THIS IS THE WAY WE WASH OUR GOATS

in #homesteading6 years ago

Yes, really. We had our reasons.

There are certain kinds of "goat lice" that can show up on goats, especially in the colder months. Usually once the temperature starts heating up they disappear on their own, but we didn't want to wait. We figured that the sooner we could rid our goats of their uninvited "friends" the better. Interestingly enough, goats can be sort of like cats when it comes to getting wet.

WORKING ON THE GOAT WASH - YEAH!

Since we do not have water on the whole property yet, to get some to the goats we needed to fill some buckets and bring them over to that area on the trailer. While we do look forward to the future where such tasks will be easier, for now we've just got to do what we've got to do.

@Mama-pepper had picked up some shampoo for animals with lice, and we also got a few brushed to help us wash them and make sure that the shampoo would make it to the skin level beneath the hair. Since we have zero experience washing goats we wanted to be prepared.

The first step was to get some of the goats. We started small with "Of" and "The." Here you can see that I had a lot of helpers, which can come in handy for tasks like this.

We got "King" too, since both he and his mom, Daisy, had some goat lice as well.

These little ones didn't seem to mind the water too much. To start with we tried to just make that all of their hair was wet. Once they were soaked to a satisfactory level, it was time for the next step in the process.

With the help of some @little-peppers we began to lather the kids and work the shampoo into the skin. Thankfully, these little ones didn't care too much about this step either.

To be safe and make sure that Daisy would stay still, we used her goat milking stand. This stand sure is coming in handy.

Since we didn't have enough water to really rinse them like we should, we decided to move the wet and lathered goats up to a hose. Thankfully, we already had the trailer hooked up and ready to go. If you saw my post yesterday about walking Daisy on a leash, this is the reason that we wound up taking her for a walk. We walked her to the trailer and then took her for a ride.

The pressure of the hose and the amount of water available worked way better than trying to rinse them with water from the buckets.

Daisy was less comfortable getting hosed than the kids, but they all did a good job and we tried to make it thorough but quick. Soon they were shampoo free and ready to dry.

After a ride back to the land, we placed them back in their pens. Later the @little-peppers combed them out. Hopefully the anti-lice shampoo was effective. Like I mentioned earlier, these lice should leave when the weather warms up anyway, we just didn't want to wait. Also, in case you are wondering, these lice are "species specific" and only like goats, so we should be safe.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Why do you raise goats?

Good thing the lice are species specific. It would be a heck of a job to shampoo sheep! lol

Pictures looking so great :)
Thanks for share my friend!

nice photograpy.this is great work.

it is very impressive that I hope you have a happy day with your loved ones, thank you for your part

in our place also very many goats that get skin disease,
what causes @papa-pepper,
either because of the cage or because of the weather.

A clean goat is a happy goat!

You kids are cute and I love the way you are taking care of your goats Papa. Am pretty sure they will look more healthier by washing them.

seems like @little-peppers had so much fun with goats.

a harmonious family, all done together, bathing the goat is a fun thing @papa-pepper

Your job is amazing, it's worth it for our example. Your extraordinary spirit can be our motivation

i am @nadiasteem

I always wanted to go to your post, but I was constrained by the ever-exhausted bandwidth. If I have no problem with Bandwidth, I always come to your post because I'm your fan. I really like your posts very consistently.

Our dairy cows are going through a lice epidemic as well. I used "eprinex" at the beginning of February because the vet said it doesn't affect the meat or milk and is way better than ivomec. Guess what $70 jug of crap later it didn't work and the lice is worse! So I'm back to dusting with DE, apple cider vinegar, mms in their water. Can't wait for the green grass to come. Lots of farmers in the area are having lice trouble, apparently the critters are becoming immune to all the drugs that are dumped into cows routinely. Working on a better solution...

We use DE and Apple Cider Vinegar too!

The lice always attack my goats, what is the name of the animal shampoo that you used, maybe i can also try it?

I'll have to ask @mama-pepper or look it up. I'll try to get back to you later.

I will appreciate

Goats are the best lawnmowers you can buy! Such fun spirited animals I miss being around them.

Never washed a goat but did have one try to eat my hat :)

Goodness gracious that almost looks fun. "Papa Headchang" keeps suggesting we have goats, I am not so sure.
And yeah we really do call each other Mamma & Pappa at my house. :)

LOL! "Papa Headchange" has a nice ring to it!

Well really we just say papa but I figured I would be all formal for the internet lol

that's was a solid team work @papa-pepper

Proof of washing goats 😑😐🙂☺😃😆😂

Very diverse types of animal colors

With such helpers you can turn mountains.

In spite of everything I think the kids enjoyed their bath and in fact with the hose it is much more practical than with the buckets of water.

Today I learned something new. My parents farmed with goats but never knew they could get lice. Thank you very much.

@papa-pepper, that's a very good lessons I have learnt there on goat washing, although different culture with different ways of goat washing

That's perfect example of humanity. Great work out there

THAT's a first...never heard of washing goats before.

Hola muy bueno tu blog !! Me encanta!!!
Gracias!!

Great job. Love you @little-peppers .

Awwwwww but goats really hate water being poured on them. But its all good. All thanks to the whole supportive and happy family

Winter lice? Now I’ve heard it all. Does this occur on all animals or just goats?

Lice on goats are parasites. It's better as you removed them now instead of waiting them to be removed during the hot weather.

wow, you are a great family, your child looks very happy when bathing goat, this is amazing friend

workin' at the goat wash...

That looks like a bunch of fun.

Something you might want to think about as you get more and more stock that will all need this sort of treatment at some stage, is what we call a 'sheep dip'.

It's a small narrow trench that you fill with water and whatever insecticide you need to and then you walk the animals through it. It's deep enough that they have to swim, so they get a good penetration and treatment.

You can also give them a good rubbing with a broom while they are swimming to the far end. It's not overly stressful for the animals and you could even do the larger animals like cattle no problem. (no chance of them kicking out and hitting a little pepper)

If you placed it somewhere near your boundary you could lend/ rent it out to you neighbors to do their stock as well.

All I could hear once I read the title was - this is the way we wash our goats, wash our goats, this is the way we wash our goats, so early in the morning. Great time for the kiddos I bet.

Your one hitec goat farmer bro..

Learned new about goats....I would reason that the goats would have lice in the warmer seasons more likely than the winter time.

I sure hope wet goat does not smell as bad as wet dog! Woo Hoo!!!

It looks like washing goats is a lot like washing horses. It would make sense because they are similar in terms of shape, but I am no farmer or cattle expert.

looks like some good old family fun! It makes me want to get some for my family.

A clean goat is a beautiful thing!! :-D

Hahahaha you really had a filled day. I like the fact that your adorable armies made it easier. Yeah, saw the post about daisy on a leash. Yeah, i feel the hose would be better anyway...but it would be serious work, getting all of them there. Well done Papa, i am sure you had fun doing it.

So much family bonding and fun! We just acquired a couple of beauties.
God bless!

what sort of soap did you use?
