Sometimes it amazes me a bit how people who are generally so logical, clear-headed, and open to conversation can stay so clueless & head-in-the-sand when it comes to such foundational issues as systemic violence & coercion. Ah well, each one is right where they're at.

You're not alone in this thinking. I think some people hold on to some views so tightly that even if they're generally logical, they just can't muster it up to admit they were wrong. Saying or doing anything to get off topic and avoid the question.
Ya, that attachment, or even identifying with the ideas makes it so much harder to break away from it and be open-minded. I actually love having those conversations with folks myself, I have had a lot of luck with just the right words coming through :-)
