Recently, I have been writing on application of green architecture as a means to mitigate energy consumption strategy in urban cities, you can browse through my blog to read more about it. Today, we will travel across the globe and explore through some fascinating examples of green building architecture and what specific aspect of green architecture did they considered most in their building design architecture.
The Crystal, London, United Kingdom
One of the urban sustainable projects that has been attracting a lot of visitors every year is The Crystal Building, in London city. The aspect of green architecture being implemented are discussed below:
- Integrating waste reduction mechanism
The building consider recycling of water by collecting the rainwater directly through the roof as it is noticeable from its structure (this is usually called rainwater harvesting), the sewage will be treated and the recycled water will be purified for drinking.
- Application of of renewable energy
Another aspect of green architecture being implemented along with waste reduction mechanism in the Crystal Building is the application of solar panel throughout the entire building as a means of electricity, during the day light, the direct sunlight is being used to light up the entire building and switch to photovoltaic solar panels during the night to light up the entire building.
- Window glazing design
The Crystal Building considered window glazing design as it can be seen from its design, it offers many benefits such as low energy consumption, high rate of heat transfer and allow daylight ray directly into the building.
Phipps’ Center For Sustainable Landscapes, Pittsburgh, USA
Yes. we are in America again, at Phipps’ Center For Sustainable Landscapes. Phipps’ Center implemented the following aspect of green architecture:
- Application of of renewable energy
Phipps’ Center For Sustainable Landscapes also made use of wind, solar and geothermal energy as a means of electricity within the buildings.
- Integrating waste reduction mechanism
The building was built in such a way that the roof can also collect rainwater directly after which, it will then be recycled and processed for use, thus eliminating the need to depend on urban water. It also has green roof with a lot of garden that is walk able, especially for the visitors.
Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, Sisaket, Thailand
Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, Sisaket is popularly known as the Temple of a Million Bottles. let's discuss some of the green architecture used in designing the temple.
- Integrating waste reduction mechanism
The building was built with bottle beer of about 1.5 millions as it can be seen from the image shown above, in an attempt to reduce environmental pollution resulting from littered bottle beer, the community in 1984, persuaded both the beer sellers and the residents to donate their empty containers and was later used to build the temple for almost two years. The building has several comfortable rooms built with a mixture of the brown local Chang beer bottles and green Heineken bottles is still existing till now.
Note: this article only explored through selected three fascinating and high rated green buildings across the world, especially those area of green architecture that I have discussed previously, there are several other fascinating and high rated green architecture out there.
