Wild Violets - phone photography

in Feel Good23 days ago

Wood violet is the state flower for Wisconsin.
It grows in woodlands and meadows in the eastern United States and is blooming now in the woods and grassy areas around my house.
They are one of the early spring flowers that I look forward to as the woods begin to turn green after a long winter.

Violet blossoms are edible and a few years ago I picked a bucket full and made violet jelly RECIPE It had a sweet floral taste and looked beautiful in the small jars that I used.

Wild violets are considered an invasive perennial, but I happen to find them delightful and enjoy having them turning my landscape purple with their prolific blossoms.
I have childhood memories of picking violets that were growing beside the sidewalks as I walked home for school and stopping by my grandmother's house to bring her a bouquet.

Occasionally you can find patches of white violets and I have also seen yellow and pink.

Rose's are Red
Violets are Blue
Honey is Sweet
And so are you

It is called both Wood Violet and Wild Violet? this is an interesting kind of flower.

Wisconsin has many different kinds of violets including American dog, marsh blue, birdfoot, kidney-leaved, Canada, long-spurred and downy yellow. I think wild simply refers to it being one of the many wildflowers that grow in our woods.

Wow so many types of flowers in your area and it's nice you remember their names which means you really love your flowers.

Purple looks great on green grass. Spring is the most beautiful season in terms of color harmonies in nature and it makes us feel the summer heat even before it arrives.

Green and purple do go well together!

wow, there are so many of them. I would also have no problem if the invasive plant is that beautiful...hehe

They do form a carpet of springtime beauty!

Sure would like to have a taste of that jelly. 😋 My grandson and I love jam and jelly for breakfast. Such an interesting post, as usual 🫡

I think I liked the color of the jelly as much as the taste! Wish I could send you some to try!

I love wild violets... well... I love all the wild flowers. Today as I left to go visit Mom, there were at least 4 tiny kinds of wildflowers growing in my yard AND some tiny wild strawberries. They made me smile. While I was gone, they all got mowed. :(.... but hopefully more will be back in a few days. Just can't hold a good wildflower down.

I'm always sad when the lawn care guys show up in the spring. I have lots of wild strawberries, but the chipmunks always eat them before they even get ripe.

I probably told you this before, but the last house I lived in was in an semi-old neighborhood like one I grew up in before folks decided their lawn being free of clovers and dandelions and wildflower grasses. The lawn had basically not been over cared for in many years, but the beautiful thing about it was that it still had all those grasses. It was wonderful and brought back so many found memories. Since I was in charge of mowing it or having it mowed, I left it the first spring for a while and when I did mow, I left two big circles of uncut grass in the backyard where I could see it out my kitchen window and I was highly rewarded for that decision. One day I noticed movement and there were yellow finches in the tall grass and as I watched, they would get next to a dandelion, put one foot on the stem and then scoot down it sideways causing the top to lay over and when they got to the top, they then ate the seeds off. I had never seen such a thing and I wondered about all the things we were missing by being too fast to cut the grass.

It also had a big patch of redtop grass, the tops of which you never get to see with a frequently mowed yard. It wasn't more than 5 or 6 inches tall (or that is how it seemed this much later).... and it was so beautiful when the red feather'ish tops appeared and the morning or evening sun shown slanted threw it. I took photos somewhere, but like always, they just didn't do it justice. It warmed my heart to see it.

In my childhood, my grandmother used to make jam from it and feed it to me. I used to find the jam made by grandmother very tasty. Seeing these flowers always reminds me of my grandmother. Nowadays people do not know much about this flower. Everyone has become a slave of packed food.

We both had wise grandmothers! Nature provides us with so many opportunities for special treats!

Wow, I didn't even know these flowers were made into jelly. This is interesting and unusual, flower jelly.

Making jelly out of flowers was new to me. It turned out nicely, though.

They are very small and cute!

They are lovely little blossoms!

You made me remember when I was very little I also used to pick a lot of flowers on my way home, wow what days those were... They are beautiful these violets and I'm glad there are so many at this time of year. I recently had the privilege of visiting Spain, at the end of March and although in my country Venezuela flowers have a very special season, I think I finally experienced the real spring for the first time in my life being so far north, so these pictures fill me with joy just seeing them 🌸 Happy beginning of the week dear Melinda! 🙏

Spring is such a beautiful time of year! I'm glad you got to experience that.
