What's better than cake? How do people hold it together? How do we deal with feelings of imperfection? How should we love? What do we do when our hearts hurt?

If you liked the Tao of Pooh or Johnathon Livingstone Seagull, you'll love this book and want to gift it to others.

My husband kept making me laugh talking about how he got a book from the library, calling it variations of things as he'd forgotten the title. I had no context and no idea of what he was on about. It became, interchangeably:

  • The Fox, The Ocelot and the Teapot
  • The Fox, the Dog and the somethingortheother
  • The Fox, The Narwhale, the Poltergeist and the Walrus

And so on, until he brought the book home. It had been recommended by colleagues at work so he grabbed it from the school library.

'The Boy, the Mole, The Fox and The Horse' by Charlie Mackery illustrated by the author, is a delightful book full of simple yet profound wisdoms, like how people might look perfect but underneath they're struggling, and how friendship and love doesn't care for such things.

From the little mole that focusses on happiness via cake to the fox chained to his own nature yet is saved by love, the characters in this story are sweetly perfect, as troubled by life as we are, and ready to send us off on our day with a bit of peace in our hearts, especially if one reads it over breakfast.

And I Keep Worrying...

That beautiful gems like this, hand drawn and handwritten, will be no longer in a world where AI will write for us, philosophise for us, because there will no longer be any support for creatives in a world where the machine creates to 'make our lives easier'. Own nothing and be happy. Create nothing and be happy.

And that's the very, very least of it, almost irrelevant in the grand scheme of what's to come.

I wonder what the mole, the fox, the boy and the horse would think of this world, as they stare with me into this wilderness.

With Love,

This is such a beautiful book with beautiful drawings. loved it !

It's truly a gem! The kind of book I'd buy for a gift.

I get a catalog of books called Bas Bleu and had often seen this book in it. I order the books that interest me from the library to see if I like them enough to buy them. Having seen your review, I think I will order it to browse through.

Oh yes I think you'd enjoy it! I think anyone would πŸ’—

It's funny how your husband said a lot of really hard words when the actual book is really so simple. Hilarious man, indeed.πŸ˜‚
On one of the opened pages, I saw "Love doesn't need you to be extraordinary."
And somehow that's enough reason to get this book because it's so sweet and it spoke a lot to me. Funny how you see certain things when you need to see them.🌺

I think you'd love it!!

My husband still makes me laugh after 20 years.

And that's a rare gift that many people don't have. Very lovely indeed.πŸ€—

Looks like a cute little book.
Indeed, handwritten and self illustrated… I so hope it won’t go away 😎
Have a lovely day πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜Š

It's really lovely!

We got it as a random gift from some professional office we used years ago and they send us stuff for Christmas. I love the thing! It’s such a good read, so many nuggets of important information and confidence in there! I read it every few weeks to my son and it’s a wonderful book.

The AI world is not looking too interesting, there’s this unfortunate obsession with making us more of a machine and less human all the time. It’s a load of shit!

Ah I'm so glad you read it to your boy. I love the fox - he's so damaged when they find him but he's saved by love. And the mole who focuses on the positives!

The line I love is the one that says β€œare you a glass half full or empty? I’m glad to have a glass” that ones great!

Books with cool illustrations like this one have a lasting effect on us. I don't think anyone would find it easy to remember that title though. XD

Thank you for sharing

Haha I know, the title is tricky!!!!

this looks beautiful! You've got me looking for it now. A friend's birthday is coming up, and this seems like the perfect gift I'm looking for, full of light and wisdom. Thank you! <3

Edit: Aaaand ordered! Thanks so much again, I've been going by feel in gathering together her present and when I saw your pictures, I just knew.

That's fantastic!!! Let me know what they think!

I'm liking it so much I've half a mind to keep it πŸ˜† seriously though, she's gonna love it. So grateful to have found your post! Have a great weekend πŸ€—

Sorry to see you go. It can be frustrating here I know. I just focus on the good stuff. Take care.

You seem cool. Thank you.

The mole, the fox, the machine and the horse

It's the simple things that make you smile. The slight mental twirk to change your thinking. The keen focus to see into another dimension.
The letting go to realise all that you have.

So true. That's what I loved about this book - the simple reminders in a refreshing way. How quickly we forget!
