Besides the magnificent landscapes in Iceland, you can also spot many abandoned properties. In fact, there are so many abandoned buildings that no one really knows the exact number but it's in thousands.
To see them then you usually need to go a little off the beaten path but some can be seen near the roads as well. I had planned to see a couple of these ruined buildings but in the end had time to see only one.
This is located in the Westfjords and is pretty much next to the road, near water. Name is Arngerdareyri Kastallin, not sure where this comes from.
As we found out, this house is not entirely abandoned anymore. Someone has started to renovate it recently, as you can see et has modern windows installed there. I have heard that people convert some of these building ruins to guesthouses, maybe the same is done with this one.
Obviously, this house is located in an absolutely beautiful location.
There is also a dock that looks to be partially collapsed.
The weather was unfamiliarly quiet on that day, it is very rare to see a day when you can't feel the wind almost at all in Iceland.
Since this area is also extremely remote, without any nearby towns and almost nonexistent traffic you can hear the almost total silence when there is no wind.
The water was calm and reflective.
This is only one abandoned example. As I said, Iceland has thousand of ghost buildings and farms in the countryside that have been left to collapse. Whenever I go back to Iceland for the third time, I make sure to include more of these places in my schedule.
Of course, you can see the exact location pinned to the @pinmapple world map.
Are those places free for anyone to claim and fix up??? Whoever got that one is lucky :)
I was wondering the same exact thing! Would take quite a bit of planning and preparations to make it through the first couple of Winters. hahaha
@castleberry Some properties are abandoned in the past for this very reason because winters can be harsh, no funds for maintaining the house means death. Even today some roads are so impassable in winter that they will not free them from snow and some towns can be closed off for weeks or even a month. This is usual though and natives are used to dealing with it, supplies are brought in by air.
I had a feeling that was the case. Thanks for answering both of us! =) Cheers
I can imagine it's hard, but if you have money for the fuel, and enough food, you are set :) ...
@wrestlingdesires I can't say for sure how this thing works but I don't think it's free. Some properties are already on private land but the majority are on the national ground so I think anyone can buy out the property and start the restoration of the house if possible.
Nice 🙌 I hope all of them get good caretakers ❤️
Perhaps the time is right to buy and restore, imagine living in a remote place still within reach of a small town?
What tranquility although winter is another story when needing provisions unless you learn how to stock up properly, grow in summer months, suppose it was a visit.
Visiting to regularly dreams may become possibilities.

In this case, the nearest town is 50km of drive away. So you really need some knowledge of sustaining yourself if living in this house. For someone who likes to live in a calm remote place and is prepared for the winter conditions, can be perfect.
Life is so short if you want it, do it. Finding ways to overcome hurdles many helpful hints out there today, having visited I am sure you have some tricks of your own up your sleeve.
