What I Got

It's a Sublime Sunday and, well, that's What I Got. Sure beats a Sunday morning coming down. Been a bit busy as of late, which has kept me out of the woods for far longer than is safe but was finally able to remedy that today.

Louisville has one of the largest urban forests in the US in Jefferson Memorial Forest, made my way there to hike to Mitchell Hill Lake. Was going to get an early start and try to catch a bit of fog or golden hour light but Mother Nature had other ideas. Waiting out the rain was worth it though, practically had the place to myself.

Not entirely to myself, the ghost of the ropes course was there as well. Needed some time to ponder, do that best on my feet anyways, so 5 km of going up and down ridges was just what the doctor ordered.

Although the rain was no longer falling from the sky, it was still dripping from the trees. The pitter patter of that and the intermittent bitching of a blue jay were the only sounds breaking the morning's silence.

There was a stillness, a calmness that's hard to find in the city. Mitchell Hill Lake really reflected that.

Although photos weren't my primary motivation for being there, couldn't help but bring the Nikon and snap a few.

There's just something about being at a place like this that seems to turn the volume down a bit. Having the place to yourself makes it doubly so.

Probably could have sat there all day like a frog on a log but the sun was starting to burn though the post-rain coolness and the noisy ne'er-do-wells had escaped from church.

The sun peeking through the clouds made for some fun light, even under the canopy. Was only able to tear myself away after promises of a return at the golden hour.

So where do you go to hike and reflect?

My garden or the hill behind my house

Nice! I can't do it in my garden, just end up spotting things I need to do and get sidetracked.

It's good that you took this Nikon, because the photos came out really good. Especially those with a frame filled with forest and reflection in the water. You can get lost in these pictures. I hope you can make it to a beautiful golden hour next time. Greetings from Nikon user :)

Thank you :) It's a good place to get lost in for sure. I'll make golden hour eventually, even if I don't make it next time. Hey Nikon user! What's you shooting with?

Nikon Z6 the first one. But I hope to switch to Z6III in the future. And yours?

Ah, nice! I still haven't made the switch to mirrorless, out here running around with my trusty old D610 with the occasional assist from a borrowed D750.

Are you ever planning to switch to a mirrorless camera? I haven't owned any of the ones you mentioned. I previously used an APS-C Nikon D500 and was very happy with it. Sometimes I feel like it was better than the Z6.

With how most manufacturers have discontinued DSLR production, I suspect I will have to switch at some point. I've got nothing against mirrorless, just kind of invested in the F-mount at this point. I've heard good things about the D500, there's another photographer I run into regularly while out shooting, he was rather fond of his although he recently switched to mirrorless.

I understand. But you know that you can use the same lenses on a Nikon mirrorless camera. All you need is an F to Z mount adapter. So far, I only have one lens with Z mount and the rest are DSLR lenses.

We have to travel a bit to see such natural things, but when we get there, we feel much more relaxed after seeing them.
