So I recently shared a very strange coin in the silvergoldstackers discord,
Here are 2 Canadian silver dimes, they are supposed to be 80% silver however I stumbled on one that seemed to be more pure.
How do I know you may ask, well I used some metal verification test, this one dime passes the sterling(92.5% silver) test on my sigma metal verifier, the other Canadian silver dimes I tried do not as you can see below.
Does it mean this coin is 92.5% silver ? Not necessarily metal verification is actually not that simple and it would not be wise to trust just one test.
And so I tested this strange dime with it counter part and it appears to be sliding down slower potentially suggesting it actually more pure but like I mentioned using multiple test is a way to be more sure.
I got really exited thinking I may have a one of a kind coin, did a sterling silver blank from before 1920 somehow got introduced into a batch of 80% silver ?
Well the next step was to take it to a coin shop to try their XRF machine, and ... the XRF got a reading of 85% still more pure than it should be but not sterling.
Does this mean the coin is 85% unfortunately not the XRF test is not a 100% especially with one reading, one can do multiple readings and then averaging them out to get the most accurate reading you can with the machine.
So yes the coin is more pure than it should be but the person at the shop said they already discovered this before and looked into it and apparently the mint had a process in the manufacturing where they do some sort of acid bath that removed some copper from the outer layers making it more pure, they said they found some 80% silver reading as high as 90% pure.
Was a bit of a bummer but it wasn't a total waste I learned all this and also at the time of my visit the XRF technician was in calibrating their machine so we all got to talk about metal verification and I learned a fair bit and got some ideas about making a better machine.

It's the same with ship wreck silver coins that have been recovered from the oceans and seas. Over time the salt water electrolyticaly leeches the copper from the coins leaving the less reactive silver behind therefore often reading purer than before.

The magnet slide test really helps you see the difference since the higher silver purity dime slides quite a bit slower. That's interesting they gave them an acid bath and it actually ended up producing higher purity than 80%. Very cool!
