The gift of LIVE MUSIC!

in #life6 years ago (edited)

For most of us, music is a crucial part of out daily lives. Some have strict preferences and others, like me, listen to whatever their mood dictates. A lot of studies have shown the power of music to reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels quite dramatically and we can all agree that listening to our favorite tracks makes us more relaxed.

Music is also known to have a massive impact on babies' brains. Some experts recommend playing Mozart to babies even before they are born, as it encourages brain development and can even make them more intelligent.

Back in the day, before Edison invented recorded sound, all music was live. Now we have the convenience to listen anywhere to anything we like, but is it the same?

When we listen to recorded music, we actually hear very little of the original performance. It's so edited and tweaked that the band may not have even played the whole thing together. A lot of what we hear is the work of technicians rather than musicians. Every sound is perfected until they obtain the very best version, and though we might be happy to hear a 'perfect song', we don't realize that the soul of the music is lost. Human heart rates go up and down, and when instruments are played together, magic happens! Recorded music may give you availability and convenience, even perfection; but it won't give you magic.

Our son has been very lucky to hear live music quite early in his life, thanks to a bunch of amazing people running 'Music for Miniatures' in the South West of England: http://www.musicforminiatures.co.uk/.
Parents and carers can enjoy performances by brilliant artists, while babies can move about and make all sorts of noise without disturbing anyone.

This is Vinny at 10 months having a great time!

(I am sorry about the portrait videos! I was so excited, I didn't know what I was doing..)

I think watching anything live, has a different feel, and it's a more unique experience This is a perfect one

Yes, you feel more connected with the experience. Thank you for you comment.

Lovely kid you have there.... Vinny looks so happy :)

What a cool idea Music for Miniatures is!

I just found out yesterday that Melbourne, my home town, has been voted the live music capital of the world. I was really surprised by that. I guess I'd developed this negative mindset of most live music venues having made way for a bunch of poker machines so it made me excessively happy to know that over 100,000 people go to listen to live ,usic each weekend. It makes me happy to think of that many people experiencing that pleasure. The only thing better would be getting out amongst it myself but I'm unfortunately housebound these days.

I love that intangible human connection that comes from a bunch of people playing together at once, in the same room, to a live audience. That connection becomes like an extra band member. Soul-strengthening :)

Thank you so much for your comment. I am really sorry you can't join any of the live concerts. Can I ask why?

I have ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), which is a bummer. I've been stabilised enough in the past to go out and enjoy, so I'm hopeful I will be able to again in the future.

Fingers crossed for that!!

music sometime is really touching!

Absolutely! That actual physical visitation we feel from a particular note or chord is not the same or completely absent at times.

You can't beat live music, and starting at such a young age, how cute :)

Upvoted! I love the video of the kids on drums. They look so happy playing and listening to music. What a lovely scene to see everyday =)

Thank you so much! We didn't even expect him to enjoy it this much to be honest! We try to take him every month and he loves every show.

Hey - introducing your son to live music early is awesome - I just wrote about my own boy's love of music and steemed it just then if you want to listen to what he's doing, but he's 20 now. He blames it on me dragging him around to festivals and always playing music too him. Going to a gig with him tonight in Melbourne, quite pleased that he's not embarrassed of his parents. I tell you what, it was a proud Mum moment watching my boy on stage after all these years watching OTHER people on stage! Brought a tear to my eye - or two. My girlfriend turned around to me and said: 'do you know that lovely boy on the drums came out of your vagina!!' which was funny albeit crass - but yeah, that's how I felt - wow, I made that! xxx

That must be the most amazing feeling! I hope I'll get to see my own son on stage when he's grown up. His dad has a wonderful voice so fingers crossed! Thank you so much for your comment.
