Springbank 10 years

Before Christmas I bought a bottle of Springbank 10 years for hubby when we were in London for the day. We first saw it in a posh department store called Selfridges that day. Springbank whisky are not the easiest to come by, and this was going for £85. That is very expensive for a 10 year old whisky, and even hubs knew better than not to give it a thought.

Then he remembered there's a little whisky shop called Cadenhead's about 10 minutes walk away. He went there for a whisky tasting session many years ago, and suggested we go for a little 'stroll'. Yeah sure, a stroll, I thought.

When we got there, Cadenhead's was a true little gem. Physically, it was a small shop, this was central London after all. It was packed with many independent bottles, mainly whisky, but also rum and gin, and would be heaven for drink lovers. Sadly with the place being pretty compact, it was very difficult to take any good photos.

Hubs eyes lit up when he saw a bottle of Springbank 10 years on the shelf. The shop owner said they only get 5 or 6 bottles of Springbank in every month. They're always random bottles but will always sellout as they're so popular. Dare we ask the price? £52, we were told. That's an absolute bargain compared to £85 10 minutes walk away. Hubby bought a bottle of Springbank 15 two years ago, also from Cadenhead's when we were visiting Edinburgh 2 years ago. He's nearly finished that, and was keen to replenish his collection.

The Springbank 10 years made its debut at a recent dinner family gathering, along with a few other bottles of course.

Hubby let me nose it when he poured his first dram. Unusually for me, I immediately smelled a pleasant hint of orange. Normally I find all whisky quite stinky.

Compared to the Springbank 15 which hubs has enjoyed very much, the 10 yo bottle is more vibrant and interesting. He described it as a sophisticated lady vs a energetic girl. It has a lovely citrus nose, and complex layer on the palate. He's been a fan of Springbank for quite a long time now, and felt this bottle offered very good value for money.

I forgot to mention, both his drinking buddies, ie my two brothers in laws enjoyed it as well. Thumbs up all-round.

I think it's great the way you describe that whiskey, setting it to the perfect conditions in which you should consume a good drink of that drink, I would like to ask if the community is only published on whiskey, because I am Cuban and we have good rum here and I would like to make a post with some of them, greetings.

I'm not sure about rum, best for the mods @bozz and @steevc to answer that one. Otherwise you can try the Amazing Drinks community https://peakd.com/c/hive-189869/created but make sure you read their community rules carefully as they are quite strict.

Hey! We don't get many posts in this community, so I don't mind opening it up to other spirits. Tell us about your run.

Thank you my love for that beer Cheers!!!, for you and me, cheers

I know he likes a whisky..bargain! Sadly we can't have it in house or the bottle goes within hours.

is that you or Jamie? 😉

Normally I find all whisky quite stinky.

gasoline, right? 🤣

But the truth is that I feel like drinking a good whisky while chatting with someone on a nice subject... all these bottles I see here are making me want to come out of my cave.

It was a good buy for sure! 😁

Gasoline! Yes, exactly!!!

Since you hosted me to a lovely dinner this week, let me treat you to a a round (or two) or nice Scottish whisky. Enjoy!

Oh, 😌 thank you! I'm already enjoying it ;)

And here I was thinking that I have tried them all, I may even break my dry spell.

There are so many out there, I think it's impossible for anyone to try them all!!

He's nearly finished that, and was keen to replenish his collection.

A collection, you say? 🤔

😁

ha ha! That didn't pass by you 🙃

You brought a little gem at home, didn't you 😁
Never enjoyed whiskey, but owning one that is so old makes it a great addition to the shelf even if not consumed, lol

The guys all enjoyed it, so it was certainly a good buy. And I can agree, the collection looks good at home even if I don't drink it

Sounds an interesting Whisky to enjoy on special occasions, price does make the difference one really has to shop around for everything of late !LOLZ

Apparently adding herbs to your garbage can makes it smell better.
But I don't have thyme for that rubbish.

We were very lucky to find this reasonably price one at last, happy days

Hubby will be sure to enjoy, perhaps savour a sip or two on a cold night yourself.

I'll have to keep my eye out for this, but it doesn't sound like I will have much luck if it is even hard to get over there! I picked up a bottle of some hard to find stuff the other day as well. Mine was only $28, so it was a real bargain! Thanks for sharing this great bottle!

Nice one $28, hope you're enjoying it. You going to be posting about it? I notice the community is a little quiet nowadays

I have some other ones stacked up that I will probably get to before that one. It's never been super busy, but yeah, everything seems quite quiet around Hive lately.

I like whisky but I feel the whisky my uncles drink is just another level. Too strong for my liking I think. Love how uncle still knows about the whisky shops he went to years ago.

that's the great thing about blogging, I don't think we would have remembered otherwise.

maybe next time you can join in to try a little, or mix it with something else. Some of the stuff they drink are really good quality.

Normally I find all whisky quite stinky.

Could not have put it better myself!

Bring on the Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla, with a smidgen of lemonade

If I had to choose, it would be a gin as well, it's more adaptable as a mixer I think

yes indeed and a more pleasant taste , probably due to the mixer that though

33 pounds difference is huge for such a short distance. 'London Prices', never liked those :)

There's Selfridges for you.

I was quite amazed that Cadenhead's sold it at a reasonable price given their shop is smack bang in Central London and the bottle is always sold out. That says something about their ethos and longevity in the business

Yes for sure. And it shows just how greedy Selfridges are.

I'm not the biggest fan of whiskey but on special occasions I'll give a new taste a whirl.

I'm not up to date, are you back living in the UK?

Yeah, I came back in Feb 2020, it was supposed to be a one month family visit. Then covid blew up, Taiwan closed their border for two years and I couldn't get back in. I was stranded in UK, which tbh wasn't such a bad thing as I'd rather be stranded on home soil during covid rather than on a tourist visa in Taiwan not knowing if and when I'd be kicked out. After that, it just felt too much effort to restart life again in Taiwan.

I take it you're going to stay put in Spain? Don't blame you, we'd like a bit of sun please 🙂

Ahh! Well I'm glad you've seemingly settled back into no sunshine land.

Reckon you'll need regular holidays to catch that elusive sunshine, but in the meantime i'll try to provide some via Hive :)

Send some of that sun over anytime!!

Glad the "stroll" payed out big time! :) I'm more of a red wine guy, glad they're normally way cheaper! !BEER

Hubby was well certainly well pleased, and it was a nice walk as normally we wouldn't venture into the smaller roads behind the main streets.

Smaller roads tend to have some hidden pearls! ;)

Hey @livinguktaiwan, here is a little bit of BEER from @pardinus for you. Enjoy it!

Well, that for sure was worth the walk and not only for the price difference by the sounds of it!
Funny how prices vary; on our recent Midlands trip we were surprised to find a bargain price in one of the posh cafés yet much higher in a little shop that supposedly offers discount prices!

That's unfortunate. I think we should support small shops if possible, but sometimes the premium is just too big to justify it

I do my best to support small businesses but when it comes to pricing, they need to be more mindful

I don't know that one. Will look out for it. Some shops will overprice things like this as they know they can sell it anyway. I'd rather support the smaller businesses.

Cheers!

I think Cadenhead's could have charged a lot more for the bottle. The fact they didn't is really decent of them

As important as Campbelltown was for whisky I have never ever tried a whisky from there!

We, actually hubs and my brother in law, always say we should do a tour up Scotland the distilleries. We'll get there one day, and I'll probably end up doing all the driving

The ones I like are on the islands hehe, but they are fun to tour.

I love how the Springbank manages to have a mix of salt and fruity essence. The bottles are usually very expensive and hard to find.

I'm sure your husband must have been elated to have one more to stock up. Enjoy yourselves guys🙂

Salt and fruity? That's an usual combination. Interesting how people's palate differs on the same product. Os it also expensive and hard to find in Nigeria ?

A relative of mine brought it back from her travels actually. It was my first time tasting it, that's what I remember from it.

lucky you getting to try such a hard to come by whiskey
