Muy buenas a todos en Hive. Hoy me siento emocionado porque con este post comienzo una serie de publicaciones que probablemente se mantenga viva durante toda mi estadía aquí. Aunque en mi post de presentación hablé mucho sobre mi afición a la literatura y las historias, siendo franco, el arte del que más tengo conocimiento es la música. Y como siempre he sido de recomendar el arte que me gusta, se me ocurrió la idea de hacer una serie de artículos recomendando e informando de todas las bandas y artistas que se me puedan ocurrir, para hacer llegar mis experiencias, las bandas y artistas que me han hecho sentir tanto. Eso es y será "Let's Listen", y hoy quiero comenzar con mi dúo de Dream Pop preferido: Beach House.
Greetings to everyone at Hive. Today I'm excited because with this one I'm starting a series of posts that will probably stay alive a long time. Although in my introduction post I talked a lot about my love for literature and stories, being honest, the art I know the most about is music. And since I've always been someone who recommends art, I came up with the idea of doing a series of articles recommending and informing about all the bands and artists I can think of, to make my experiences reach out to you, the bands and artists that have made me feel so much. That is and will be "Let's Listen", and today I want to start with my favorite Dream Pop duo: Beach House.

Beach House es una dúo que se formó en el 2004, en Baltimore, Estados Unidos. Conformado por Victoria Legrand, de origen francés, y Alex Scally. Ambos se conocieron en la escena del Indie Rock y formaron este dúo, Victoria siendo la vocalista principal, bajista y tecladista y Alex ocupándose de la guitarra, teclado y siendo vocalista de apoyo. Beach House comenzó grabando principalmente utilizando un órgano, tambores programados y guitarra, haciendo uso de esto, grabaron su primer disco, el cuál fue distribuido por el sello Carpark Records.
Beach House is a duo formed in 2004, in Baltimore, United States. It is formed by Victoria Legrand (of French origin) and Alex Scally. Both met in the Indie Rock scene and formed this duo, Victoria being the lead vocalist, bassist and keyboardist and Alex taking care of guitar, keyboard and being a backup vocalist. Beach House began recording mainly using an organ, programmed drums and guitar. Making use of this, they recorded their first album, which was distributed by Carpark Records.
El sonido | The sound
El sello particular de Beach House es su estética sonora. Aún siendo un grupo que se originó décadas después de que el Dream Pop surgiera, Beach House ha sido de los proyectos más influyentes en el género, hasta el punto de ser uno de los primeros referentes (por no decir el primero) a la hora de hablar de este género. Beach House crea paisajes sonoros ensoñadores, sus melodías suelen ser dulces y llevar siempre una alta carga de producción atmosférica. La parte vocal siempre lleva una edición con mucha reverberación, igualmente los instrumentos suelen estar detrás de un "muro" de ecos y reverberaciones, dotando al sonido de la banda de un estilo muy envolvente y a veces psicodélico, asemejándose al Shoegaze.
The particular mark of Beach House is its sound aesthetics. Even being a group that originated decades after Dream Pop emerged, Beach House has been one of the most influential projects of it, to the point of being one of the first references (if not the first) when talking about this genre. Beach House creates dreamy soundscapes, their melodies are usually sweet and always carry a high load of atmospheric production. The vocal part always carries a lot of reverb, also the instruments are usually behind a "wall" of echoes and reverberations, giving the sound of the duo a very enveloping and sometimes psychedelic style, resembling Shoegaze.

Este dúo cuenta con una discografía lo suficientemente extensa. En un lapso de 17 años, Beach House ha lanzado 7 álbumes de estudio y una compilación. Sus dos primeros discos fueron lanzados por la disquera Carpark Records. Sin embargo, en el 2010, su tercer disco, Teen Dream, sería lanzado bajo el sello de Sub Pop, el cual sería el sello con el que el dúo se quedaría el resto de su discografía.
This duo has an extensive enough discography. In a lapse of seventeen years, Beach House has released seven studio albums and one compilation. Their first two albums were mainly released by Carpark Records. However, in 2010, their third album, Teen Dream, would be released under the Sub Pop label, which would be the label the duo would stay with for the rest of their discography. All the albums would be distributed in Europe by Bella Union.
Beach House (2006)
El álbum debut de este dúo, llevaría por nombre el mismo de la banda. Lanzado el 3 de octubre de 2006 por Carpark Records y en Europa por Bella Union, el primer proyecto de Beach House ve la luz siendo grabado en tan solo dos días, finalizando en una duración de 36min. El disco sería bien recibido por las críticas y posteriormente tendría re-ediciones en vinilo en el 2010. Este disco tiene un sonido prematuro para el dúo, asemejándose más al Indie Pop. La influencia del disco llevó al cantante y compositor The Weeknd a samplear "Master of None" en su canción "The Party & The Afterparty".
The debut album of this duo, would be named after the same name of the band. Released on October 3, 2006 by Carpark Records and in Europe by Bella Union, Beach House's first project sees the light being recorded in only two days, ending in a 36min duration. The album would be well received by critics and would later be re-released on vinyl in 2010. This album has a premature sound for the duo, resembling more to Indie Pop. The influence of the album led singer/songwriter The Weeknd to sample "Master of None" in his song "The Party & The Afterparty".
Devotion (2008)
El segundo disco del dúo le comenzaría a dar forma al sonido particular de Beach House, esta vez comenzando a tener una producción más atmosférica, haciendo usos de guitarras deslizantes y vocales reverberantes. Lanzado el 26 de febrero del 2008, "Devotion" sería el último disco del dúo distribuido por Carpark Records. Este álbum también fue distribuido en Europa por el sello Bella Union. Este álbum también fue bien recibido por la crítica y esta vez con más fama y alcance. Varias revistas de música dieron sus comentarios positivos e incluso el disco alcanzó a estar en el top 200 de Billboard en su momento. Según Nielsen SoundScan, el álbum vendió un aproximado de 49.000 copias.
The duo's second album would begin to give shape to Beach House's particular sound, this time starting to have a more atmospheric production, making use of sliding guitars and reverberating vocals. Released on February 26th, 2008, "Devotion" would be the last album of the duo distributed by Carpark Records. This album was also distributed in Europe by the Bella Union label. This album was also well received by critics and this time with more popularity and reach. Several music magazines gave their positive comments and the album even reached the Billboard top 200 at the time. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the album sold an estimated 49,000 copies.
Teen Dream (2010)
Lanzado el 26 de enero del 2010, a partir de este punto, este dúo tendría mucho más alcance. Tras firmar con Sub Pop, Teen Dream se volvió una realidad. El tercer disco de este grupo consagra la atmósfera sonora que caracteriza y rodea los proyectos de este dúo. Con canciones llenas a la par de dulzura y melancolía, Beach House consigue llegar a un nuevo nivel. Siendo un éxito en la crítica, Teen Dream tendría suficiente influencia para estar en muchas listas de mejores discos del año en el 2010. Para Mayo del 2012, este disco habría vendido un total de 140.000 copias. Varias de las canciones de este disco serían sampleadas por otros artistas, entre los que cabe mencionar al rapero Kendrick Lamar. También, la canción "Take Care" formaría parte de la banda sonora de la película Efectos Colaterales del Amor.

Bloom (2012)
Lanzado el 15 de mayo del 2012, considerado por muchos el punto álgido del dúo, "Bloom" llevaría a Beach House aún nivel de éxito nunca antes visto por ellos. El éxito sería de todas partes, tanto crítica como público. El álbum figura no solo en listas de los mejores discos del año, sino también en listas de la década. "Bloom" es probablemente el disco más influyente de la banda y también uno de los primeros álbumes a tener en cuenta cuando se trata de Dream Pop, por ser considerado el disco más sofisticado y pulido del dúo. Released on May 15, 2012, considered by many to be the duo's highest point, "Bloom" would take Beach House to a level of success never before seen by them. The success would be from all sides, both critics and public. The album would figure not only in lists of the best albums of the year, but also in lists of the decade. "Bloom" is probably the band's most influential album and also one of the first albums to consider when it comes to Dream Pop, as it is considered the duo's most sophisticated and polished record. The album features highly detailed production and the use of drums to accompany the programmed percussion that the duo has always used. In addition, this would be the duo's first album to feature the help of other artists, producers and sound engineers. "Bloom" sold approximately 41,000 copies in the first week after its release and contains one of their most popular songs: Myth.
Depression Cherry (2015)
Depression Cherry tuvo las cosas difíciles, ya que tras el éxito de Bloom, el dúo tendría que intentar mantener el mismo nivel de calidad que en dicho álbum. Legrand sufrió una crisis creativa durante el período de silencio entre este y el disco anterior. Tras tomarse unos meses y decidir olvidarse de las baterías, el dúo decidiría volver al mismo estilo de producción anterior a Bloom y este disco comenzaría a crearse junto a la ayuda de muchas personas. Depression Cherry fue lanzado el 28 de agosto del 2015. Fue bastante exitoso, teniendo más menciones en listas anuales y tuvo un aproximado de 27.000 copias vendidas en su primera semana. Además, contiene la canción más popular del dúo hasta el momento: Space Song.
Depression Cherry had a hard time, as after the success of Bloom, the duo would have to try to maintain the same level of quality as on that album. Legrand suffered a creative crisis during the period of silence between this and the previous album. After taking a few months off and deciding to forget about the drums, the duo would decide to return to the same production style as before Bloom and this album would begin to be created with the help of many people. Depression Cherry was released on August 28, 2015. It was quite successful, having more mentions in yearly charts and had an approximate 27,000 copies sold in its first week. It also contains the duo's most popular song so far: Space Song.
Thank Your Lucky Stars (2015)
El sexto disco del dúo sería una sorpresa para todos. Lanzado en menos de dos meses tras el lanzamiento de Depression Cherry, Thank Your Lucky Stars vio la luz. Muchos pensaron que el disco era un acompañamiento para su álbum anterior, pero los miembros del dúo aclararon que esta es una obra independiente. Tuvo buenas críticas y un éxito moderado en ventas, sin embargo, fue opacado por el éxito de Depression Cherry debido al corto tiempo entre cada disco, haciendo que este álbum sea de los menos reconocidos del dúo.
The duo's sixth album would be a surprise to all. Released less than two months after the release of Depression Cherry, Thank Your Lucky Stars saw the light. Many thought that the album was a companion to their previous album, but the duo's members clarified that this is a standalone work. It had good reviews and moderate success, however, it was overshadowed by the success of Depression Cherry due to the short time between each album, making this record one of the duo's least recognized albums.
B-sides and Rarities (2017)
Lanzada el 30 de junio del 2017, esta compilación contiene una serie de canciones, de las cuales 12 ya habían sido lanzadas previamente, pero en esta compilación se incluyen versiones "raras" de las mismas. Además, incluye dos canciones nuevas: "Baseball Diamond" y "Chariot". La compilación fue lanzada gracias a la idea de juntar todas las canciones sueltas del dúo y convertirlas en un lanzamiento en conjunto. Habiendo tenido buena recepción de parte de la crítica, esta compilación está más bien dedicada a los escuchantes y fanáticos del dúo que quieran adentrarse más allá.
Released on June 30, 2017, this compilation contains a number of songs, 12 of which had been previously released, but this compilation includes "rare" versions of them. It also includes two new songs: "Baseball Diamond" and "Chariot". The compilation was released thanks to the idea of putting together all the duo's single songs and turning them into a jointed release. Having been well received by critics, this compilation is rather dedicated to listeners and fans of the duo who want to dig deeper.
7 (2018)
El último disco del dúo, lanzado el 11 de mayo del 2018, llevaría su título más simple, acompañando al aura de misterio que el dúo quiso dar a este disco. Los integrantes del dúo dijeron que "esperaban que el título impulsara a las personas a mirar dentro". 7 se presenta a sí mismo con el sonido más psicodélico del grupo, sin perder el estilo característico de ellos. El disco fue creado de manera diferente a lo habitual, ya que el dúo estaba acostumbrado a grabar sus discos durante sesiones largas individuales, 7 fue grabado en 5 sesiones diferentes que posteriormente conformaron el conjunto del disco. Aclamado por la crítica y con buena recepción del público, como de costumbre, 7 fue una nueva medalla a la lista de éxitos del dúo, dejándonos a la espera de su próximo proyecto.
The duo's latest album, released on May 11, 2018, would carry their simplest title, accompanying the aura of mystery that the duo wanted to give to this album. The duo's members said they "hoped the title would prompt people to look inside." 7 presents itself with the group's more psychedelic sound, without losing their signature style. The album was created in a different way than usual, as the duo was used to recording their albums during individual long sessions, 7 was recorded in 5 different sessions that later made up the whole album. Critically acclaimed and well received by the public, as usual, 7 was a new medal to the duo's hit list, leaving us waiting for their next project.
