Welcome To The Exclusion Zone ☢️ Chernobyl (Ukraine)

in Photography Lovers2 years ago (edited)

Хороший день / Dobryi den’ / Hi,

Welcome to the very first post (aka part one) dedicated to our little travelling across Ukraine. Let's start with Chernobyl!

In Kyiv, we hop in a van which takes us to the Exclusion Zone (EZ) and beyond it. Randomly, we will see the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Pripyat, the Duga radar. EZ is an area of ~30 km radius from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. You are not allowed to enter EZ without accredited tour guide.

Sorry about camouflaged photos. I have not managed to obtain full consent to publish photos with faces (except dogs and other animals) as of the date of publishing this post😁

There it is! On the left - the sarcophagus where we are going to shortly. On the right, incomplete reactors 5 and 6 where we are not going at all. The river is Pripyat.

Before observing the power plant, we have to eat something. In order to enter the Canteen 19, we have to go through this radiological detection portal. Do we pass it?!

Yep! As a reward, we can eat side by side real Chernobyl liquidators and workers at the same canteen. They serve usual European meal. I must say it is quite Okay. Their brioche-something is delicious! Soup = no surprise = borscht.

Another one! They are very friendly and not mutated (surprisingly, for some people).

With fully belly, we get closer to the plant. But before that, we stop at this place, sort of like of the square with statues and monuments. On the left, the sarcophagus is partially visible.

The Prometheus statue. Before the disaster, it was placed in Pripyat.

Nearby we find this bridge. Going fishing?
IMG_20180831_143344.jpg

Sort of. In the box, they have fish feed they use to attract fish.
IMG_20180831_143018.jpg

Believe or not, there is plenty of fish. If you are lucky, you will see giant catfish (afraid not our case).

At last! We are approaching the Chernobyl nuclear power plant site.

This is the closest we get. This monument honors Chernobyl liquidators and constructors of the sarcophagus.

Level of radioactivity in normal😉

That is all for today. If you like it, stay tuned as more cool stuff from our Ukrainian adventures back in 2018 will definitely come. In the meantime, don't forget to check out my Pinmapple profile to see all places I have visited on the map!

Hmm, tohle bude hodně zajímavá série... Obědové zákoutí s měřičem radiace vypadá lákavě :D Ale ty smajlíky Emku sluší, musím sportovně uznat, že jsi odvedl lepší práci než já tady :D

@tipu curate

😮 Thanks!

These were some very interesting shots. I think this is probably the closest i will get to Chernobyl and as far as radioactivity... that is a good thing. Great shots and those monuments and statues were really cool. Thanks for sharing.

If you stick to the known areas/paths, the radioactivity is low, in normal, even lower than in plane, if I recall correctly😀

I am happy you like this post😉

That's interesting to hear.
Cheers

Oh wow. What a hell of a experience! Now that's what I call following the footprints of the past! You are very brave and I'm sure it will remain a journey that will never be forgotten.

🤗 Yeah, it is kind of different experience, definitely worth it. One day I would love to come back and explore more...

From what I can remember the area is still highly radioactive and it is not recommended to stay there for a long time. For a radioactive area the dogs look pretty normal haha. I wonder how many years will it take for the area to recover after this

Sure there are places with higher radioactivity, but those common (not just) tourist spots, they are kind of safe (they say😄). After all, hundreds of people work there every day, some even permanently live there, still they do not have 3 arms, for instance. Anyhow, for sure it does not mean that the radioactivity may have zero affect from long perspective (like higher chance to get cancer). But diseases like that are quite common here as well🤔

Interesting! I do wonder why people haven't left that place, I would not have stayed if I were in their place

Sorry about camouflaged photos. I have not managed to obtain full consent to publish photos with faces (except dogs and other animals) as of the date of publishing this post

Oh! I was wondering why that lady’s face with beautiful skin was covered.

And for the dogs, how come they were so calm around you guys? You gave them something to eat?

Dogs are friendly there. I guess the reason could be that they are simply accustomed to tourists, and from time to time some drop something for them (although not our case). Or perhaps they are calm due to the radioactivity🤔 (😆)

(although not our case)

Nice. I think it shouldn't be allowed. But good to know they were friendly towards you.
