As is the tradition it seems the moment I start getting a bit of pep in the step and momentum in terms of development work something always ends up absolutely derailing my efforts. My workstation had been acting a bit odd over the past few months, with simple things like a light tap to the computer box causing the video to shit the bed.. Eventually it came to the point the 1st of the 4 PCI-E slots my Asrock Tiachi x399 Motherboard has wouldn't work at all with my Sapphire Vega 56/64 GPU. Because Fuck my life I guess? I couldn't figure out why 1st slot was not working as mechanically everything looked fine and it didn't smell like burnt electronics / magic smoke as hardware sometimes does when it fails.
In a stroke of genius (we are talking about me here, I'm some idiot savant at best) I switched it to the 2nd PCI-E slot and magically it worked again...
AWESOME! However, the same issue of any time I moved the PC or did so much as plug in a USB the whole video output would shit the bed.. Troubling but still workable.
Made sure the GPU was correctly installed and the bracket holding the back end was tightened up, and it worked for a while. Until one day I once again accidentally bumped the PC with my knee, causing the video to crap out again.. Except this time a restart didn't yield any video output and my "Dr. Debug" LED display was showing a "b6" error.. Looked it up on my phone and lo and behold it meant the GPU BIOS wasn't initiating properly, so I tried switching it to the 3rd PCI-E port... No Bueno.. Then the 4th PCI-E port.. again same error: b6
Upon taking the GPU out of the workstation to tear it down do see if any component had fried on it, something like a leaky capacitor or whatnot I noticed that the 9th PCI-E slot pin was all but completely burnt off.. Wonderful.
So plan is to grab a donor PCI-E golden finger connector thingy from some other hardware and see if I can solder that new finger on to replace the damaged one.. Entirely unsure if this will unfuck the card but it's the only physical thing wrong with it I could track down.. hopefully it's not scrambled the BIOS on the GPU.

LMFAO )I've been wearing many different types of software development field hats for a few years now, which has probably been noticed by folks around here as a lot of the projects I was working on fell onto the back burner chasing work that had immediate income potential.. Super glad the boss of the medical software side of things I've been working with for the past year or so offered to ship me an Nvidia based 12GB GeForce 4070 GPU to replace the AMD Radeon 8GB Vega 56/64 to get me coding again. Not only has he saved my ass for his code, but also saved my ass on my ability to finish the Hive.Loans code (Grab some HLSHARE to support the project & earn profit when it goes live) and get that going before end of year if all things go well.
The GPU itself is worth more (even now) than what I'm currently making a month while on EIA until I can stabilize my income to the point I'm self sufficient again. I've got 3 months to find a new place to live which is fine as well, eviction notice isn't surprising, my friend I am living with bless his heart is a good dude but takes my request for cleaning as personal attacks so time to move on.
Having a place to code where my feet aren't literally freezing will be nice.. Lots of life changes and whatnot but at the end of the day I'm not sad, onwards and upwards. Excited to get coding on my workstation again once this GPU shows up supposedly on Halloween day. Will keep everyone posted!
