**MOON CACTUS** Shadow Hunters/SMASh Contest-Round 230

in Shadow Hunters2 years ago

Hello to all my friends in the #shadowhunter community. I have been out and about the last few days visiting family in both New York and New Jersey. It was great catching up on family doings, seems everyone we visited had projects in the works. They say the apple doesn't fall from the tree and my fam's tree is growing all the time. These are my happiest moments.

Fortunately, the day before we left, I went shadow hunting. Stepped outside my door and biff, there it was, my moon cactus, along with the baby fawn and a succulent.

I thought these shadows were the perfect entry in the shadow hunts contest for this round, 2 hundred and 30. That's 230!! Amazing stats.

Moon cacti require very little water. They must be allowed to dry out completely, yet a deep watering is required every 2-4 weeks depending on the weather. These plants are native to South America and enjoy an acidic ph of 5.5 to 7.0. Sometimes these cacti are called Ruby Ball also, but they really are two different cacti grafted together.

"The moon cactus is a grafted specimen that is almost always grown as a potted plant rather than a garden specimen. The colorful red, orange, or yellow top (the scion) is Gymnocalycium mihanovichii. The lower green cactus host portion can be any number of species but is usually a Hylocereus cactus. It becomes known as a moon cactus when the pieces are joined. The main job of the lower cactus is to display the Gymnocalycium at an advantageous height. These plants rarely last more than a few years, since the upper scion and the lower rootstock portions grow at different rates, which eventually destroys the graft union between the two sections. However, it is not a difficult matter to separate the scion and graft it onto a new rootstock cactus. The best seasons for planting are spring or summer when faster growth is favored."

I always kill those cute little guys with kindness! They certainly cast great Shadows. Thanks for entering the shadow contest again 🌞

Good morning @melinda010100 hope this finds you well and happy. We just got back from visiting the family, my oldest grandchild Ava graduated 8th grade and of course a big celebration was in order, brought the whole family plus friends into town. It was a wonderful reunion. Lots of food, fun and splashing in the pool. PHEW! This ole gal is happily exhausted. hehe

I was so glad I snapped a few shadows before we left, it motivated me to join the fun this week in #shadowhunters. Happy to hear from you.
Enjoy your day my friend.

Graduations are always great excuses for a party! My youngest grandson graduated from high school this year. These kids are growing up. He stopped by less evening with a girl and I was quite pleased that he wanted to introduce her to me. She was delightful. He leaves for University in 2 weeks. His sister still has two years of high school left but then they will all be fast approaching adulthood. Certainly makes me feel ancient!

YES!

I love how those cactus flower in different colours. Then, you can't even tell in the shadow realm!

Scions huh? Learn something new every day!

OMG I am "beerologist approved"? What an honor!!😎

Hello there @zekepickleman, always a pleasure when you stop by. So you like those moon cactus huh? I think they are so cool looking; I have had them on and off for years, but because they are a grafted moon, they only last a few years. I had a giant Senita cactus we got for a wedding gift, it lasted over 20 years. it had to be 6' tall.
This cactus can grow up to 15' tall and to buy a 1 and half foot cutting is $75, dang had I known back then, I would have been slicing and dicing that prickly thing. 😄

I hope you have a great week, now is it 5pm yet?

really nice shadows

Greetings @sammy00 happy you liked my shadows, those moon cactus are really beautiful, I got lucky capturing the shadow. Thanks for your comment.
Have a beautiful day.

Love the cacti, my husband has been planning to grow his own cacti soon, sad to say he scammed on the seeds he bought online (they never germinated). For sure my husband will love these photos if he sees them.

Good morning @chenee, bummer the seeds didn't work, they aren't cheap to buy. Maybe try buying a small cactus, then take slips of the roots and put them in water to root, then plant them in dirt. Remember once rooted in soil, do not over water them.

Thanks for dropping by good luck with growing.

Good afternoon @farm-mom, thank you for the information and I will tell my husband about what you have said.

Love the new banner!

Those have such cool flowers! I love the shadows they throw off! I do not grow cactus! I had enough of them out west and I have never had much luck with them, but, these are pretty awesome!

Good luck!

Hi there Denise, I saw those ponies again, thanks for sharing that. It's on my bucket list to see them swim.

The moon cactus are such pretty plants, I love that I can forget about them for a while, and they still look great.

@dswigle I hope this finds you well and happy.
Love and peace!

It does! :)

I think they are beautiful, but, for some reason, they don't like me and die a rather slow death. I try to give them away before too long!

I hope you do get to see those ponies in person. I think you would like it!

Nice and beautiful shadow of flowers

how are you dear friend @farm-mom good afternoon
