Find out what kind of mornings you like, spend a few days with those kind of mornings.
Make sure you get up in time, regardless of when you go to bed. I recommend going to bed somewhat early

Go to bed 5 minutes earlier every night until you hit the time 8 hours before you want to start getting up.

That's a solid idea. Gradually adjusting bedtime could make waking up earlier feel less brutal. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes over a few weeks

Always been a night owl who never went to sleep prior to midnight before that.

That's impressive! Shifting from a night owl to waking up at 5 or 6 is a huge change. Definitely motivates me to stick with the gradual bedtime adjustment
