Hace hice 7 años, visité la comunidad de Tarmas (Estado la Guaira), durante la celebración de San Juan Bautista. Fuimos en un compartir de la Universidad. Hicimos un trabajo de investigación sobre las tradiciones de éste pueblo.
Seven years ago, I visited the community of Tarmas (La Guaira State), during the celebration of St. John the Baptist. We went in a sharing of the University. We did a research work about the traditions of this town.
Allí aprendí varias cosas las cuales quiero compartir con todos ustedes, en este día especial.
Llegamos un día 23 de junio, porque en Tarmas acostumbran a realizar la Víspera a San Juan. Una Noche antes, realizan el llamado al Santo, para que despierte, para prepararlo para ir a la Iglesia a celebrar su cumpleaños.
Este es el primer canto que escuchamos:
de este sueño tan profundo
que te venimos a cantar,
las celosías del mundo.
There I learned several things which I want to share with all of you, on this special day.
We arrived on June 23rd, because in Tarmas they are used to celebrate the Eve of St. John. One night before, they make the call to the Saint, so that he wakes up, to prepare him to go to the Church to celebrate his birthday.
This is the first song we hear:

Este primer canto es acompañado por el repique de los tambores, el cual es principalmente hecho por mujeres, mientras que los tambores son tocados en su mayoría por hombres, aunque esto no es una regla, ya que en este pueblo las mujeres pueden tocar el tambor si así lo quieren. Los tambores son del tipo llamado Cumacos (Repique, Pujao, medio bajo, burro Negro y palitos). Esa noche nos quedamos hasta las doce de la noche y nos fuimos a descansar para poder participar de las ceremonias del día siguiente.
This first song is accompanied by the beating of the drums, which is mainly done by women, while the drums are played mostly by men, although this is not a rule, since in this town women can play the drums if they want to. The drums are of the type called Cumacos (Repique, Pujao, medio bajo, burro Negro and palitos). That night we stayed until midnight and went to rest to be able to participate in the ceremonies the next day.
La mañana del 24 de junio nos trasladamos hasta la iglesia en donde todo ya estaba preparado para la misa, en la cual los cultores estaban dispuestos con los tambores para tocar, gran sorpresa la mía, la liturgia era con música de Tambor y la gente del pueblo, bailadores y bailarinas entraban a la iglesa bailando al santo y para entregar las ofrendas.
The morning of June 24 we moved to the church where everything was already prepared for the mass, in which the cultores were ready with the drums to play, to my great surprise, the liturgy was with drum music and the people of the town, dancers and dancers entered the church dancing to the saint and to deliver the offerings.
Al terminar la misa salieron a la plaza donde tenían preparado un altar para el Santo, allí comenzó el baile de tambor. Las cantoras se juntaron frente al santo y los tambores para cantarle y bailarle.
At the end of the mass they went out to the square where they had prepared an altar for the saint, there began the drum dance. The singers gathered in front of the saint and the drums to sing and dance to him.
Es el único San Juan que he visto bailar en parejas agarradas, como si fuera una guaracha. Ellos lo llaman Lejio y nos explicaron que es un baile que viene de la época colonial, tal imitando algunos bailes indígenas o europeos. Al Terminar este baile, pero sin que pare el tambor, comienza uno un poco más rápido llamado Jinca, este ya es suelto, y dicen que es un baile que proviene de la descendencia africana que llegó a esta región, en el que tanto hombres como mujeres elevan sus manos, realizan giros, es quizás una manera muy elegante de cortejo, donde tanto ambos se escogen para tomar su turno de baile.
It is the only San Juan that I have seen danced in couples holding each other, as if it were a guaracha. They call it Lejio and explained to us that it is a dance that comes from colonial times, imitating some indigenous or European dances. Los tambores recorren las calles del pueblo, bendiciendo las casas y los campos, visitan también las casas de los juanes que viven en el pueblo y de otras personas que han hecho alguna promesa al santo, por eso han dispuesto un altar frente a su casa para recibirle.
The drums go through the streets of the village, blessing the houses and fields, also visiting the houses of the juanes who live in the village and other people who have made a promise to the saint, so they have arranged an altar in front of their house to receive him.
Este día se cree que es mágico. Dicen que es el día más largo de todo el año, los pobladores aprovechan para probar suerte y realizan varios ritos para aprovechar esta magia.
This day is believed to be magical. They say it is the longest day of the whole year, the villagers take advantage of it to try their luck and perform several rites to take advantage of this magic.
Uno de ellos es que le piden a una persona llamada Juan o Juana que les corte el cabello, porque, si así lo hacen, el cabello crecerá mágicamente.
Otro consiste en averiguar si tu pareja se casará contigo. En una ponchera con agua, colocan dos agujas, a cada una le dan un nombre, si las agujas se acercan y se juntan, quiere decir que se casaran, pero si por lo contrario se alejan quiere decir que nunca se casaran. Esta misma practica la pueden realizar con dos pretendientes, para saber con cuál de los dos se va a quedar. En este caso se colocan tres agujas y se le da a cada una un nombre, las agujas que se juntan esa será la pareja que te conviene o con la que te vas a casar. También se aprovecha para leer las cartas y muchos otros ritos.

It is also used to read the cards and many other rites.
Hoy por primera vez aproveche este día mágico, y le pedí a mi esposo que se llama Juan, que cortara las puntas de mi cabello ya les contaré el próximo año si dio resultado.

Este es un gran material bastante útil y necesario para todos los que participamos en estos espacios para nuestra musica, aparte del hecho de que pudiste compartir con nosotros la oportunidad que tuviste de vivir la experiencia de las fiestas para San Juan en el pueblo de Tarma. Solo como único detalle hay que aclarar que en este caso no es necesario usar la etiqueta #cuatrovenezolano, ya que el tema nos permite ver que el instrumento no tiene participación en este material.
