Cypriot #BeerSaturday V: Πίβο (Pivo)

Believe it or not, the best beer I had in Cyprus is called Pivo, which means beer in Czech, my mother tongue. Well, actually, it is spelled in the Greek alphabet like this: Πίβο. But still, they read it just like we do: Pivo. I hadn’t heard about any microbrewery in Cyprus and whenever I asked anybody for a local beer, I got KEO or Léon until then. But let’s start at the beginning of this story. We returned from the Turkish zone that night and had several hours to kill. Our flight back home was scheduled for early morning and we decided to enjoy the Nicósian night life rather than sleeping like three hours and waking up like at three AM. 7 Κλειδιά was one of the places on my girlfriend’s “must taste whetever their specialty is”. We found it and, well, stayed until the closing time. Their specialty could have been beer, except…

Věřte nebo ne, to nejlepší pivo, které jsem na Kypru měl, se jmenuje Pivo. Píše se to samozřejmě alfabetou, takže takhle: Πίβο. Ale vyslovuje se to pivo. O tom, že jsou na Kypru nějaké minipivovary, jsem až do té chvíle neměl tušení. Vždycky, když jsem se ptal na místní pivo, dostal jsem KEO nebo Léon. Ale začněme na začátku. Ten večer jsme se vrátili z turecké zóny a měli před sebou pár hodin volna. Náš zpáteční let byl brzo ráno, a tak jsme se rozhodli raději si užít místního nočního života, než jít na pár hodin spát a vstávat třeba ve tři v noci. 7 Κλειδιά byl jedním z podniků, které měla T. na svém seznamu "vyzkoušíme jejich specialitu, ať už je to cokoli". Podnik jsme našli. No, a zůstali jsme do zavíračky. Jejich specialitou by mohlo být pivo. Jenže...

Remember when I noticed that the Turks actually know something about the beer they serve? The Cypriot Greeks usually don’t have a single clue. I noticed crafted beer on the menu and asked which one it was. The waitress needed to ask some other staff and disappeared inside the bar for a minute.

“I don’t know, there are two. They are both brewed in Cyprus. One is said to be bitter and the other one fruity, I think.” She didn’t discover much, did she?

As a Czech, I lean towards bitter lagers, Pilsner style, obviously. We ordered two “bitter crafted beers”. Fingers crossed as I wasn’t really expecting much from the beer presented in such manner.**

Pamatujete, jak jsem psal, že Turci o pivu, které čepují, něco vědí? Tak kyperští Řekové obvykle nemají ani páru. Když jsem si v menu všiml řemeslného piva, přirozeně jsem se zeptal, o jaké jde. Servírka se musela jít dovnitř do baru zeptat kolegyně. Zpátky byla asi za minutku a moc toho nezjistila:

"Nevím, jsou tam dvě a obě se vaří tady na Kypru. Jedno je prý hořké a to druhé ovocné, myslím."

Jako správný Čech mám samozřejmě slabost pro hořká spodně kvašená piva, ležáky plzeňského typu, a tak jsme si objednali "dvě hořká řemeslná piva". A drželi jsme si palce, protože od takhle prezentovaného piva jsem moc nečekal.

As I said, we spend there several hours drinking wonderful Czech style lager called Blondie, as I discovered later on. The brewery uses 100% Pilsen malt together with Czech hops and yeast. The beer really does remind of world famous, yet average (at least nowadays) Pilsner Urquell. The taste, colour, foam, smell, everything was all right. I felt home and was amazed I must admit. This beer could be proudly served in Zlý časy or any other famous beer bar in the Czech Republic and nobody could complain about it. Hats off for the Pivomicrobrewery team! 10 of 10 and a must for anybody visiting Cyprus.

A jak už jsem napsal, nakonec jsme tu zůstali několik hodin a pili skvělý ležák Blondie, jak jsem si později našel. Pivovar používá 100% plzeňský slad, český chmel i pivní kvasinky, takže pivo opravdu lehce připomíná světově známý, ale průměrný Pilsner Urquell. Jeho chuť, barva, pěna i vůně, všechno bylo v naprostém pořádku. Musím přiznat, že jsem se na chvíli cítil jako doma a byl jsem překvapen. Tohle pivo by se klidně mohlo točit ve Zlých časech nebo v jakémkoli jiném známém pivním baru a nikdo by si nemohl stěžovat. Klobouk dolů před Pivomicrobrewery! 10 z 10 a povinnost pro každého, kdo se chystá na Kypr.

I'm getting lost a bit between the names of the Beer. "Pivo" or "Blondie"? Or you've been trying both that night?
Hahaha sounds familiar "one tastes like fruity and the other bitter** I think**" That's why she went to ask it, right? Not to have to think !PIZZA

Well, my bad. Pivo is the brand and Blondie the beer we drank. The brewery brews several different beers.

I really liked the island, so I’d like to come back ;)

I liked it too... I'm not sure that this was because it was my first destination as an expat (and in the tourist branche) or because of the island, but i'm sure that I still have excellent memories about the Akamas natural reserve and the Troodos mountains. Nicosia and Limassol didn't make a huge impression on me but because of the many hours of working AND living I was very tired most of the time, not to mention if I had to leave early to go to visit these cities from Paphos.... !PIZZA

Ohh i'm reading this too late but I'll keep it in mind the Next saturday if I have some beers ☺️. I remember de "pivos" when I was in Prague. I think there was cheaper to drink a beer than to drink water 🤣.
