Turning My Life Around (again, LOL) - Standing Up for Myself

in #life6 years ago

When all the while

I could have been facing this way.....

ViewIMG_20180315_1447366.jpg

Why? Oh, why

was my desk facing this way?

Around1IMG_20180315_1213495.jpg
I mean, have you got no soul @onceuponatime???

And why was I sitting

12, 14, sometimes 18 hours a day

when I knew damn well that so much sitting

was bad, bad, bad for my health?

silhouette-3120378_640.png

Yes, I had seen lots of the warnings,

but kept pushing them to the back of my mind.

Here's one example:

"We all know we need to be more active, but there is increasing evidence that we also need to spend less time sitting down.
To reduce our risk of ill health from inactivity, we are advised to exercise regularly – at least 150 minutes a week – and reduce sitting time.
Studies have linked excessive sitting with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death.
Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat.
Many adults in the UK spend more than seven hours a day sitting or lying, and this typically increases with age to 10 hours or more.
This includes watching TV, using a computer, reading, doing homework, travelling by car, bus or train but does not include sleeping."

https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/sitting-and-sedentary-behaviour-are-bad-for-your-health.aspx

and another:

Yes, sitting too long can kill you, even if you exercise

(CNN)Take a movement break every 30 minutes, say experts. No matter how much you exercise, sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death, a new study published Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine found.

There's a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause, researchers said, based on a study of nearly 8,000 adults. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death.
The positive news: People who sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death.

Finally I decided to do something

that I had been thinking about for a very long time.
I was going to get myself a stand-up desk and

turn my life around!!!

and I might just as well get a decent chair too
while I was at it :-)

Around2IMG_20180315_1215062.jpg

A new chair you say, @onceuponatime?

woman-3191629_640.png

Sorry for that.

Sometimes @twiceupontime disrupts my train of thought :-)

black-line-divider-clipart-divider-clip-art-9000_2500.jpg

In Athens, the first store of IKEA opened in April 22, 2004 in the commercial park of Athens International Airport while the second store opened in close proximity to the city center in March 2008.

Eureka!

IKEA SKARSTA Sit Stand Desk Review:

Hey, it looked a little better
on the cover of the catalogue.......

Around5IMG_20180315_1300461.jpg

Do these look like a desk to you?
Nope, me neither!

Fixit1IMG_20180314_1435296.jpg

Fixit2IMG_20180314_1447305.jpg

black-line-divider-clipart-divider-clip-art-9000_2500.jpg

Despite having read The Old Dog's warnings

about reading instructions to the end
before beginning to undertake something,
https://steemit.com/treetuesday/@kus-knee/the-old-dog-presents-the-mean-teacher-and-the-burled-wood-contest-winners
I at times find myself to be
completely impervious to good advice :-)

And so I had to start over a couple of times
before finally getting to this stage:

Around3IMG_20180315_1218058.jpg

It is a good thing

that I started by assembling the chair

ChairIMG_20180314_1510427.jpg
(which actually went together pretty easily)

before attempting the stand-up desk, which, as I said,
I had to start over again (ie. disassemble)
more than once before I finally got to this:

Around4IMG_20180315_1221037.jpg

black-line-divider-clipart-divider-clip-art-9000_2500.jpg

But one last frustration awaited me!

Rod1IMG_20180315_1620379.jpg

The crank that is needed to raise the desk
from sitting to standing position and back

was bent!!!!!

Rod2IMG_20180315_1620142.jpg
and won't fit into the mechanism.

And so I am considering rage-quitting Steemit!!!

not that my FRUSTRATION has anything to do with steemit mind you,
just that is what all the COOL Kids seem to be doing these days
(taking out their frustrations on steemit)

And who doesn't want to be cool?

ouzo and out

I am delighted that you have a new perspective. Clearly, an improvement. BIG improvement.

I also have new-found admiration for you NOT rage-quitting while assembling IKEA furniture. Because it requires a whole set of engineering skills that only come naturally to people who are genetically Swedish. I say this, having assembled an entire IKEA kitchen once. Subsequently I built a tree house for my cat with the leftover bits. Then again, maybe the instructions in Greek are better...

"When together, it affixes from the under while wrench (a-4) by the left hand, and has opening by circle of the right hand to the thumb at the last moment. When laying together, it holds accurately with the crease."

That was just to open the box.

May you enjoy your standing view, good sir!

You had "left over bits" from IKEA assemblages? NOW THAT IS INTERESTING!!!!

Very healthy and massive stuff espacially the drawing stuff i love that sort of drawings in which u have to connect parts after seeing the diagram

You are breaking my heart LOL

I quit Steemit three times this year and I feel great!

Yup, you sure taught us a lesson :-)

Taking breaks is healthy. I'm back but I need to slow down a bit. I burn myself out far too often. I'd probably fall asleep standing at one of those fancy desks. That's a good way to break a neck.

Well, I hope you "break a leg" (in your career), not a neck.

I'd like to break both of them before I ever consider retiring once and for all.

Your post has been featured in issue #2 of the MAKE IT HEALTHY PROJECT MAGAZINE. Many thanks for your contribution, and keep the great posts coming! :-)

Thank you. I am honored!

Great post! A good reminder for those of us who earn our livings from a chair. Even though I spend my mornings in the gym, I try to take a walk for at least a mile later in the day each day. It clears my head and helps me find new inspiration as well. On the crank, find something heavy, with a small enough opening to slip that into, and gently apply pressure on that long crank handle. If you're careful, it should straighten, there's enough leverage. I spent a lot of my life fixing things for a living, in addition to my writing and theatrical pursuits. I hope that helps, nothing as frustrating as assembling a piece and finding a problem. Good luck!

so much said about

overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and early death, slow metabolism, blood sugar, blood pressure, body fat.

i am a dentist , so i will say from a dentists point of view... the more u sit, the more coffee u will have and less tooth brushing u will do... that makes ur teeth get cavities and since u sit for around 18 hrs a day means u cant visit a dentist too... that means the cavity will destoy all ur teeth and soon u will be teethless... being teethless means u will start having wrinkles on face and start looking old... that is if ur of the age u will look 60... OMG... u r 60s means u just have very few time left ... i will say u should enjoy ur remaining time as much as u can... take care bro :p

ROFL

I am guilty of all of the above :-)

haha... Did i tellu about Implants... weelll the implant will make a 60 yr old look like a 30s.... So my bro dont worry u have ample time ... time for experiment ... dont worry .. :)
)

Send me your brochure :-)

Really like your style, @onceuponatime. Only IKEA stuff I've bought is from the charity shop so someone else has already done the heavy lifting.

I've just started a series on how to fix your posture, screen set-ups and treat your own neck & back pain.

Part 1: https://steemit.com/health/@marianneyardley/pain-from-computer-use-self-help-techniques-and-guidance-for-pain-relief-and-comfort

Part 2: https://steemit.com/health/@marianneyardley/are-your-computer-screen-angle-problems-causing-muscle-pain-guidance-for-pain-relief-and-comfort

Great to see you seein the light. And holy amazeballs, what a view! ;)

Oh, good. The charity shop didn't make you assemble them again!

@onceuponatime,
Due to busy life I decided to quite STEEMIT few times back, but at the end I am forced to leave my job :D
So, I think I need to buy this chair! I agree I am sitting more than 18 hrs a day! Sometimes it might be 20 hrs :/
I think it's time to change this daily routine! Thanks for highlighting this valuable thing!

Cheers~

"Stand up" for steemit!

Damn...never knew sitting could hurt this bad. I have been a big fan of sitting. I am not obese but I hate standing. Always got the cramp while standing so most times I prefer to sit or just lie down.

Well this piece talks extensively on the effects of excessive sitting...I think I suffer from excessive lying down. Hope it has no side effect

Excessive lying down is known to lead to premature dandruff. Please be careful!

Hahahahahahahahahhahahahha you are too incredibly funny! What!!!!

Giving the much time to rest can also harm the body. Butthese chairs can be comfortable

I have always found Butthese Chairs to be some of the most comfortable ever made :-)

Really need some like those for my Grandpa

such habits are very dangerous for the health of the body .. I also have experienced this habit of sitting in front of the computer or watching television for hours we do not realize that it is very high risk. let alone now spend hours in steemit.
thank you friend .. your post can remind us to maintain body health.. nice post @onceuponatime

Always happy to promote body health :-)

We all know we need to be more active, but there is increasing evidence that we also need to spend less time sitting down.

Usually it very easy to assemble any furniture from IKEA. I’ve done it numerous times as a contractor. A definitely recomend to follow the instructions, I’ve learned that the first time. In your case I would rather recommend Varidesk. Many of my friends have it and they are happy. BTW does this acrylic chair come with this half naked attractive...? And the view from your terrace is amazing. Ocean, mountains, what else can you wish for. Your post is informative, educational when it comes to “what to do not to die too early” and in some way funny and sexy as well.

"BTW does this acrylic chair come with this half naked attractive...?"
No. I'm afraid that is an option at added expense.

It's good that you have realized the dangers of sitting for too long. What you outlined there is actually true from the medical point of view. Exercise and live longer. I like the lady on the couch-so hot.
Blessings to you @onceuponatime

She likes you too!!!

we are not offended at all that you brought your frustration to share with us here. Afterall they say that a problem shared is a problem half-solved. Congratulations , your problem has been half-solved. And less I forget, I love your pictures. The camera quality is killing.

I just love you @onceuponatime

Thank God you're not offended!!! I was so worried!!!

Hahahahahaha another one. Hahaha

Great post!
I do a lot of sports and sitting on a desk the whole day was never something that I considered to do. You made a good decision to buy this stand up desk, hopefully you can fix what was bend and let us know how you feel using this fancy thing

by the way... The view out of your apartment is incredible!!!

I never considered that I would be sitting at a desk many many hours a day and night either. One never knows. what the future holds I guess

Yes, I understand you perfectly, when at last the long-awaited chair is assembled, you see the broken detail, it's very angry and frustrating. Well, I think it's the least that could ever be broken :) Have a nice day and thank you for the message, the chair is beautiful.

The chair is very flattered by your kind comment :-)

Haha
How can you go from sharing facts about health to funny blogging so casually..
I really enjoyed reading this..
About sitting for too long, apart from all the physical health related issues it really disrupts your mental balance .
I speak from experience that you'll be much more happy when you're active and not on your ass for too long

"How can you go from sharing facts about health to funny blogging so casually.."
What do you mean? I sweat blood and vomit tears to go from sharing facts about health to funny blogging :-)
Did you think that it doesn't tear my soul apart?

Lol
Yah, you're right..
The way steemit was working last night, this post really lifted my mood so thanks for that..

the amount of time i spend sitting,
i wonder am i still alive!

Are you sure that you are still alive? Have you checked lately?

I was actually cranky this night and you made me laugh, i forgot being cranky.

The chair won't help! I need a least a bicycle due to the 4km to the sea!

Well, mountains are nice to look at too :-)

Yes but have nothing but corn around my home in summer :-)
I used to have cats sitting between keyboard and screen! That's perfect atmosphere for work.
But you're right of course! A good chair is a big change in life and very important for health and comfort.

Where can I get the chair with a lady? She is very hot, you know...
Do they add a lady to every chair?? Wow!

They will add a lady if you can prove that you have read the "care and maintenance" section of the warranty and signed a non-disclosure agreement :-)

Nice thought.
I didn't like LOL type word -_-
This word looks so bad.

Do you think that you might have had a traumatic experience with an LOL as a small child? That might explain it :-)

@onceuponatime I just wanted to say it sounds different to me. I'm definitely a child my friend ha ha.

you have a very nice view !!! and I like the glass chair !!! :))) I want one!! :PPP
you must ask sorry...it is better, we make a party and we use it !!!

People who sit in glass chairs shouldn't throw bricks :-)

You are right...Now you changed my opinion..
Have a nice evening..😀😀😀

I know that my points may look a bit irrelevant but
a) your view is more than amazing :)
b) the symmetrical way everything is organised on your desk fascinated my sweet OCD and really made my day
c) congratulation for getting this chair done by yourself! IKEA is my worst enemy due to that "make it yourself" thing
d) I sit for many many hours per day so probably I won't be able to enjoy life for long :P

Ah, a multiple choice quiz. My favorite kind!

But what about the tried and true old "none of the above"? Or, "all of the above".

hahaha You're right I forgot e) all of the above :P

lol !

hmm.. rant galore
send some sun out here @onceuponatime

and stop suffering from comfort again :D

I have "suffering in comfort" down to an art form. Why would I stop?

okay then don't!
hahaha

send some sunshine from Greece with love to Holland ! :D

I think if that were you on the acrylic chair, sunshine would automatically shine down upon you :-)

true blue
unfortunately only clouds these days
no warmth
brrrr mode in here

lucky you!
share the luck then !

WOW What a view @onceuponatime !!!
The chair and the desk seem to fit right in place with it 😉!!

So what do you think after getting all your frustration out here on steemit about your shopping experience at IKEA; will you shop from them again LOL?

I think that I should have given up shopping for Lent :-)

freaking crypto-land demands unlimited hours in front of the screens, catching up the trends , dramas, etc.
I think a good chair will do & some exercise , i saw you got some weights on the floor but what our body need to wake up is cardio , in order to pump our metabolism , homonal profile, heart rate .
"Sitting is the new smoking"
Take a look at this article and feel free to freak out as i did , when i find it out,
https://www.diygenius.com/your-desk-job-is-killing-you-the-truth-about-sitting-down-infographic/

Maybe even the movement means early death lol i tried to motivate you to set more 😂 anyway life is too short so let's live it like we want 😉
I post a topic about the difference between love and admiration

Too much is not healthy either sitting or running. Balance in all things is always good for health .

To add to the effects of sitting for long in a state of inactivity, it can cause Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) which can dislodge and form an embolus which travels to the lungs to block the vessels, stopping blood supply and causing immediate death or going to the brain to occlude it still and cause stroke in patients with Atrial Septal Defect.

God bless you for this post @onceuponatime

I never bored while i am reading your post. You know how to present a difficult subject in simple & interesting way. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information, it will help a lots of people to maintain their health & stay fit. Thanks again for taking the time to post this information & stay fit.

Few months back i read an article about how a person can increase his life time by daily 30 minute exercise. Today you posted some think like that but your post is far better & interesting. Thank you so much for that.

fabulous analysis. that's pretty cool to know. love to read it

That much of time on computers, my God it will really kill anyone

If you want to change your life just start with small steps, by being a bit happier about your life and appreciating what you currently have. That state of mind will shift from where you are to a different place, but you have to be consistent; otherwise, you might give up.
That's chair photo and other photos are amazing.loving to your video.
may god bless you and your family.
take care your health @onceuponatime
stay blessed

I think the most fun part is to mount it. It makes people happy to achieve something. Everything I say about Manza is going to be missing. Because the harmony of the sea blue and the tones of the sky blue is great. I've been working for a long time. I can understand you. It is rarely even close to 20 hours. In your life, sir. Have a nice day...
And I wanted to say without forgetting. I look forward to sharing about your place. It looks really great.

this post is very amazing thank you friends have shared a post on us all.semoga your success is always friends, upvote and resteem yes

There is nothing better than sitting even if it is bad for our health. I spend hours in front of my laptop and know exactly how bad it is, but cant help it. This new technology corrupted us lol
Nice thoughts :)

True health is rarely ever getting sick. True health is waking up in the morning feeling full of energy and vitality. Going through our days with energy, a bounce in your step, and a smile on your face. Not feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, tired - no headaches or pain in your body. Your body is flexible. You never have to take a drug or have surgeries. Healthy people have no cancer, diabetes, or heart disease.thanks for sharing your experience with us keep sharing like this and keep your efforts like this u are always good performance photography.

Your picture story telling is very cool, @onceuponatime . That makes you a real cool guy :) . By the way, @twiceuponatime's intervention is good for stressed nerves, i suppose ? :D :D ...
But this is a very true insight - "too late in life we realise that we had been looking in the wrong direction" ... :D :D . But never too late for a new direction :) ... Greetings & profits to you, @onceuponatime :)

Hmmm looks like you applied a little common sense and it's paying off!

Hahahahahaha.

Yay! Its about time @onceuponatime.............

What a view...and all this time your were looking at the wall?i would actually put my bed too next to the desk to look at that view when i wake up.
Completely distressing. And i ll agree with @eliakon on that. IKEA stuff....usually end up broken while you have also spent 1-2 hours to put them all together.

To be honest I don't know what looks better, the new desk or the astonishing view?
As for the computer break, I knew it was 45 minutes, I guess I will have to stand up sooner from my desk from now on.

very beautiful! best collection

Once i was reading the Autobiography of my native celebrity whose age is 66 but he looks quite young even at this age, he shared the secret of his fitness. He said, daily exercise and laughter therapy are two things upon which i do not compromise". I do agree with him.
You conveyed the message by using the sense of humor and it is an urgent need of all the Tv, Multimedia and laptop users/lovers to take a small break after ever y hour and take a walking round around the gate. So,that no hazardous issues have to be faced due to this life style.
Thank you so much @onceuponatime
