This weekend we were on the streets of Azerbaijan, at the Baku circuit, one of my favorites because of the mix of different types of corners it has. Two long straights, 90-degree bends, and other, less challenging corners; in other words, it's a fast track, but one that requires a lot of caution—a single mistake and you can end up in the situation we saw during qualifying on Saturday and in the race yesterday. Personally, I was hoping for an exciting, action-packed race, with plenty of overtaking, maybe even some rain, since it was forecast, but the reality is that Baku was a real disappointment; at least for me, it was a tough race to watch.
But it's strange because Saturday's qualifying session for pole position was particularly eventful, given the track's notorious reputation for crashes. Five red flags were displayed during that session, with drivers like Leclerc, Piastri, Albon, and Colapinto all experiencing firsthand the unforgiving nature of the circuit's barriers. It should be noted that track conditions were challenging, with strong winds and rapidly dropping temperatures. Ultimately, all of these incidents were the responsibility of the individual drivers; on a track like this, there's no room for hesitation when taking a corner—one mistake and it's all over. But amidst all the chaos of that Q3 session, one driver stood out, besides Verstappen, and that was Spaniard Carlos Sainz.
Between the two red flags and the time lost, the Williams driver was one of the few who managed to complete a lap without any issues and set a competitive time. Others also tried, but under the added pressure of knowing it was a make-or-break situation. As expected, it wasn't enough, and Sainz ended up in second place, overtaken by Verstappen, who capitalized on McLaren's disastrous weekend to narrow the points gap in the championship. The result was an almost unprecedented first row on the grid, with Max and Carlos leading the way. It's known that the Williams car is currently performing well; it's a fast machine. But the real challenge for the Spaniard was to maintain his position on the podium.
As I mentioned earlier, the race was terrible. Beyond Piastri's crash that forced him to retire, nothing particularly exciting happened during the 54 laps. This retirement for the McLaren driver is the result of a disastrous weekend for the papaya-colored team. They still have a competitive car, but sometimes things just don't go their way. Adding to this, with Laurent Mekies joining Red Bull, the Austrian team has definitely gained a new lease on life. Technical adjustments to their cars have allowed them to perform much better on track, and the overall team atmosphere seems more relaxed. Even Tsunoda looks more confident; he finished in P6.
One of the things that strikes me most is that Carlos Sainz managed to get a podium finish with Ferrari before Hamilton did, something that would have seemed crazy to imagine at the start of the season. Lewis is definitely not having a good season, to the point that I wonder if it might have been a mistake for him to join the Italian team, or perhaps Sainz's departure was the mistake, considering that the Spaniard is a fantastic driver, one of the best on the grid, and the last driver to win a Grand Prix for Ferrari. His race yesterday was very good; he couldn't hold onto his position, losing out to Russell, but he did manage to keep Antonelli behind him to retain P3. Lawson is another driver who is looking strong (P5), and Lando Norris also couldn't move up the order and get out of that P7 position.
With these results, the fight for the championship intensifies, with Verstappen now 44 points behind Norris and 69 points behind Piastri, who didn't score any points. Seven races remain, which is enough time to narrow those gaps and change the entire standings, especially if McLaren struggles again as they did in Azerbaijan. It's worth noting that with Sainz's podium finish, the Williams team moves up to fifth place in the constructors' championship with 101 points, the most coveted position among the mid-field teams. For me, the best driver of the day was Carlos Sainz, despite Verstappen's impressive performance, which included a Grand Slam (pole position, race win, fastest lap, and leading every lap of the race). The next race is in two weeks in Singapore at the Marina Bay circuit.

Coincido en lo de Sainz, una gran clasificación con ayuda del destino que hizo que las banderas rojas dejaran al resto con poco tiempo como para mejorar.
De todas maneras, no te olvides de que Hamilton ganó una carrera Sprint esta temporada.

A nivel de grandes premios el último fue Sainz, esas sprint hoy por hoy sigo sin verles el sentido. La verdad esperaba otro desempeño de Hamilton en Ferrari, no deduzco que le puede estar pasando al británico.
A Sainz los dioses del automovilismo lo ayudaron pero igualmente muy contento por él, hace magia con ese Williams.

Aunque no te gusten las carreras sprint, las autoridades de la F1 están pensando en hacer más de esas carreras a partir del año próximo y también otras modificaciones que comenté en una publicación un par de semanas atrás. Todo pensado para dotar de un mayor atractivo al espectáculo porque las carreras están siendo muy aburridas, lamentablemente.
