There must have been eggs on something but I just can't guess what. It's quite amazing that they are alive because I asked about getting them last year and in the shop they only had salt water ones. If they eat the algae and help keep it clean that's a bonus!

Yeah that's strange. Maybe they were in the soil? Not sure how long you had the tank but it sounds like it's been a while - so that's probably unlikely. Maybe a new fish ate a bunch of snail eggs and regurgitated them into your tank upon arrival.
We haven't even had new fish for months. The only thing that happens in the last few days was a cleaning and a new filter. Unless someone in the house is playing a cunning trick!
