Continuing with my series of posts on this saga, today I will talk about The Lost Symbol, written by Dan Brown in 2009, it is the third book of the stories of Robert Langdon, the protagonist who is involved in the most incredible mysteries trying to solve them.
In the previous post I talked about The Da Vinci Code, a controversial novel that gave most of the fame to this book series. However, I think the best one is definitely The Lost Symbol and you can continue reading if you want to know why. Although of course, I will give some spoilers
Synopsis
Given Robert Langdon's fame as an expert in symbology, it is to be expected that his close friends turn to him when they need something related to the subject. Peter Solomon, director of the Smithsonian Institution, is no exception, and with the intention of giving a conference on Freemasonry, he contacts Robert to be one of the speakers. Langdon gladly accepts, Peter is one of his best friends.
However, upon arriving at the place he not only realizes that it is empty, but that there is also a strange "object" on the ground... A severed hand, and not just any hand, is that of his friend. Thus Robert discovers that Peter has been kidnapped and whoever has perpetuated the heinous crime makes his objective clear, which is to find the Masonic Pyramid, giving Langdon an ultimatum: either help him find it or Peter will die.
I think this becomes the most exciting book because it is the first time where the protagonist seems to be in serious trouble, because he reaches a point where he can really be expected to fail. Langdon's desperation is clearly demonstrated when facing an enemy who seems to always be one step ahead of him, which also without really meaning to causes Robert to face his worst fear. All this tension is reflected throughout the story, which is already a very different point from the other two books.
That tension together with the mystery makes it a very captivating and entertaining book, since the climax is not entirely expected at the beginning; It is only almost at the end that it can be intuited. Besides, I think that the resource he used may be a cliché but Brown knew how to work on it so that it went a little further with the atrocious things that he narrates. To think that a son would do something like that to his father to reach "the truth" is horrible, but he also had a very hard life that dragged him to that madness.
And speaking precisely of the antagonist, Mal'akh is an intriguing character. From the beginning the description of a completely tattooed man who keeps that special place for the supposed absolute truth, a man who believes himself to be something superior far from humanity who is capable of doing whatever it takes to consummate his rise... It definitely makes yourself ask so many things, although it is evident that he is someone completely insane. But in my opinion those are the type of characters that make a story unforgettable, because his actions are so forceful that you always remember them. Besides, he wasn't bad just because, he was someone intelligent who had a clear purpose.
Whether it was realistic is another matter.
Another aspect that makes this story interesting is the theme of Freemasonry. As you know, most things about this organization are secret or at least not easy to understand at first glance, so reading a little about their beliefs and practices is too intriguing to ignore a story like this. Human beings are curious by nature, so when there is the opportunity to know something I think it would rarely be rejected. Of course there must be a lot of fictional things in this book, but something can be learned, whether about Freemasonry or culture in general, since the inclusion of history and art is as present as in other books by Dan Brown.
In fact, one of the things I enjoyed most reading this book was solving the mysteries as I reading, since they are structured so that you can solve them on your own. There are encrypted messages, numerical sequences to complete, and much more. I liked reading the book so much that I kept the piece of paper where I solved the puzzles. It's super fun to do it like that.

Furthermore, in this book Robert Langdon experiences a necessary character development, since we learn more about his past and himself, since we are given more information and also a situation is presented that takes away that aura of a hero, presenting him as a human being. Someone who can fail and who can feel afraid. An ordinary person who faces unusual situations. Not a hero but a brave man.
In general, it is a great thriller that never fails to excite you; It is read in an instant because of how much the story is engaging. It uses all the necessary elements to keep the reader anticipating what will happen as well as providing interesting information on issues that are not talked about much. I consider that to be the essential thing to make a good story, which is why I fully recommend this book.
There are things narrated that may be somewhat explicit but can be read more easily than for example The Da Vinci Code, however I recommend some caution for more sensitive readers.
This was my favorite saga for a long time and as I write these posts I begin to remember why, and it was that emotion of discovering the mystery behind everything that made me feel surprised. It was that intrigue that kept me so glued to those pages. That is something that few books have been able to convey to me and Dan Brown completely achieved it, both with the first two books and with this one.

Continuando con mi serie de post de esta saga, hoy les hablaré de El SÃmbolo Perdido, escrito por Dan Brown en 2009 es el tercer libro de las historias de Robert Langdon, protagonista que se ve envuelto en los más increÃbles misterios intentado resolverlos.
En el post anterior les hablé de El Código Da Vinci, una novela controversial que le dió la mayor parte de la fama a esta saga de libros. Sin embargo, considero que el mejor es definitivamente El SÃmbolo Perdido y puedes continuar leyendo si quieres saber porqué. Aunque por supuesto, daré algunos spoilers
Sinopsis
Dada la fama de Robert Langdon como experto en simbologÃa es de esperarse que sus amigos cercanos acudan a él cuando necesitan algo referente al tema. Peter Solomon, director del Instituto Smithsoniano no es la excepción , y con la intención de brindar una conferencia sobre la MasonerÃa contacta a Robert para que sea uno de los ponentes. Langdon acepta de muy buen agrado, Peter es uno de sus mejores amigos.
Sin embargo, al llegar al lugar no solo se percata que está vacÃo, sino que además hay un extraño «objeto» en el suelo... Una mano cercenada, y no cualquier mano, es la de su amigo. Asà Robert descubre que Peter ha sido secuestrado y quien ha perpetuado el atroz crimen deja en claro su objetivo que es encontrar la Pirámide masónica, dándole a Langdon un ultimátum: o lo ayuda a encontrarla o Peter morirá.
Creo que este se convierte en el libro más emocionante porque es la primera vez donde el protagonista parece estar en serios problemas, porque llega a un punto donde realmente se puede esperar que fracase. Se demuestra claramente la desesperación de Langdon al enfrentarse a un enemigo que parece estar siempre un paso por delante de él, que además sin proponérselo realmente hace que Robert enfrente su peor miedo. Toda esta tensión se refleja en toda la historia, lo cual es ya un punto muy distinto a los otros dos libros.
Esa tensión junto con el misterio hace que sea un libro muy cautivante por lo entretenido, puesto que el clÃmax no es del todo esperado al principio; sólo casi al final es que puede llegar a intuirse. Aparte creo que el recurso que utilizan puede ser un cliché pero Brown supo trabajarlo para que fuera un poco más allá con las cosas atroces que narra. Pensar que un hijo le harÃa algo asà a su padre por alcanzar «la verdad» es horrible, pero él también tuvo una vida muy dura que lo arrastró a esa locura.
Y hablando justamente del antagonista, Mal'akh es un personaje intrigante. Desde el principio la descripción de un hombre completamente tatuado que guarda ese lugar especial para la supuesta verdad absoluta, un hombre que se cree algo superior alejado de la humanidad que es capaz de hacer lo que sea para consumar su ascenso... Definitivamente te hace preguntarte muchas cosas, aunque es evidente que es alguien completamente trastornado. Pero en mi opinión ése es el tipo de personajes que hace una historia inolvidable, porque sus acciones son tan contundentes que las recuerdas siempre. Aparte no era malo solo porque sÃ, era alguien inteligente que tenÃa un propósito claro.
Que haya sido algo realista, ya eso es otro asunto.
Otro aspecto que hace interesante esta historia es el tema de la MasonerÃa. Como sabrás, la mayorÃa de las cosas referentes a esta organización son secretas o al menos no se logran comprender a simple vista, por lo que leer un poco de sus creencias y prácticas resulta demasiado intrigante como para ignorar una historia asÃ. El ser humano es curioso por naturaleza, asà que cuando hay la oportunidad de saber algo creo que rara vez serÃa rechazada. Por supuesto deben haber un montón de cosas ficcionadas en este libro, pero algo se aprende, bien sea de MasonerÃa o de cultura en general, puesto que la inclusión de historia y arte está tan presente como en otros libros de Dan Brown.
De hecho, una de las cosas que más me disfruté leyendo este libro fue ir resolviendo los misterios sobre la marcha, puesto que están estructurados de manera de que tú mismo puedas resolverlos por tu cuenta. Hay mensajes incriptados, secuencias numéricas por completar, y un largo etcétera. Me gustó tanto leer el libro asà que conservé el pedazo de papel donde fui resolviendo los enigmas. Es súper divertido hacerlo asÃ.

Además en este libro Robert Langdon experimenta un desarrollo de personaje necesario, ya que aprendemos más de su pasado y de él mismo, puesto que se nos da más información y además se presenta una situación que le quita esa aura de héroe planteándolo como un ser humano más, alguien que puede fallar y que puede sentir miedo. Una persona corriente que se enfrenta a situaciones fuera de lo común. No un héroe sino un valiente.
En general es un thriller estupendo que no deja de emocionarte en ningún momento; se lee en un instante de lo mucho que engancha la historia. Utiliza todos los elementos necesarios para mantener al lector a la espectativa de qué ocurrirá asà como le brinda información interesante de cuestiones de las que no se habla mucho. Eso considero que es lo esencial para hacer una buena historia, por lo que recomiendo este libro completamente.
Hay cosas narradas que pueden ser un tanto explÃcitas pero pueden leerse con mayor facilidad que por ejemplo El Código Da Vinci, sin embargo recomiendo algo de precaución para los lectores más sensibles.
Esta fue mi saga favorita por mucho tiempo y al escribir estos posts comienzo a recordar porqué, y era esa emoción de descubrir el misterio detrás de todo lo que me hacÃa sentir sorprendida. Era esa intriga lo que mantenÃa tan pegada a esas páginas. Eso es algo que pocas me ha logrado transmitir un libro y Dan Brown lo logró completamente, tanto con los primeros dos libros como con éste.
