

Picture was taken yesterday - such a Dutch thing to put whole sceneries like this in the window - but very vintage ones like these are really only done by elderly people from a certain generation so I'll see these less and less and less - worth photographing I thought.

Sort:

Enjoyed reading your thoughts and I must say I admire everyone who is able to write so well in English as a second language — people often say that having English as a mother tongue is a great advantage, and yes, that may be so in terms of convenience — however, it also often leads to sloth when it comes to learning other languages, particularly in the US.

I could relate to a bit of the underlying, well, frustration may be too strong a word, but discomfort at working hard on many things behind-the-scenes and not quite knowing how to share it on Hive or elsewhere... so that it appears we aren't doing much of anything, when actually it is a very active period of life!

For me, that is often in the form of working on musical demos, building tracks, writing lyrics, recording basic building blocks... for many, many hours, but still often ending up with something seeming less-than-shareworthy.

Of course, I do think a lot of the whole dilemma is psychological and we often find, as you seemed to here, that it is actually relatively effortless to do something we've been putting off or agonizing over.

When it comes to short-form content on HIVE... the consensus among a diverse crowd of different sorts seems to me to be that it is totally accepted. I have realized that it's actually myself that has particular standards for what I consider to be a "substantial post." If I post something more casual than that, usually people are just happy to hear something. Blasted internal critic!

Anyway, this comment is already pretty long, so I'll leave it at that. Hope you have a great day and thanks for providing the impetus for me to reflect a bit further. :-)

thanks for providing the impetus for me to reflect a bit further

Impetus! It's words like that - I absolutely understand and even know the word but I would never be able to come up with those during writing. I have a University degree and in Dutch I'm definitely able to add more nuance to my sentences because I just have a bigger vocabulary - I think that's a big part of my struggle when writing in English, it just never feels like I can express myself at the level I can think at, if that makes sense.

Anyway, love your comment and comments like that are why I write at all - it's lovely to express some thoughts and start a conversation or have someone else express their thoughts in reaction. I can also definitely understand your 'frustration' with sharing content - especially music is pretty much invisible until it's done or you've recorded a clip, so what to share about the extensive process in the meanwhile?

I'm also jealous on all those Instagram posts where people just share their process on some art project and it gets 1000s of likes because looking at 'hands at work' is just so addictive :-)

Thanks for sharing, and I'll try to beat my own standards and post more short-form content on Hive, hope you'll find a way too <3

English may be my native tongue, but I'm still incredibly slow at writing it down. I think you may have written this quicker than I could have! 🤣

Lol! Yes, I might have generalized big time, I absolutely know that writing isn't for everyone and writing in your native tongue doesn't solve everything. I've been lucky to pick up on languages in general quite easily and quick :-)

Yes, well done to all writing in their non-native tongue!

I'm a slow thinker and typist, writing in another language doesn't bare thinking about.

Looking forward to the health update, I hope you've unlocked some secrets :)

Hehe - so no abhunodostresquatrocinqo for posts in Spanish then? :D

Yes, I've unlocked a lot of secrets, and in a very short time too! It's mostly impacting sleep and stress levels for now, but the impact of that is huge on how I feel during the day. I guess that's what's blocking the write-up, so much is happening in such a short time, I feel like I can write a book already :D

Well I was wondering myself you seem active, but also not posting and my guess was you had maybe another project. Well it can be enjoyable to write when you're not under pressure to deliver quickly. Do take your time though and enjoy writing and hopefully in the future mini blogging wouldn't be a problem on hive. Anyways see you soon cuz I know it's only a matter of time. Cheers!

:-) Yes, writing without deadline or expectations is fun! For now the story is just open on my laptop and everytime I feel like adding to it I'm doing so :-) Hope to share it on here as well one day. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! :-)

You know short story's aren't shit posts that's one. Second it's more seo friendly but if you have a personal blog then it shouldn't matter. The solution for that is buzz the Facebook on hive with the buzz coin. So @peakd make it please. You are also not very mobile im not either they think it is fibromialgy my muscles are in pain with the slightest movement. So all my projects are slowed down and I'm not working now for 2.5 months. My pain is now also in my hands and arms i am waiting to get the same in my heart. Because it is also a muscle. Pumping 24hours a day.

Try buying an earth sheet for your bed it helps also the doctor wo muscle tazer it helps also with your pain. I had to wash mine and couldn't get out of bed anymore when I didn't use it. But it's your decision I don't want to muddle with your life. Helping is what I allways wanted to do. 😃

Sorry to hear you're still in so much pain @hans001! I never heard of the earth sheet but will look into it. I'm personally looking into food/supplements for my health and it already seems to do a lot for my sleep and stress levels, and it's only the beginning so I'm expecting good things to come from it.

Although, to be honest, this post took me about ten minutes to write, so maybe I'm underestimating what's possible

Yes you’re underestimating what’s possible.

I thinking of writing 50 words Hive post every day.. So you can join me

50 words is very doable :-) I personally don't like daily challenges but I can see how it would work for many :-) Enjoy!

First I think you do an excellent job writing in English, me I only have one option, American English, I never took the time nor had the desire to really learn a second language. I have never been a traveler, even though I love seeing pictures and videos from other places.

Short form posting is doing much better on Hive, not as much resistance or complaining about them, that is good. I think there is room on Hive for all manner of postings.

Good to hear there's more acceptance of short-form posting now, maybe I'm stuck in my bubble and not noticing it :D And thank you for the nice words regarding my English! I know I'm not doing that bad at all, but I also know I'm even better at expressing myself in my own language, still :-)

Wonderful to hear that you're writing! I'm constantly in awe of people who can master more than one language (yes, you've mastered English). I love that you're enjoying writing in your mother tongue. I think shorter posts are fine on Hive... I think it's better to do a shorter post than to disappear completely, but I agree it would be nice if it was less frowned upon by some. I haven't posted in months, mostly because I've been writing novels and focused on other things, but perhaps a short post would be less intimidating and time consuming... Regardless, it's always good to hear from you, my sister across the sea. :)

Hello lovely @katrina-ariel! Yes, there's a bit of magic involved in writing in my own language, Dutch has less words than English but I know more of them :D So there's more flow in my sentences and it's easier for me to find synonyms, sometimes hard for me in English which makes me feel I write with limited vocabulary. But hey, I'm not complaining, I realize even native English writers are struggling more than me with writing posts, so...

I'm super happy you're writing so much! Even though it doesn't end up on Hive. Sometimes you find a flow and you just need to follow it <3 Hugs to you!

i wanted to tell on you, that you are cheating hive with other social networks but you admitted :D

you should do updates. and they should be as long or short as you think they should.

Hahaha - tell on me?! :D I don't hide my cheating, I more or less hope we will learn from it, because as long as 'other social media' is still attractive we're missing something on Hive :D

Anyway, I really will try to get back to shorter posts again, I did so in the beginning and I enjoyed it - don't know exactly where I lost it.

i wanted to say "what's up" on instagram, but i don't usually say what is up on instagram comments :D

I think it was that mentality that we learned when we came here, we are earning this crypto, we have to do more :)

Do what you need to do ... we'll be glad to read you rambling about it when you have time!

:D Thanks!

I was wondering where you have been...
I just gave you an insta-follow with my "katycrete' account :) Look forward to your next update!

Thanks a lot for the follow @katerinaramm! The goal is to not have to follow me on Insta anymore because everything gets posted here or course :D Cheers!

Nice to see you back

Thank you @ladyfont! :-)

I understand what you say about writing in your mothers tongue.
I sometimes have to translate it from Danish into English because I can't come up with the word :D
Happens sometime, not often tho :D

Hahaha - that doesn't happen to me often either but I do often feel like there could be a better alternative word while writing, I don't know so many synonyms so feel stuck using the same words over and over :-) Didn't know you spoke Danish @cwow2, are you living in Denmark?

Yes! Better alternative for sure, I get that aswell xD
And sometimes I can't spelled the word correct and spents a few minutes googling it correct :p

Yes, A Dane living in Denmark, Copenhagen :D

I love the photograph, firstly. Second I enjoy your ramblings because I don't feel so alone in my thoughts as I haven't been on here as much as I like. Unlike you I'm not writing thousands of words on another site... So you're one up on me there. I absolutely love the scarves on your Instagram page.

:-) Glad you like the photo and the ramblings! It's soothing to read someone feels a little bit the same, I agree :-) Thank you so much for following me on Instagram! I need to post more scarves but I'm trying to figure out how to use Instagram as a creative artist still, always used to use it as a photographer only.

I will follow back on my personal account, you'll see me pop up :-) Cheers!

Thank you 💕 It's nice to meet you!

Glad you do, I believe writing it does help us coop with difficult aspects of life. Miss you 🤗🤗🤗

Yes, writing is an amazing tool for keeping the psyche healthy! I miss you too @teodora! I hope you're doing well and are healthy and happy as can be expected in these weird times <3

i myself wondered about what can i write. i figured out self-improvement might be a good niche. After 12 years of school we don't know the information we find in self-improvement books. So this kind of information might be a good direction for our content.

How's the new normal going?

I don't believe that I have to tell you that you are incapable to shit-post. You can come up with something way better than half of the current hive posts even as you wait a bridge that had opened :)

I am really looking forward to hear about your health, I hope everything is going well. You always have my thoughts and my best wishes!

:D Thank you as always @fotostef! You're always in my thoughts too! Next post will be about my health, I promise :-)

What a change would it be if shorter/shit posts would be more accepted on Hive.

This is the issue with the curation trail system; you feel like you have to keep up your quality to deserve the votes which are coming if you have a reputation.

It's not all bad as it does in turn keep the quality up; perhaps we need a 2nd shitpost account. Like people often have a 2nd behind the scene Instagram page to maintain the quality of their primary page.
