Introducing The Greedy Vegan

in #introduceyourself6 years ago (edited)

Hello!!

Hi my name’s Jodie and if you told me 6 years ago that I would be vegan, I would have laughed – a lot. I have always been a massive foodie with a never ending stomach. I’m the least fussy eater and believe in trying everything once (obviously now that excludes all animal products)! Being half Chinese/Malay, food has always been a massive part of my life – everything revolves around food in my family. Growing up, my uncles, aunties, cousins, grandparents etc. etc. always insisted on keeping my plate full – before you had a chance to finish the last bite of your meal, they’d be spooning more onto your plate. This is probably where my reputation of being ‘the feeder’ among my friends and family began.

I’ve always been a huge animal lover so eating meat always felt a little weird, but due to societal norms, I just didn’t really question eating it up until I was 19 years old. It all suddenly changed when I was watching a video on Facebook of a pet pig begging for food at the dinner table – it reminded me of my dogs and it hit me – there’s no difference between pigs and dogs? Why should we adore one and farm / eat the other? So I turned vegetarian and was vegetarian for 4 years.

I'm sure people would be disgusted if someone said monkey was a large part of their diet, but why is that any different to pigs or cows or lambs?

I felt happy that I was doing my part in saving the animals, but after watching videos of what happens in farms and reading articles of what happens behind the scenes, I realised that the dairy and egg trade was actually more cruel than the meat trade because the animals lives are prolonged for their produce – I started to feel like a bit of a hypocrite. I went through an internal battle because I just loved food too much – what about burgers? Pizza? Burritos? CHEESE?! But with veganism becoming more and more popular, the options are just growing and growing. I told myself I would gradually go vegan and try all of the vegan options so I knew what I can and can’t eat. But I was pleasantly surprised at all of the options I had, and how easy it is to make delicious vegan food which is actually better than foods I’ve had pre-veganism. I converted straight away and would never look back. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything, and it’s all guilt free :)

What you’ll find here:

FOOD

I want the world to know that being vegan doesn't mean missing out on anything, it's just about adapting. I want to share my delicious (and simple) vegan recipes inspired by foods I thought I would miss. Recipes for all the food people mention when they’re like “you’re vegan? How can you live without [FILL THE BLANK]?!“. Whether you’re already a vegan, a vegetarian thinking of going vegan (or not), or even a meat eater who just wants to try something different – there will be something here for everyone. You really don’t need to feel like you’re missing out. The food I’ve had since turning vegan has been far more exciting and flavoursome than most of the food I’ve had before. I haven’t yet stumbled across anything that can’t be ‘veganised’ – pizzas, burgers, pastas, curries, desserts and sweet treats. Here's a snapshot below of my instagram page, @the.greedy.vegan, showing my food consumption the past week - I've had a busy week with lunch/dinner plans for inspiration! You’ll find those sorts of recipes here. Food so good that it’ll make people question whether it’s actually vegan.

Yes, this is really all vegan!!

There is a preconception that being a vegan is really difficult, expensive and time-consuming (and I even thought that was the case before I converted), but it’s really not. The meals I have been making have been just as simple and quick as meals I had been making as a vegetarian. You just need to swap out some of the ingredients out for ones without animal products – butters, milks, even eggs are replaceable.

As I’m sure you are aware Vegan’s have a reputation of eating like rabbits, but I wouldn’t feed my rabbit pasta and burgers and curries and cakes… You can also still be a vegan and eat junk food (I would really struggle otherwise).

Here are a few of my creations so far: brownies, cookies, lasagna, 'meat'balls and a 'chicken' stir-fry! There is plenty more exciting new recipes coming, so stay tuned!!! If there is anything you guys want to see 'veganised' let me know and I'll give it a shot!!

TRAVEL

Who doesn't love to travel?! With a full time job in central London, holidays are essential!! I need holidays as something to look forward to - so when the office life gets a little draining, I can daydream about my next adventure.

I've just booked a holiday to Mexico and Belize - so stay tuned for tips on traveling as a vegan. I've done a few trips around Europe eating a plant based diet which ended up being really easy. Amsterdam and Stockholm were both VERY vegan friendly, not only were the trips totally struggle-free, the food was DELICIOUS. It will be interesting to see how I get on on the other side of the world! In the past it's been difficult being a vegetarian abroad, so I assume this will be a challenge - but we shall see!

It's true! Even I only realised this after turning a vegan diet myself! :)

Good day! Vegans are bunch of pretty beautiful creatures. Got a close friend who's a vegan and yoga instructor at the same time. She looks really young at her age 34. She looks like 18 or early 20's. I think that's what healthy eating and lifestyle can do. I welcome you @thegreedyvegan. You've come to the right place. Steemit is a great platform to practice your craft and share your beliefs. I wish you all the best. Steem on!

Hey Jodie, congrats on joining Steemit! It's great to have another awesome vegan here.💚

Haha that's what I used to say! You never know 😂

True that!
Just like having a tattoo. I used to say that I will never have one but I have 5 now. 😂

Same here!! They're SO addictive! I got my first two last year, and already know what I want for my third, forth, fifth, tenth..................

Hahahaha that’s gonna be a lot...

LOL This great! I always thought i'd have a tattoo but I never did. said id never be vegan and now i am, for health reasons as well, so i don't do the junk side of it but still It all looks very tasty!
Welcome! @thegreedyvegan I think its great you have broken away from ur cultural norms. I know how difficult this can be. I'm half Austrian and it is perfectly healthy to eat animal products, my grandma thinks i'm hurting my body by going vegan, she just doesn't understand.
I'm new here too so I hope you have time to check my intro out http://steem.link/bLD24

Welcome looking forward to seeing your recipes.

Welcome to steemit :D

You have a great introduction post! Really love the fact how you describe why you became vegan! I always try to eat vegan but it fails when I want to go eating outside ^^
Already waiting for some vegan food posts of you :D The preview looks really really delicious!!!

Thanks so much!!

It's way easier than I thought it would be! I thought my social life would die when I went vegan but so many restaurants are now putting vegan options on their menus :)

I'm just about to share my first post so check it out!!!

Welcome fellow plant-muncher. Looking forward to your recipes and travel posts about Belize. It's on my list too. Love scuba diving and that famous blue hole looks tempting. Enjoy the ride!

Thanks!! I cannot wait, I'm doing my PADI next weekend so will be doing some diving when I get there! We're definitely going to visit the blue hole too - I'll let you know how I get on :)

I'm just getting started on steemit myseflt, but I come with years of trading experience. I post daily charts on crypto currencies if you are interested.

Love the vegan lifestyle. My wife and I just lost 83 pounds on a modified paleo diet (Modified as I eat very little meat and may give it up completely)

https://steemit.com/food/@bycoleman/how-i-lost-83-pounds-on-the-modified-paleo-diet-in-less-than-6-months

Thanks very much!
Congratulations on losing 83 pounds that must of been really challenging, you should both be proud :)
A lot of people think that eating a vegan diet, it's hard to get enough protein - but they're wrong! I'm feeling better than ever!

I know exactly what your talking about.
Most people don't even think they can give up pizza and live.

Yes, we both feel SO much better. It's great to be alive again.

Many blessings!

Who needs to give up pizza!?! I've had some really tasty vegan ones that are just as good :)

Yes, I see that you do have some nice alternatives and great looking dishes.
Since I don't eat dairy, it's often difficult to get a decent substitution.

For me, we stay away from carbs so the crust is a problem. And of course for vegans, the meat.

But as you say there are very tasty alternatives and I eat plenty -- without needing what most would say is essential.

BTW: I'm following you so I can keep up with some of your recipes!

Welcome to Steemit! :)

Thanks, good to be here!

Hi Welcome to Steem. 82dac99-285x300.jpgCongratulations! It's an awesome community. I followed you. Please follow back. Good Luck. We ar3 doing a show in 2 weeks with all vegan wine. have a good day lady!

I love how you introduce not only the vegan diet but the vegan lifestyle! There is so much more to veganism behind bananas and kale and its bloggers like you that help show this to the global community.

Hello, Jodie, and welcome to Steemit.

I've been seeing more and more vegans on this platform, and by now I think you're the 6th that I've followed in the past few weeks. Hmmmm, makes me wonder. (You're the second one today.)

Re your comment about "not missing out, but adapting," that is so true. For 4 years, I lived in India, where the norm is vegetarian, with the alternative being "non-veg" – i.e., those wierdos (like me) who eat meat.

Often in India, there were so many more veg choices, and very little meat. I'd go for days without eating any meat, and hardly even noticed. All the food (veg food, that is) was delicious and of course hearty and nutritious.

So when someone says they "need" meat to feel strong or just to feel satiated, that's like a Japanese person saying they "need sushi." That is, they don't, and it's nonsense.

Anyway, I look forward to reading more interesting posts from the greedy vegan. Leave some for us!!

I love that!! It seems like it's becoming more and more popular so quickly, people are slowly becoming more open minded to it which is great. Even if people just ate vegan for one day a week, they would make such a difference :)

Thanks for the support!

Welcome to Steemit Jodie! What a great intro post and amazing photos! You can tell by the food pics that you're a foodie, those foods look so delicious! Just followed you :)

I'm a fellow vegan and have just joined Steemit myself. Looking forward to your post about your coming trip.

Thanks fellow vegan!! Glad you enjoyed the post, there will be PLENTY more delicious food pics!

Your food all looks amazing; I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have to post! It's fascinating that any flavor and texture from a traditional meal can be replicated with plants and be just as delicious yet much more healthy.

Also, having been around a lot of pigs, I can definitely attest that they are at least as smart as dogs, if not smarter. They can even learn all the same tricks and then some!

Thanks so much! I've been so amazed at what you can do with plants - a lot of the time the substitutes are way tastier than the real thing :)

Aww you're lucky to have spent a lot of time with pigs - they are amazing, I would love to get myself a little micro pig!!

So much talk of veganism on Steemit, its great. I am not a vegan, but i have been in the past. Now, I eat what I want with no restrictions, but actually that is always vegetarian and mostly vegan. All my friends seemed to have fallen back into carnivorous ways now they are in their middle age. So fantastic to see younger people here acting on their beliefs and principles. Very encouraging.

Yes I am loving all of the support, it's amazing! When I went vegetarian a few years ago people would always question me on why, but surprisingly I haven't once been integrated about why I've turned vegan. Times are changing it seems!! :)

Hey Jodie! Welcome to Steemit! :)

Hello ! looking forward to more of your posts here!

Welcome to Steemit ! :) I'm vegetarian but i will try to eat vegan food for day at least haha

While I'm an omnivore, I can truly say there are some delicious vegan recipes that are far better in taste and healthy eating.

In fact, when vegan friends serve a dish at a get-together, rarely are there any leftovers.

Best regards!

Peace.

Welcome @thegreedyvegan!

Ever make it to Denmark? I lived there for work and traveled to the UK a few times. Loved the history in both places. Much more exciting than the historical stuff in the states.

Another vegan joins the steemit dream team, welcome!

Welcome to Steemit! I felt like I could completely relate to everything you wrote! I'm Vietnamese so my whole life revolves around food so my transition to Vegan was pretty much focused on how I'm going to be able to eat everything still hahha. Thankfully it grew my insta the.tinykitchen and also this so the options are endless for vegan food! Will be following you and checking out your insta too :)

It's crazy how many options there are out there! Any the food is actually so much more exciting than non-vegan food as there are endless ways to eat the same things. And most importantly, you don't feel so guilty eating junk food, because its vegan! haha.

Nice instagram page too, I've followed and look forward to seeing what else you share!

Yaay can't believe there is a vegan tag was v surprised (and happy) to find it :) 💚

I know same here! It was trending last week too :) very pleased!!!!

Welcome to steemit . More power! ;)

Welcome to Steemit! I love your tattoo!

thanks!!! It hurt like a bytch but it was totally worth it haha

Hi Jodie, welcome on steemit! I am a fellow vegan, looking forward to your travel and cooking posts! Maybe you also want to take part in my #dailycupofcoffee contest? Would love it! CU

I can imagine how hard it would have been for you at first, i admire the heart you have for the animals and other living things consumed by humans dailyKoala.jpg, this kind of act should be patronized by everyone.
cu doss to you @thegreedyvegan for your inspiring courage
i think i will love to take your foot step soon!!!

thanks so much! I love them, it makes me sad that people seem to take advantage of their power. I don't think we have any right to decide which animals live or die - it just doesn't seem fair!

Hi Jodie ,welcome to steemit world. You writed very nice and very explanatory. I've new signed up. I need your support. I hope you will give me your support. BTW you are very beautiful :) Good Luck.

follow for follow. please :)

Welcome to steemit. I follow you

Thanks for the follow :)

Let me know if you have a moment but I’d love to discuss with you, your thoughts on genetically modified food for vegans. Being that if we all went vegan we couldn’t support the volume with out it.

I will be honest, I am not educated enough on GMO foods to comment - but the reason I chose to turn vegan was so that I wasn't contributing to all of the animal's lives that are taken every day. I just don't want to be part of that and live with the guilt. There are many different reasons people turn vegan, and I think if it makes them happy then why not :)

Hi! I so relate to this. Awesome to have you here and seeing the vegan community growing on steemit... Looking forward to your posts :)

Thanks so much! Awesome to be here, I've followed you and look forward to what you share :)

Welcome! Look forward to reading more...
