Lessons from my Mother's Garden

Plants and persons have many similarities. However, human beings are more responsible because we have the capacity to share the fruits of our labor and the joy of giving depends greatly on the motivation why we share.

Lesson 1: It takes time for a plant to bloom.

The intricate web of life on Earth connects all living beings, from the tiniest microorganisms to the grandest trees, and, of course, human beings. While the comparison between plants and persons may seem unusual, it serves as a reminder of the profound interconnectedness of all life forms on our planet. This interconnectedness is not just a biological fact but also an opportunity for humans to exercise their unique capacity for responsible sharing.

Lesson 2. Peaceful Coexistence

Both plants and humans are living organisms, and they share fundamental characteristics of life. They require sustenance, experience growth, and partake in reproduction. This recognition underscores the profound interconnectedness of all life forms on Earth. While the nature of this interconnectedness differs from that of humans, who consciously shape their environment and society, it is a vital reminder that all living beings are part of the same web of life.

Humans, with their higher cognitive and moral capacities, have a greater responsibility for their actions. Unlike plants, which operate based on instinct and biological processes, humans have the unique ability to make deliberate choices, understand the consequences of their actions, and adapt their behavior to benefit the environment and other living beings. This responsibility extends beyond the immediate needs of survival, urging humans to consider the impact of their actions on a broader scale.

Lesson 3. Everything has a proper place.

One of the defining characteristics of humanity is the capacity to share the fruits of their labor. This capacity represents a conscious and intentional choice to allocate resources, knowledge, and assistance to others. Unlike plants, which provide for their surroundings as part of their natural growth, humans can choose to share the results of their work, whether in the form of material goods, information, or emotional support. This ability to share is a fundamental aspect of cooperation and community in human societies, where shared resources foster growth and development.

Lesson 4. To at least survive, one must be well-rooted

The joy of giving is not solely derived from the act itself but is greatly influenced by the reasons that drive it. When people share with genuine altruism, empathy, and a sincere desire to make a positive impact on others, it often leads to a deep sense of fulfillment and happiness. Conversely, when sharing is driven by selfishness, personal gain, or ulterior motives, it may not generate the same positive emotional and social outcomes. Therefore, the motivation behind sharing carries great significance.

Human beings have a distinctive role to play in shaping the world, one that comes with great responsibility. By using their capacity for responsible sharing with empathy and goodwill, humans have the potential to positively impact their societies and the well-being of all living beings. It's a reminder that as conscious beings, humans can make choices that benefit not only themselves but also the entire interconnected web of life that sustains our planet.
