The architectural structure I chose to participate in the contest is the Basilica of Nuestra Señora Del Valle Google map , located in the state of Nueva Esparta in the north of my beloved country Venezuela.

As I have commented in previous posts, I am a fan of old buildings with imposing and striking architecture. I also like to collect pictures of old churches. That is why I could not fail to participate in this contest.

I have already published some cathedrals and basilicas of the city of Lima, where I have been living for three years. However, as one of the guidelines of the contest is that the structure must be from our place of origin, I took the opportunity to share the beauty of this beautiful and iconic church of my country.

This basilica houses the image of the Virgen del Valle, patron saint of all eastern Venezuela. Thousands of devotees visit this sanctuary throughout the year, but especially during the first week of September, when the festivities in honor of the Virgin are celebrated. Many of these people travel from all parts of the country to visit the Virgin and bring offerings for the miracles received.

The place where the church is located is called the Valley of the Holy Spirit, hence the Virgin is known as Our Lady of the Valley.
The Virgin is the patroness and protector of fishermen and the Venezuelan navy. She is very loved and venerated by the entire population of the east, especially in the areas near the sea.

The story goes that the image of the Virgin was originally located on the island of Cubagua. During the time of the conquest, the Spaniards founded the old city of Nueva Cadiz on the island of Cubagua and asked Spain for an image of the Virgin to place the island under her protection.

This image arrived to the island in 1530, however, ten years later a tidal wave destroyed the city of Nueva Cadiz; the image was saved and remained intact but the inhabitants of the island decided to move it to the Valley of the Holy Spirit and house it in a small church that years later would become this beautiful structure named Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Valley by Pope John Paul II in 1995.

At first glance we can see a very beautiful and delicate structure ideal for housing the image of the Blessed Virgin. This delicate aspect has to do with its neo-Gothic style popular in the sixteenth century. Among the most relevant characteristics of Gothic architecture are verticality and luminosity. Buildings that tend to have very high towers and that in the symbolic sense have to do with the idea of reaching the sky. Likewise, very luminous interior spaces where large and colorful stained glass windows prevail. Aspects that are clearly observed in this structure.

Although the exterior of the temple looks very large and striking, the interior is small and has a very different distribution to what we are used to seeing in a church. Its floor plan is in the shape of a cross.
It has a main entrance framed by two very tall and pointed towers. It also has entrances on the sides. The interior is divided by arches called ogival. In the central part there is a dome with large and beautiful stained glass windows. The image of the Virgin is located at the top of the central dome.

At the back of the church there is a museum where many of the most incredible offerings offered to the Virgin are kept, as well as some objects that are part of the history and culture of the people of the Valley.

Saludos.

In Venezuela they say that if you travel to Margarita Island and do not go to the Valley to visit the Virgin it is as if you had not gone. That is exactly what had happened to me. I had traveled twice to the island and had not been able to go to the Valley.

In 2018, three months before I left my country, my sister invited my mother and me to spend a few days on Margarita Island as a gift for Mother's Day.

We had a wonderful and unforgettable trip, in which we were able to visit amazing places. One of them was the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Valle. El Valle is a very small town with a very pleasant climate and very friendly inhabitants, proud of the treasure they have in their town.

The feeling of peace inside the temple is indescribable. It was a wonderful experience that I had the opportunity to live with my sister and my mother that I will never forget. This was the last trip we made together before leaving my country. I promised the Virgin that when I return to Venezuela I will visit her in the company of my children whom I will consecrate to her protection and care.

For all these reasons and many more this architectural structure has a very special connotation and emotional meaning for me and I am happy to be able to share it with you through this publication.

Thank you for taking the time to read. May God and Our Lady of the valley protect you. Greetings.

Hello, please excuse me. You are absolutely right. My comment was:

"My beloved virgin of the Valley (in Venezuela we call her "Vallita") and her beautiful house giving her parishioners a warm welcome with its open doors, its imposing architecture, its impeccable façade and there inside, at the end is she, Vallita, beautiful and attentive to your requests.... Beautiful pictures!"

Sorry for that, I will take it into account. I will add a translation to my comments. Thank you.

This image arrived to the island in 1530

Wow, it is a pretty old image, everyone must have an emotional connection to the image whenever a mass is held.

Yes you are right, people in the Island feel a great and special conenection with the h image. Thanks so much for passing by.

You're welcome (^_^)

Hello @kattycrochet. The profound origins of the Basilica of Nuestra Señora Del Valle are quite interesting. Not only is the landmark significant in its cultural and historical aspects, but its religious roots are much deeper due to the Spanish influence on the island of Cubagua during ancient times. It's certainly a great blessing that the Holy Statue of the Virgin was not damaged during that natural disaster until she finally found a home in this renowned neo-Gothic-styled church which attracts plenty of faithful followers until today. No wonder lots of Venezuelans are emotionally linked to this sacred building.

Thank you for participating in the OCD Community Boost Contest for Architecture+Design! Superb post! 😊

Thanks a lot for taking the time for reading my post. It was a pleassure for me to take about my country and religious culture.

Saludos y bendiciones.

Hi @purrix, thank you so much for stopping by to read my post. It certainly is a beautiful and impeccable building. The interior of the church is very beautiful as well and of course the image of Our Lady is gorgeous. Greetings and blessings.

How pretty, you look thinner in those pictures. I thought you were chubbier, hehehehe .... unfortunately I don't know that basilica, when I was in Margarita I didn't have much money to pay the cab fare there.

Hi Caro, I'm actually chubbier, but all my life I've been very thin. Well, to move around and visit beautiful and traditional places on the island it is better to go by car because everything is very expensive.

I must confess, I love the design of the church. It’s really beautiful.

In my country, one of the things that attract people to a church is how they are built. So one can say the most attractive church can have more members.

Certainly churches with this type of structure attract a lot of attention and more people attend. However, what is really important is not the facade or the architectural design, what is important is the faith of the people.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting my post. Greetings.

Thanks a lot for passing by a leave a comment, I really liked to write this post.

Wow, considering it's age, it looks like it is brand new!

Although I am not religious, I too just LOVE old, historical building and especially churches simply because of the ornate and intricate beauty of them. It's like many of them are as exquisite as lace.

Nice post.

Thanks so much. I really like to collect photographies of acient churches.

Yes, I would like that too, but our churches over here are only just over 200yrs old and they are all pretty much the same architecture, but yours over there are so much more special due to their age, history, stories and architecture, so I can't wait to get over there one day to have a look myself!
