midges ... on the camera lens that it was difficult to take a photo!

no, I couldnt imagine that :/

our midges disaster level was apparently like this: I step out to the garden, start to dig, and apparently 30 sec start to throw them away from my head and ears and neck - and after 60-90 sec have to run back home, scratching myself... .and it lasted more than a week... happily this is not for all of the summer :(

It seems that the further north you go here the worse the biting insects are. And there is one infestation or another all summer. You don't have mosquitos?

we have mosquitos, 2-3 species, only 1 is human blood-sucking. at times they are very annoying (in the May--June they are on their peak of population) but midgets much worse.

They are all nasty critters!

i love the word critters :)
haha
but I think I know another word which suits them better, tho its a ZOroastrian termin and persian language, not an English at all. have you ever heard about the hravstra ?.. it will be hard to describe neatly what is it... but moskitos and midges are definitely, hravstra!

I have not heard that word! I couldn't find a definition, but you gave me a good insight into the meaning!

in Zoroastrian conception, Ahriman (analog of Lucifer, lets simplify so) created the bad things to spoil the humans the good side of life, as hravstra is one of them. on the casual level, 'hravstra' are the moths, moskitos, rodents, and especially reptiles, snakes, etc.

auto translation:
Khrafstra - (zend. "Harmful") - is violent and harmful spirits represented in the form of terrestrial insects, toads, snakes, birds of prey, wolves and other creatures generated by Angro-Mainyu (which is why religious law prescribes to destroy them). “Harmful” animals in the system of Zoroastrian dualism oppose the good, “Akhurovsky” animals. In the Central Persian dogmatic tradition, the hrafstra were considered to be virgins and were created by Ahriman at the beginning of creation, then a drought hit the Earth, fighting against which Tishtar poured out the great rain of the hrafstra from the sky, drowned, decomposed, and sea water became salty from their “poison and stench”. In a metaphorical sense, the word hrafstra refers to all enemies of Zoroastrianism.
