Broken Monsters / Book Review [Eng - Esp]

in Hive Book Club2 years ago

I had a long time without writing a book review, although I have several pending to review, it was not until a few days ago that I was encouraged to write this post, after seeing the miniseries adaptation of another book by author Lauren Beukes.

Broken Monsters was the first novel I read by Lauren Beukes, that was in 2017 or 2018, I don't remember exactly the year. I had never read any of her other works and it was through this novel that I discovered this writer.

I am a fan of thrillers and stories with criminal plots. Fiction novels with police investigations and murderers are among my favorites and this author hooked me immediately with this novel. I remember when I finished reading it, I thought it was good enough to be adapted into a movie or miniseries.

Besides, in the part of the book where the author's details were given, it said that she had experience as a scriptwriter in television in her country. I never doubted that sooner or later some production company would see the potential of the book and acquire the rights to take it to the screen.

Another thing I did was to look for the writer's previous works, but unfortunately, at that time, I could not get them all in my native language. I was only able to get Shining Girls, whose story I also loved, where there were already the elements that I would also use in Broken Monsters: criminal investigation, serial killer and a touch of science fiction.

To my surprise, a few months ago I came across the trailer of the adaptation of the novel Shining Girls, with Elizabeth Mosss as the main character and I finished watching the mini-series a few weeks ago and made a review of it which you can read in this link. In that post I made a small comparison with the book and the changes made with respect to the original work. I was very satisfied with that adaptation and I am absolutely sure that we will soon see an adaptation of Broken Monsters. I haven't looked for any news on the internet, I want to be surprised when it becomes a reality, I just wish they would make an adaptation worth watching.

To enjoy Broken Monster, just like Shining Girls, it's best not to break down the plot too much, that's why I've prepared my own explanation of the plot, without spoilers. So don't worry, you can read the whole post, I won't give information that will ruin the reading of the novel.

What is the plot?

The lives of a group of people with nothing in common converge in the dilapidated city of Detroit. Clayton Broom, an artist who has been abandoned by the woman he loves and who has a child that could be his. Jonno, a journalist looking for a fresh start in the city to forget his past and falls in love with Jenefer, a DJ who knows all about the city's undergorund movement. Thomas Keen aka TK, an ex-con who along with another homeless man named Ramon are in charge of looting the houses that are evicted due to the real estate crisis and finally homicide detective Gabriella Versado with her daughter Layla, with whom she has a difficult relationship after the divorce. Each character must carry the weight of his or her past and it all begins with a horrifying discovery, a never-before-seen crime that seems to be carried out by a mind too disturbed. How do all these characters fit into that fact? What is their relationship? Who is the monster of Detroit that is committing these horrendous murders? What will be the fate of each of them? You have to read the book to find the answers....

The City

The setting of the story in Detroit, during one of the many times of crisis it has suffered, is a total success, the writer takes us to that ruined city, both socially and economically. I do not know Detroit, but years ago I read several reports of the strong debacle suffered by the whole city. What was once the pride of a country, a very important city for the automobile production industry, became a city full of poverty and one of the most dangerous in the country.

Detroit stands as one more character where that group of characters, mostly losers, seem trapped there, as the last survivors of that concrete jumble that despite the blows that fate has given it throughout its history, refuses to die and only in a completely collapsed place, where the vileness of man dominates the streets, where there are many urban legends, is able to emerge a force of evil, like the Detroit Monster.

Social networks

The deterioration of a city that was a symbol of success is not the only social aspect addressed in the novel. The author takes the opportunity to launch a small criticism of our use of social networks, which will play a relevant role in the development of the story. Not only in the main plot, they will also be relevant in the construction and resolution of some secondary plots of Layla and her friend Cas, who being the youngest characters are the ones who will have more contact with the Internet and social networks. Even an abuse subplot is skillfully raised and although at first it seems superfluous, it ends up complementing the novel, because the writer's idea is to show a society in total decadence.

Art

We will get to know a facet of the city unknown to those of us who live in that country. The whole alternative movement of artists, the underground movement and everything that has to do with the way that many have chosen as a method to launch a cry for creative freedom, in the midst of ruin, crime and poverty. At the end of the book, in the acknowledgements, the writer names all the people and institutions in Detroit that helped her in everything related to the art movement. This is one of the reasons I would love to see a film adaptation of the novel soon, to see how the crimes of the Detroit Monster, who makes every murder a work of art, are captured on the screen. He wants the world to see his work, to see their worst fears in them.

Who are the broken monsters?

As I finished the last page of the novel, I kept turning that question over in my head. The answer was clearly visible: everyone.

Everyone in the story is broken inside. From the artist who has been left alone and his art is not valued as in times past, to the ambitious journalist who will use social networks to obtain the coveted fame that he believes can make him forget all his failures. The perverts who use social networks to harass potential victims, the young people who commit sexual harassment and abuse, the Dj who knows she will never have a better chance in life and who lives in a world of lies, and the policemen who seem immune to the pain of so many atrocities they see every day.

Broken as one of the characters who dreams of something impossible, to rebuild his life, while he is only left to be a scavenger who picks up what the most unfortunate must leave abandoned because of a ruthless system. Yes, that other great monster that has destroyed all the others. The system that has no compassion and that is capable of determining the destiny of a person, by some mistake of youth, destroy their future, because of that same system that pushes everyone down the path of self-destruction. An entire society is the great broken monster of the book's title.

Although several subplots are dealt with and the narrative jumps between the different characters, who at the beginning have no relationship, the reading is fast and does not become heavy. The novel manages to have balance in all the plots that in the end are united by a common factor.

As in the novel Shinign Girls, there is a great mystery about the murderer, but this time they do not show it so fast, the author has chosen to show it in small doses in each chapter. Making us devour each page with ease, because the story is entertaining.

Teenage characters are never my favorite, that's why many parts of the detective's daughter with her class friends, in rehearsals for a play and seems to be in love with another boy who ignores her, I thought at one point, that it was filler material, but as I continued my reading, everything took on a more global sense and that it was important to show the evolution of that character for the resolution of the story.

Broken Monsters is the novel I recommend to fans of crime thrillers and serial killers mixed with the science fiction and fantasy genre. Only if you like these types of stories will you enjoy it.

While I imagine who might direct the adaptation and the actors I would choose to play the characters, I invite you to buy the book, either in physical or digital format (I read it in digital format) for your reading pleasure. In case you have already read it, I would love to know your opinion or recommend a novel of this genre in the comments.

I see what you did there with the plot thing 😅. You wet the appetite of the reader making us curios to read more.

This sounds like a classic movie. Broken monsters and everyone is that. It's so relatable. Everyone seems to have struggles.

Some where somehow I have seen Lauren Beukes work but I can't quite remember where. I need to reaccess my library.

Great review J

Thanks for your comment! :)

Yes, that's what I try to do in my reviews, whether they are of movies, series or books, make the reader feel interested to seek out the work and enjoy it.

The other novel I have read by the author is "Shining Girls" which was recently made into a miniseries. I enjoyed both the book and the miniseries.

The author has other science fiction novels that I have not read, but I hope to get them soon in my native language.

I admire your writing. You wrote the review exactly how detailed you write for movies too.

Another thing I did was to look for the writer's previous works,

Exactly what you do with the movies too :)

Interesting plot, I don't like teen stories too but this seems wild and intriguing. Looks like something I would want to read without pausing.. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting

The main character, the detective, has a teenage daughter and there is a subplot , but it is a novel with adult characters and a mystery to solve. Catching the mysterious killer. If you like thrillers with serial killers this is a novel you will love. I hope you read it someday or you can also hope they do a miniseries adaptation. I'm sure that will happen soon.

Interesting book I must say and your review of the novel makes me want to read it to. Thank you for a wonderful review.

Thank you for commenting. I hope you can read it and like it.

Its feels really good reading the book review. Reading this book i am getting a feeling to buy and read it right now. already ordered. thanks for letting us know about it.

I think it's great, in my reviews I try to get people interested in reading the book or watching the movie or series, when I review movies. I think the digital edition is on Amazon, about 14$, but maybe in your country the physical edition is available. I hope you will read it someday.

Thanks for commenting

Yes for sure I'll be reading this book. And i prefer the physical edition than the digital one.
