Otto Wagner: St. Leopold's Church at Steinhof. At the beginning of the 20th century, Otto Wagner created a masterpiece in the form of the Kirche am Steinhof, which is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Jugendstil period. The former institutional church with its gilded dome, visible from afar, is enthroned on a slope in the western part of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) above the extensive grounds of the former psychiatric hospital of the City of Vienna.

Client for the construction and furnishing of St. Leopold's Church at Steinhof was not a church institution, but the City of Vienna, which gave Wagner a certain amount of freedom in the architectural design. Although Wagner adapted to the traditions of church building, especially through the dome, he also succeeded in positioning modernism in the sacred area. The ground-breaking ceremony took place in 1905, after only two years of construction, the Catholic Church was consecrated in October 1907.
Auftraggeber für den Bau und die Ausstattung der Kirche am Steinhof war keine kirchliche Institution, sondern die Stadt Wien, die Wagner einen gewissen Freiraum in der architektonischen Ausgestaltung gewährte. Zwar passte sich Wagner, vor allem durch die Kuppel, an die Traditionen des Kirchenbaues an, es gelang ihm jedoch auch, die Moderne im sakralen Bereich zu positionierten. Der Spatenstich erfolgte 1905. Bereits nach zwei Jahren Bauzeit wurde die römisch-katholische Kirche im Oktober 1907 eingeweiht.
Above a base of natural stone, the facade of the dome-vaulted central plan building is clad with easy-care and weather-resistant marble slabs fixed with copper bolts. The dome was covered with rabbeted, originally gilded copper plates.
Über einem Sockel aus Natursteinen ist die Fassade des kuppelüberwölbten Zentralbaus mit pflegeleichten und witterungsbeständigen Marmorplatten verkleidet, die mit Kupferbolzen befestigt sind. Die Kuppel wurde mit gefalzten, ursprünglich vergoldeten Kupferplatten gedeckt.
The building is entered through a representative portico which canopy is decorated with gilded forms. The Christian symbols of the cross and wreath are also found in a frieze on the facade.
Das Gebäude wird über eine repräsentative Säulenvorhalle betreten, dessen Vordach mit vergoldeten Formen geschmückt ist. Die christlichen Symbole des Kreuzes und des Kranzes finden sich auch in einem Fries an der Fassade wieder.
The design for the four praying angel figures on the entrance columns was created by the sculptor Othmar Schimkowitz.

The bright interior is kept in white and gold, strong color accents are used to direct the view to the altar area.

The design of the mosaic picture behind the high altar was created by Remigius Geyling. A richly decorated canopy hangs above the altar structure.

As early as 1899, Otto Wagner pleaded for manageability, economy and hygiene in sacred buildings in his study "Die Moderne im Kirchenbau" (Modernity in Church Construction). The implementation of his ideas in the church at Steinhof was almost revolutionary in terms of hygiene and care for the mentally ill. For example, he replaced the holy water basin with standing water with a dispenser from which the consecrated water dripped. This was to prevent infections, but also undue "splashing around".
Bereits 1899 plädierte Otto Wagner in der Studie "Die Moderne im Kirchenbau" für Überschaubarkeit, Ökonomie und Hygiene im Sakralbau. Die Umsetzung seiner Vorstellungen in der Kirche am Steinhof war in Bezug auf Hygiene und Versorgung der psychisch Kranken seinerzeit nahezu revolutionär. So ersetzte er das Weihwasserbecken mit stehendem Gewässer durch einen Spender, aus dem das geweihte Wasser tröpfelte. Dadurch sollten Infektionen, aber auch ungebührliches "Pritscheln" verhindert werden.
The tiled floor drops down to the altar to ensure a good view from the back rows as well. Short pews with rounded corners enabled the nurses to intervene quickly in case of emergency and reduced the risk of injury. The pews and open confessionals were fitted with copper fittings on the floor for easy cleaning. A doctor's room, a first aid room and toilets were also installed.
Um den Patienten auch aus den hinteren Reihen eine gute Sicht zu gewährleisten, fällt der geflieste Boden zum Altar hin ab. Kurze Betstühle mit abgerundeten Ecken ermöglichten ein rasches Eingreifen der Pfleger im Notfall und verminderten die Verletzungsgefahr. Die Kirchenbänke und die offenen Beichtstühle wurden am Boden zwecks einfacher Reinigung mit Kupferbeschlägen versehen. Außerdem wurden ein Arztzimmer, ein Erste-Hilfe-Raum und Toiletten eingebaut.
For safety reasons, the pulpit can only be reached via stairs from the sacristy. Therefore it was just like the gallery not accessible to patients.

Worth seeing are also the glass mosaic windows in Tiffany style, designed by Koloman Moser, representing the seven works of spiritual and bodily mercy.

The construction of the church was viewed with skepticism by the church authorities and followed with many objections. Wagner's concept of a contemporary church building with plenty of light, practicality and comfort as well as the use of reinforced concrete, copper, glass and thin marble slabs met with incomprehension and were dismissed as blasphemous. Only far from the city center and due to the fact that this was an institutional church for the "mentally ill", one let the architect grant.
Die Errichtung des Gotteshauses wurde von den kirchlichen Behörden mit Skepsis gesehen und mit vielen Einsprüchen verfolgt. Wagners Konzept eines zeitgemäßen Kirchengebäudes mit viel Licht, Zweckdienlichkeit und Komfort sowie der Einsatz von armiertem Beton, Kupfer, Glas und dünnen Marmorplatten stießen auf Unverständnis und wurden als gotteslästerlich abgetan. Nur fernab des Stadtzentrums und aufgrund des Umstandes, dass es sich hierbei um eine Anstaltskirche für "Geisteskranke" handelte, ließ man den Architekten gewähren.
Die Kirche am Steinhof wurde als Anstaltskirche für die Patienten der damaligen "Nervenheilanstalt Steinhof" gebaut. Bei der Planung ließ sich Wagner von Ärzten und Pflegekräften des Spitals beraten, um die besonderen Bedürfnisse der nerven- und geisteskranken Patienten zu berücksichtigen. Viele Zeitgenossen stießen sich am baulichen Konzept, das für den Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts außerordentlich fortschrittlich war. Beispielsweise hat Wagner bereits vor über 110 Jahren in der Kirche am Steinhof realisiert, was erst jetzt, in Zeiten von Corona, in Kirchen aktuell ist. Nämlich aus hygienischen Gründen auf das geweihte Wasser in den Becken zu verzichten. Zum Teil werden bereits kontaktlose Weihwasserspender eingesetzt.
Ich weiß nicht, ob sich Wagner beim Entwurf der Kirche von einer Moschee inspirieren ließ. Aber du hast recht, ohne die christlichen Symbole könnte es durchaus auch eine Moschee sein.

Every week you give me a new treat to enjoy. This week I was especially intrigued by Wagner's dedication to hygiene. Also, I was fascinated by the fact that he designed Kirche am Steinhof to serve a mentally ill population.
I can't tell you how affected I am by this. Wagner has a fan here. Not only is his architecture stunning and functional, but it is compassionate--if I can use such a term in relation to buildings.
It seems I've written a small book on many subjects. One of them was Florence Nightingale. I was struck in your description of Wagner's hygiene planning with how this is consistent with the plans suggested by Nightingale. She didn't really understand germ theory, but nonetheless advocated for washing, open spaces, fresh air. She redesigned hospitals and wrote a book for women explaining how they could keep their homes clean and thus keep illness at bay.
I've read up a bit on Wagner since last night (when I first saw your blog), and will read again tonight. Who knows? There might be another small book in it :)

Otto Wagner was a visionary who was far ahead of his time. In his 1896 paper "Modern Architecture" (modern architecture), Wagner for the first time established a direct connection between artistic practice and hygienic standards. For him, comfort and comprehensive cleanliness were an essential condition regarding the architecture of the coming 20th century.
You write about "compassionate" architecture. Perhaps also following detail underlines the fact that Wagner tried to put himself in the mind of the patients for whom he built this church. Thus, apart from the cross at the altar, no motives of suffering can be found in the church. No depictions of martyrs or the suffering of Jesus Christ, for fear that the sometimes violent depictions might provoke aggression in the patients.
Thanks for the reference to Florence Nightingale. I knew her by name, but I've only now started to deal with her story. A fascinating personality! Did you published your book and can one buy it somewhere online? A book on Otto Wagner by you would be awesome. I already know that I would love it, as you are an excellent researcher and author.

Yes, August/September is wonderful here. I love this time of year most, although there is a certain poignancy to it.
