The first time I went to Italy, it was in 2009, after reading Ernst Gombrich's art history book.
I was fascinated by the ornamentation of the cathedral in Florence.
13 years later, I am still in awe of this architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance.
I began to walk around the building in search of the views that most inspired me to make sketches of the duomo.
I chose to represent the rear facade, much less frequented but also interesting.
I realized this first study directly with a ink pen:
Then, in a more frontal study of the same portion of the building, I drew this watercolor directly with a brush, emphasizing details around the central window.
The next day, I settled down in the warmth of a café restaurant, opposite the side entrance.
I wanted to make a bookmark to give as a gift for the Christmas holidays and the subject seemed appropriate.
This mixture of green, white and red tones, helps to harmonize the whole colors of the cathedral so rich in carved ornamentation.

La primera vez que fui a Italia fue en 2009, después de leer el libro de historia del arte de Ernst Gombrich.
Me fascinó la ornamentación de la catedral de Florencia.
13 años después, sigo maravillado con esta obra maestra de la arquitectura del Renacimiento.
Empecé a recorrer el edificio en busca de las vistas que más me inspiraran para hacer bocetos del duomo.
Elegí representar la fachada trasera, mucho menos frecuentada.
Hice este primer estudio directamente con un rotulador:
Luego, en un estudio más frontal de la misma parte del edificio, dibujé esta acuarela directamente con un pincel, enfatizando mi mirada en la ventana central.
Al día siguiente, me senté en el calor de un café-restaurante, frente a la entrada lateral.
Quería hacer un marcapáginas para regalar en las fiestas navideñas y el tema me pareció apropiado.
Esta mezcla de tonos verdes, blancos y rojos contribuye a armonizar el conjunto de las colores de la catedral, tan rica en ornamentación esculpida.

La prima volta che sono andato in Italia è stato nel 2009, dopo aver letto il libro di storia dell'arte di Ernst Gombrich.
Sono rimasto affascinato dall'ornamentazione della cattedrale di Firenze.
A distanza di 13 anni, sono ancora incantata da questo capolavoro architettonico del Rinascimento.
Cominciai a camminare intorno all'edificio alla ricerca degli scorci che più mi ispiravano per realizzare gli schizzi del duomo.
Ho scelto di rappresentare la facciata posteriore, molto meno frequentata ma altrettanto interessante.
Ho realizzato questo primo studio direttamente con un pennarello:
Poi, in uno studio più frontale della stessa porzione di edificio, ho disegnato questo acquerello direttamente con il pennello, enfatizzando lo sguardo sulla finestra centrale.
Il giorno dopo, mi sono seduto al caldo di un caffè ristorante, di fronte all'ingresso laterale.
Volevo fare un segnalibro da regalare per le feste natalizie e il tema mi sembrava appropriato.
Questa mescolanza di toni verdi, bianchi e rossi contribuisce ad armonizzare le colore della cattedrale, così ricca di ornamenti scolpiti.

La première fois que j'avais mis les pieds en Italie, c'était en 2009, après avoir lu le livre d'histoire de l'art d'Ernst Gombrich.
J'avais été fasciné par les ornementations de la cathédrale de Florence.
13 ans plus tard, je suis toujours aussi admiratif devant ce chef d'œuvre architectural de la renaissance.
Je me mis à faire le tour de l'édifice à la recherche des vues qui m'inspiraient le plus pour réaliser des croquis du duomo.
Je choisis de représenter la façade arrière, beaucoup moins fréquentée mais aussi intéressante.
Je réalisais cette première étude directement au stylo feutre :
Puis, dans une étude plus frontale de la même portion de l'édifice, je dessinai directement au pinceau cette aquarelle , en accentuant mon regard sur la fenêtre centrale.
Le lendemain, je m'installai au chaud dans un café restaurant, en face de l'entrée latérale.
Je voulais fabriquer un marque page pour l'offrir pendant les fêtes de Noël et le sujet me sembla approprié.
Ce mélange de ton vert, blanc et rouge, aide à harmoniser l'ensemble des couleurs la cathédrale si riche en ornementation sculptée.
