Augusta National es un club con una enorme historia en el golf mundial, aunque paradójicamente, es el más nuevo de los cuatro majors que integran el Grand Slam de campeonatos mayores junto al Abierto de los Estados Unidos, el torneo de la PGA y el Abierto Británico.
Desde mi punto de vista el más bello campo de golf de todos los que integran los principales circuitos golfísticos del mundo, ubicado en Augusta, Georgia, este campo fue fundado en 1933 y comenzó a organizar el Masters en 1934. Solamente dejó de jugarse el torneo entre 1943 y 1945 debido a la segunda guerra mundial.
En los primeros años no se entregaba junto al trofeo distintivo para los campeones el luego famoso saco verde, este atuendo estaba reservado para los socios del club, para que el público que presenciaba el torneo pudiera identificarlos y hacerles preguntas, recién en 1949 con el triunfo de Sam Snead se entregó por primera vez un saco de color verde, igual a los que lucían los socios, al campeón de ese año y desde allí se convirtió en un elemento distintivo adicional al resto de los majors, el saco y la cena de los campeones, reservada solo para los ganadores y el encargado de su organización y la elección del menú es el campeón del año anterior.
Pasaron muchos años desde su inauguración para que un jugador no nacido en los Estados Unidos se vistiera de verde al ganar el torneo, recién en 1961 se rompió esa hegemonía cuando se impuso el sudafricano Gary Player, integrante del famoso terceto junto a Jack Nicklaus y Arnold Palmer que dominaron el golf mundial durante más de dos décadas.
Precisamente Jack Nicklaus, el oso dorado, es el máximo ganador del Masters de Augusta con 6 conquistas, con 5 se encuentra el gran Tiger Woods que este año ha vuelto a intentarlo, aunque su condición física no es la mejor y difícilmente podamos volver a verlo en su plenitud, el accidente más sus 49 años hacen que cada año sea más difícil la vuelta al triunfo, triste realidad.
Entre los ganadores, los norteamericanos tienen la supremacía absoluta, pero a lo largo de los años varios latinos han logrado el triunfo, el saco verde y el derecho a jugar el torneo mientras vivan, entre ellos se destacan los españoles Severiano Ballesteros y José María Olazábal con dos triunfos cada uno, luego están Sergio García y más recientemente (el campeón saliente) Jon Rahm, también un argentino alcanzó la gloria, Ángel Cabrera con su triunfo en 2009 y un segundo puesto en 2013 por detrás del australiano Adam Scott. Otro argentino que se quedó a las puertas de conseguir su saco verde fue el maestro Roberto De Vicenzo cuando firmó una tarjeta equivocada a la cual se le había puesto un golpe de más y por reglamento le dejaron ese score privándolo del acceso a un desempate.
Augusta también tiene el privilegio de tener al primer japonés ganador de un torneo mayor, Hideki Matsuyama ganador en 2021 y en 2022 ganó su primer título Scottie Scheffer quien repitió en el día de ayer. En 2023 Scheffer le colocó el saco verde a Jon Rham y en 2024 el español le devolvió la gentileza al colocárselo él.
Efectivamente el número uno del ranking mundial, el norteamericano Scottie Scheffer de 27 años de edad, revalidó esa posición al ganar con autoridad el primer major del año y volvió a recibir la clásica chaqueta verde que identifica a los campeones.
Hay jugadores que se ganan el cariño y el aprecio del público por su carisma y otros por su buen juego, Scottie Scheffer forma parte de estos últimos y aunque no exteriorice ni irradie simpatía, termina imponiéndose con autoridad y la gente se rinde ante su capacidad. Sin embargo y pese a esa concentración que lo hace aparecer como distante, es muy querido por sus rivales y compañeros de juego, la enorme mayoría dice que es tremendamente competitivo y dominador cuando está enfocado, algo que lamentablemente para el resto, repite muy frecuentemente, como en estos 4 días en que se desarrolló el torneo, ganó por 4 golpes de diferencia contra su inmediato perseguidor, el sueco Ludvig Aberg, un chico de 24 años con menos de una temporada como profesional llamado a ser un gran jugador en el circuito. Scheffer tomó la punta en la segunda jornada y no la volvió a abandonar, en el día de ayer con 4 birdies en los últimos 9 hoyos tomó una ventaja indescontable que le permitió llegar sin sobresaltos al hoyo 72.
Scheffer se muestra dominante en un circuito por demás competitivo, lleva 3 triunfos y un segundo puesto en sus cuatro últimas presentaciones, es temprano para asegurarlo, pero se muestra tan superior como Tiger Woods en sus mejores épocas.
Muchos de los grandes jugadores de los últimos años han abandonado el circuito de la PGA para irse a jugar al LIV que reparte enormes sumas de dinero en premios y se juega a solo 54 hoyos en 3 jornadas, demasiadas ventajas como para desestimar una oferta de tales características, sin embargo, ninguno de esos jugadores ha podido acercarse a Scheffler, muy probablemente los organizadores y directivos del PGA anoche se fueron a dormir con una enorme sonrisa en sus rostros.

Este es uno de los deportes en los que me declaro analfabeto porque mi conocimiento es muy escaso y, poco de lo que sé es que Tiger Woods es uno de los mejores jugadores de golf de todos los tiempos y no porque lo haya seguido, sino, porque haciendo una investigación sobre los mejores deportistas de la historia me llamó la atención su palmarés.
En la publicación me percato del amplio conocimiento que tiene y lobie documentado que está.
De la calidad de su pluma no hablo porque es algo más que evidente.

Juego al golf desde hace muchísimos años y es un deporte que me apasiona, lamentablemente nunca pude jugar tan bien como hubiera querido, pero me alcanzó para ganar algunas veces y divertirme siempre.
Respecto a Tiger, efectivamente es el segundo jugador más importante de la historia de este deporte solo superado por Jack Nickaus quien ganó 18 majors a lo largo de su carrera. Woods se quedó en 15 aunque pudo haber alcanzado esa marca, pero problemas personales que afectaron su vida como golfista, además el paso del tiempo y un accidente automovilístico que tuvo algunos años atrás y del que le quedaron secuelas evidentes en el tobillo izquierdo, hacen que necesite un milagro para volver a competir en el máximo nivel que alguna vez alcanzó.
