We have many birds here that have only one foot and some with both feet gone.
Leave only your footprints is a popular saying, but so many don't, and this is the result.
This is a Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), in a freshwater dam and its legs got caught in some fishing nylon string waste that we call "gut". Many fishermen have the habit of throwing their nylon waste into the water.
Not only birds, but other wild water creatures are strangled by the waste. A few years ago, I had to cut a bird free from the nylon, as it would not have made it. It was a Blacksmith Lapwing.
I am not the only one that is worried about this.
Now we will have a look at the beach.

Hooks and lines caught on branches and debris can harm animals and cause them to become tangled on legs, wings, and beaks of birds. Geese, ducks and gulls sustain crippling injuries after one or both of their legs become wrapped in fishing line. A hook caught in a beak or mouth can make eating painful or impossible, resulting in death by starvation.

This is an African Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) and the sad thing is that they are on the red endangered list.
Yep! You see that its left foot is gone and now it cannot sleep on the rocks anymore.
I wonder how it eats, as they need both feet to anchor them on the rocks when they break the oysters loose.
A perfect target for predators.
Finally, birds have an intricate design, and they need all of their body parts to function. But sadly, some in this life don't give a damn about the birds.
It always makes me angry when I see this. I mean, what does it cost to have a bag with you for the waste? Be it hanging from you belt at shore, or at your feet in your boat. Littering is a terrible evil.
Imagine what it is to go through life with only foot and how difficult it would be. Now as humans, we have all kinds of medical inventions and maybe the is a false foot available to ease the situation. Wildlife do not have these interventions and the two birds that I show here's days are numbered.
They will not live for much longer and yes, it is a heartbreaking situation.
I am sorry to share this post with you, but if it can even make us think about the littering situation, then I would be very happy.

When anglers cast off, the fishing line can sometimes get caught on branches nearby. If you complain to the angling club, they will say it's the irresponsible anglers that leave fishing line behind. I can't see responsible ones trying to untangle the line stuck in a tree either. You can't win.
Oh yes, and the buck is always passed, instead of getting in and fixing it. They can blame others for years to come and in the meantime the wildlife will continue to suffer.

*That is so, so sad. The planets water bodies are not dumps and should not be treated in such a despicable manner. So many people have no empathy for any creatures.
It breaks my heart every time that I see this and so much is wrong in the oceans lately. Apart from the discarded fishing lines, the beaches are littered, and the sea continues to wash up plastic items. Tons of oil are leaked from tanker ships, and I have only mentioned the tip of the iceberg.
Sheer madness, as we are gradually destroying mankind.

It is very sad, indeed. All it takes is just a little consciousness... I realize that sometimes fishermen get their lines caught on snags and such, but those are often in boats and can still remove 95% of the line if only they take the time.
That is exactly what I am talking about, as a little care can save many lives. But lately everybody is in a hurry, and matters got worse since the Covid pandemic, as most people are now out to try and recover their financial losses during the lengthy lockdown times.
But still, this is no excuse for the vast littering that is taking place.

Yes, we have a wildlife rescue service here, but they are overloaded and we normally take the birds to our local vet. Only if I can catch them, or if they are too sick to fly.

It's probably a good idea to check those frequently that are without feet, as they'll be getting weak if they aren't able to adapt? I hope the shorebird has found a different method of hunting :(

Oh yes, we often go there, but up to now they all seem to be okay. If they get weak, they will sit on the side and then I can get them. The shorebird is a Moorhen and they eat water plants, small fish, snails, small frogs and worms, so I suppose it will be alright unless it loses the other foot.
